Impressive monuments and romantic ruins mark the influences of long-gone empires. Intriguing archeological discoveries have been made in the northeast. Skilled artisans practise their crafts in the cool mountain regions of the north. The stunning scenery of the south forms a dramatic backdrop for its eventful history. Timeless vignettes of life on the klongs coexist with architectural masterpieces and busy market scenes in Bangkok. Artist Taveepong Limapornvanich truly captures the essence of Thailand in these watercolours and sketches. Writer William Warren succumbed to the allure of Thailand on his first visit and has lived there for over 40 years.

Book excerpt: Essential Desires: Contemporary Art in Thailand is the first major, fully illustrated survey of Thai art in thirty years. Brian Curtin shows how Thai artists negotiated their emergence on the global art stage while dealing with pan-Asian regionalism and nationalism at home. This book traces the influences on contemporary Thai artists, from the impact of consumerism in Bangkok in the 1990s to the waning legacies of tradition, and their relationship to the nation's often-volatile political stage. Curtin, in his exploration of Thailand's fascinating art scene, shows how Thai artists are generating new ideas about their country.

Book excerpt: A stunning collection of photographs of the LGBTQ community in Thailand, from one of the world’s most renowned photographers Steve McCurry is the artist behind some of the most iconic images in contemporary photography. His 1984 portrait of Sharbat Gula (“the Afghan girl”) on the cover of National Geographic remains widely recognized to this day. Now McCurry turns his attention to Thailand as part of a series of photobooks on LGBTQ communities around the world. Thailand has long had the reputation as one of the most gay-friendly destinations in Asia, particularly Bangkok with its nightlife and its relative openness and safety. While this may be true for tourists and expats, the idea of Thailand as a haven for LGBTQ people and for same-sex couples, heavily promoted by the tourist industry, does not necessarily extend to Thais themselves. While Thailand is home to the largest LGBTQ communities in Asia, the reality for them is less accepting. Discrimination and exclusion targeting LGBTQ people continues despite a nominally progressive stance on inclusion, and same-sex marriage remains illegal. Against this backdrop, McCurry’s lushly colored photographs take us into the vibrant LGBTQ community in Bangkok, and this beautifully packaged, affordably priced book gives us a series of close to one hundred moving and intimate portraits of people who are no longer welcome in the community in which they grew up, but who have forged a new life and a new meaning of family in the queer community. Belonging was designed by Emerson, Wajdowicz Studios (EWS).

Book excerpt: "A house in the center of Bangkok becomes the point of confluence where lives are shaped by upheaval, memory, and the lure of home. Witness to two centuries' flux in one of the world's most restless cities, a house plays host to longings and losses past, present, and future. A nineteenth-century missionary doctor pines for the comforts of New England even as he finds the vibrant foreign chaos of Siam increasingly difficult to resist. A post-war society woman marries, mothers, and holds court, little suspecting the course of her future. A jazz pianist is summoned in the 1970s to conjure music that will pacify resident spirits, even as he's haunted by ghosts of his former life. Not long after, a young woman gives swimming lessons in the luxury condos that have eclipsed the old house, trying to outpace the long shadow of her political past. And in the post-submergence Bangkok of the future, a band of savvy teenagers guides tourists and former residents past waterlogged, ruined landmarks, selling them tissues to wipe their tears for places they themselves do not remember. Time collapses as these stories collide and converge, linked by blood, memory, yearning, chance, and the forces voraciously making and remaking the amphibian, ever-morphing city itself"--Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bangkok Inside Out is unlike any other book on the Thai capital. It is an honest, humorous, contemporary snapshot of a 21st-Century Southeast Asian city bursting at the scams but plugging along nonetheless; of ordinary people in their urban landscape; of culture and pop culture. And it is hardly a typical 'portrait', because it tells the day-to-day truth about Bangkok--the proverbial Good, Bad, and Ugly. It provides insights into the chaotic reality of everyday life in the city rather than discussing floating markets or Patpong bars. Bangkok Inside Out quite literally turns Bangkok 'inside out', exposing the city piece by piece to the reader in a quirky, intelligent and accessible manner. It covers subjects like soi dogs, gem scams, karaoke bars, student cafes, motorcycle taxis, Seven-Eleven, urban elephants, sky train, luuk kreung (Eurasians), Chinatown, mobile phones, gambling, energy drinks, and lottery--the whole slew of topics that make Bangkok that it is. Like Bangkok itself, the book is packed with idiosyncrasies, inside scoops and quirky anecdotes. And it is illustrated with striking full color photos that visually present the Thai capital as never seen before. Bangkok Inside Out represents a new way of looking at contemporary Bangkok and Thailand. Existing books on Thailand tend to focus on traditional culture, history and landscapes, or on tired cliches and seedy accounts of the city's notorious nightlife. Bangkok Inside Out breaks new ground by addressing contemporary urban Thai culture at street level and offering entertaining insights into the colorful, complex reality of modern Bangkok life.

