Topical sections are as follows: (1) What Counts in Canadian Families (importance of (importance of family); (2) The Family--Variations on a Theme origins, family structure, seniors aged 60 and over, how lives are spent, religion); (3) Families Are Changing in Size and Structure (e.g., marriages and divorces, remarriage, causes of lone parenthood, age at first marriage, age at parenthood, average number of births per woman); (4) How Today's Families Are Making Ends Meet (e.g., family income, one- and two-wage earner families, poor families with children); (5) How Families Care for Each Other (e.g., where the elderly live, seniors needing help, child care need); and (6) Beyond Families: Who's Responsible? Among the statistical information presented are the following: 85 percent of all young people aged 15 to 24 intend to have children; 37 percent of Canadians over age 15 have at least one foreign-born parent; the population aged 65 and over is the fastest growing segment; and children living with a lone-parent mother are five times more likely to live in poverty than those living with two parents. A French version of the booklet accompanies the English one. Contains 30 references. (LB)

Book excerpt: This report is intended to increase awareness of the connections between two central spheres of social activity--work and family. Complementing the conventional analyses of the labor force in terms of economic sectors, educational requisites, age and income distribution, the report also presents an analysis of the family circumstances of the individuals who work each day. While the economy is conventionally assessed in terms of dollars, this report translates dollars into hours, revealing how much time is devoted to making a living, and how much is left over for living a life with one's family. Part one of the report presents a brief portrait of Canadian families and how they have changed over time. Part two examines families' financial resources, highlighting roles as consumer, accountant, and budget maker, and describing struggles to make ends meet. Part three looks at the work families do as child care providers, while part four takes a more general look at families in the labor force, emphasizing the significance of earnings as the primary source of family incomes; changes in the ways families make a living are addressed. Charts and graphs presenting statistical data are included. (JPB)

Book excerpt: "The Canadian census taken in 1901 has surprising things to say about the family as a social grouping and cultural construct at the turn of the twentieth century. Although the nuclear-family household was the most frequent type of household, family was not a singular form or structure at all; rather, it was a fluid micro-social community through which people lived and moved. There was no one "traditional" family, but rather many types of families and households, each with its own history ... to explore the demographic context of families in Canada using the 1901 census. Split into five sections, the collection covers such topics as family demography, urban families, the young and old, family and social history, and smaller groups as well. The remarkable plasticity of family and household that Household Counts reveals is of critical importance to our understanding of nation-building in Canada. This collection not only makes an important contribution to family history, but also to the widening intellectual exploration of historical censuses."--Pub. description.

Book excerpt: This paper examines some of the trends and statistics that impact families and marriage in Québec in such areas as the economy, taxation, government programs and policies (including the provincial daycare program), as well as fertility, marriage, divorce and cohabitation rates. Québec is breaking new ground in family and social policy, and challenging traditional notions of marriage and family life--sometimes for good and, more often, in ways that are problematic.
