Based on the properties of the fundamental solutions, theoretical results are established and numerical examples of stress field simulations are presented to assess the method’s performance. The first-ever 3D graphics calculated for these topics, which neither requiring meshing of the domain nor involving a time-stepping scheme, make this a pioneering volume.

High pore pressure is caused by under-compaction due to the rapid burial of low-permeability sediments, and as a result, porosity decreases less rapidly with depth than in normally compacted sediments where porosity decreases exponentially with depth. While under-compaction related pore pressure magnitudes have been determined empirically, in most numerical modeling approaches, the pore pressure is either applied as a static magnitude or coupled to a fluid flow simulator. This study simulates the pore pressure evolution during sediment loading and compaction using 3D porous-elastic-plastic finite element analysis. Continuous sedimentary loading is applied, and the resulting compaction process is coupled to the evolution of Poisson ratio and bulk modulus. The models test compacted sandstone and shale beds with varying ranges of physical properties including porosity, permeability, and elasticity for various sedimentation rates and initial physical properties distributions. Initial results show that overpressure occurs in rock layers with a permeability lower than 10−12 m2 when the sedimentation rate is equal to or exceeds 10 mm/year. It also shows that porosity tends to either decrease much slower or temporarily stops decreasing with the development of overpressure. Porous space is easier to be compacted in rocks featuring a lower bulk modulus under the same effective stress. The presented procedure enables to couple the simulation of the effective state of stress both due to the initial burial history of a sedimentary basin therefore provides a better assessment for rock failure analysis"--Abstract, page iii.

Eshelby's formula for the response of a single ellipsoidal elastic inclusion in an elastic whole space to a strain imposed at infinity is a very well-known and important result in elasticity. Having a rigorous generalization of Eshelby's results valid for poroelasticity means that the hard part of Eshelby' work (in computing the elliptic integrals needed to evaluate the fourth-rank tensors for inclusions shaped like spheres, oblate and prolate spheroids, needles and disks) can be carried over from elasticity to poroelasticity - and also thermoelasticity - with only trivial modifications. Effective medium theories for poroelastic composites such as rocks can then be formulated easily by analogy to well-established methods used for elastic composites. An identity analogous to Eshelby's classic result has been derived [Physical Review Letters 79:1142-1145 (1997)] for use in these more complex and more realistic problems in rock mechanics analysis. Descriptions of the application of this result as the starting point for new methods of estimation are presented.

Reliable correlations of rock velocity with other petrophysical parameters, such as porosity or density, are essential for calculating impedance models for synthetic seismic sections (BIDDLE et al. , 1992; CAMPBELL and STAFLEU, 1992) or identifying the origin of reflectivity on seismic lines (SELLAMI et al. , 1990; CHRISTENSEN and SZYMANSKI, 1991). Velocity is thus an important parameter for correlating lithological with geophysical data. Recent studies have increased our understanding of elastic rock properties in siliciclastic or shaly sediments. The causes for variations in velocity have been investigated for siliciclastic rocks (VERNIK and NUR, 1992), mixed carbonate siliciclastic sediments (CHRISTENSEN and SZYMANSKI, 1991), synthetic sand-clay mixtures (MARION et aI. , 1992) or claystones (JAPSEN, 1993). The concepts derived from these studies are however only partly applicable in pure carbonates. Carbon ates do not have large compositional variations that are, as is the case in the other sedimentary rocks, responsible for velocity contrasts. Pure carbonates are character ized by the lack of any clay or siliciclastic content, but are mostly produced and deposited on the top or on the slope of isolated or detached carbonate platforms, that have no hinterland as a source of terrigeneous material (WILSON, 1975; EBERLI, 1991).
