Book Synopsis San Francisco, Portrait of a City: 1940-1960 by : Fred Lyon
Download or read book San Francisco, Portrait of a City: 1940-1960 written by Fred Lyon and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2014-09-16 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a landmark around every corner and a picture perfect view atop every hill, San Francisco might be the world's most picturesque city. And yet, the Golden City is so much more than postcard vistas. It's a town alive with history, culture, and a palpable sense of grandeur best captured by a man known as San Francisco's Brassai. Walking the city's foggy streets, the fourth-generation San Franciscan captures the local's view in dramatic black-and-white photos— from fog-drenched mornings in North Beach and cable cars on Market Street to moody night shots of Coit Tower and the twists and turns of Lombard Street. In San Francisco, Portrait of a City 1940–1960, Fred Lyon captures the iconic landscapes and one-of-a-kind personalities that transformed the city by the bay into a legend. Lyon's anecdotes and personal remembrances, including sly portraits of San Francisco characters such as writer Herb Caen, painters Richard Diebenkorn and Jean Varda, and madame and former mayor of Sausalito Sally Stanford add an artist's first-hand view to this portrait of a classic American city.

Book Synopsis The Birth of Western Painting (Routledge Revivals) by : Robert Byron
Download or read book The Birth of Western Painting (Routledge Revivals) written by Robert Byron and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1930, this book deals with Byzantine art, not as an isolated province, but as one intimately connected with the subsequent history of European painting. After a summary of the whole question in its relation to modern art, the second chapter opens with a novel analysis of the iconoclast controversy, and shows how it was only by this movement that Hellenistic naturalism was finally vanquished and the seed of interpretational art planted in Europe in its stead. The third chapter reveals how this seed was nourished by the Constantinopolitan Renascence, and how that event, combined with the increasing humanisation of religious emotion, culminated, not only in Duccio and Giotto, but in the equally important work of their contemporaries at Mistra and Mount Athos. A detailed account of these works is given and in the last part of the book, the mystery of El Greco is finally resolved. The book is based, not only on extensive research but on personal observation of nearly all the works mentioned, in Constantinople, Greece, Crete, Italy, and Spain. It is an important and exciting addition to the history of European Art and establishes, scientifically, theories which only existed in conjecture before its publication. The book includes 94 black and white plates.

Book Synopsis Esley Hunt: Early Portrait Photographer of North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee by : Christopher Hunt Robertson, M.Ed.
Download or read book Esley Hunt: Early Portrait Photographer of North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee written by Christopher Hunt Robertson, M.Ed. and published by Christopher Hunt Robertson. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biographical sketch introduces a significant Southern portrait photographer of the 19th century. In 1817, Esley Hunt was born in the rural mountainous area that would later become Johnson City, TN. (His childhood home, the Henson Hunt House, is listed on the Carter County Historical Register.) In the late 1840’s, Esley moved his family 220 miles to Chapel Hill, NC, where he would eventually become that town’s first studio photographer. He owned a house in Chapel Hill and 100 acres in Mebanesville (now Mebane). In 1859, Esley purchased a second portrait studio in Raleigh and acquired a 60 acre estate just west of the capitol city. In early advertisements, Esley stated his commitment to create art – notable in an era when many considered photography to be more of a technician’s itinerant occupation than an artist’s profession. By the late 1850’s, he and his artistic partner, painter Joshua P. Andrews of New York, were receiving numerous photography awards at the North Carolina State Fairs. After North Carolina joined the Confederacy in 1861, Raleigh became a gateway for soldiers and Esley continued to operate its primary portrait studio. Civil War portraits by Mr. Hunt and Mr. Andrews remain highly valued by collectors, and are invaluable to historians, genealogists, and descendants. The State Archives of North Carolina have referred to Esley Hunt as "one of the Civil War's most prolific and talented photographers in North Carolina," and some photography historians consider him to have been among the best in the South. (Originally published in 2018, this biographical sketch was the first to describe Esley Hunt's personal life and family.)