Book excerpt: A PASSIONATE, AFFECTIONATE RECORD OF ADVENTURES AND MISADVENTURES IN THE WORLD'S HOTTEST METROPOLIS Tourists come to Bangkok for many reasons—a sex change operation, a night with two prostitutes dressed as nuns, a stay in a luxury hotel. Lawrence Osborne comes for the cheap dentistry. Broke (but no longer in pain), he finds that he can live in Bangkok on a few dollars a day. And so the restless exile stays. Osborne's is a visceral experience of Bangkok, whether he's wandering the canals that fill the old city; dining at the No Hands Restaurant, where his waitress feeds him like a baby; or launching his own notably unsuccessful career as a gigolo. A guide without inhibitions, Osborne takes us to a feverish place where a strange blend of ancient Buddhist practice and new sexual mores has created a version of modernity only superficially indebted to the West. Bangkok Days is a love letter to the city that revived Osborne's faith in adventure and the world.

Book excerpt: The English translation of this best-selling graphic novel tells the story of Nok, an old blind man who sells lottery tickets in Bangkok, as he decides to leave the city and return to his native village. Through reflections on contemporary Bangkok and flashbacks to his past, Nok reconstructs a journey through the slums of migrant workers, the rice fields of Isaan, the tourist villages of Ko Pha Ngan, and the Red Shirt protests of 2010. Based on a decade of anthropological research, The King of Bangkok is a story of migration to the city, distant families in the countryside, economic development eroding the land, and violent political protest. Ultimately, it is a story about contemporary Thailand and how the waves of history lift, engulf, and crash against ordinary people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some years ago, when I first encountered Bangkok, I remember constantly staring at people's faces. Such a variety of faces, so many "looks," so many skintones, so many shapes and sizes. It was as if I was looking at a visual record of the last two thousand years of Mainland Southeast Asia's incredibly complex history of people, relationships and constant movement. It seemed every available DNA/Gene element in the world had, at one time or another, found its way to the great Thai trading centers of Ayutthaya and Bangkok where they all eventually blended together. The geographic space known today as Thailand has always been a crossing point, a center of interaction, a kind of international vortex where almost all the people, cultures, religion, beliefs and behaviours in the entire world have collided, mixed and mingled. Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian, Malaysian, Vietnamese, Khmer, Lao, Burmese, Indians, Arabs, Iranians, Mongolians and Europeans. Hoping to capture some of this visual splendor, to preserve it, to learn it, I started doing this series of pencil/graphite portraits. Nothing too ambitious or spectacular or wild. Just trying to record what was there in a kind of simple realistic style. Later on, I veered away from realism into distortion and crazy colors, which I felt better conveyed the actual ambiance and feeling of nightime Bangkok and all its rich variety of characters and extreme situations. These early portraits were my starting point.......
