Book excerpt: The research program is an experimental study of static and dynamic poroelastic behavior of rocks. Measurements of Skempton's coefficient and undrained Poisson's ratio together with drained bulk modulus and shear modulus will provide a complete set of the four poroelastic moduli. Stress coupling to fluid flow in fractured rock can occur also through changes of fracture permeability due to fracture compressibility. Numerical models that include this effect will be compared with standard double porosity models of fluid extraction from oil reservoirs. Wave velocity and attenuation measurements will be made from seismic to ultrasonic frequencies to establish a phenomenological model of the effects of permeability, porosity and saturation for seismic exploration of oil and gas and for seismic characterization of an aquifer for environmental restoration and waste remediation.

This book was released on 2005-04-20 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary aim of this monograph is to present the current knowledge of brittle properties of rocks as determined in laboratory experiments. The principal aspects of brittle behavior are described with special attention to the fundamental physical aspects. Thus, the book provides a useful introduction to the basics of rock properties for engineering and earth science applications. Furthermore, it serves as a guide for graduate students and non specialists by presenting the relevant background material and where it can be found. For the new edition a further chapter has been added, and almost half of the chapters have been extensively revised and the others updated.
Book Synopsis Poroelasticity of Fractured Rock Masses. Final Report, August 1, 1991--October 31, 1997 by :
Download or read book Poroelasticity of Fractured Rock Masses. Final Report, August 1, 1991--October 31, 1997 written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laboratory measurements and theoretical investigations of poroelastic parameters were obtained to predict rock mass behavior under conditions from quasistatic (Darcy flow) to dynamic (seismic, borehole, and ultrasonic frequencies). Shear wave velocities and attenuation were measured in a well-characterized suite of Berea sandstones of different permeability. In the argon-saturated dry states, there is a correlation between the shear attenuation and the known sample permeability, with 1/Q[sub s] at 2 Hz ranging from 0.003 in the 100 mD sample to 0.01 in the 450 mD sample. At the same frequencies, 100% humid samples (3-5% water-saturated) showed much higher shear losses and higher shear attenuation was observed in the low permeability samples. Complete sets of four poroelastic moduli were made for Berea sandstone and Indiana limestone. A new formulation for a poro-elastic, double-porosity medium, showed the importance of a previously neglected cross-coupling term that represents the fluid released from storage in the matrix due to a change in pressure in the fracture phase. The theory was applied to the consolidation of a fractured porous medium.

Book Synopsis Rock Mechanics and Engineering Volume 3 by : Xia-Ting Feng
Download or read book Rock Mechanics and Engineering Volume 3 written by Xia-Ting Feng and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 1178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis, Modeling & Design is the third volume of the five-volume set Rock Mechanics and Engineering and contains twenty-eight chapters from key experts in the following fields: - Numerical Modeling Methods; - Back Analysis; - Risk Analysis; - Design and Stability Analysis: Overviews; - Design and Stability Analysis: Coupling Process Analysis; - Design and Stability Analysis: Blast Analysis and Design; - Rock Slope Stability Analysis and Design; - Analysis and Design of Tunnels, Caverns and Stopes. The five-volume set “Comprehensive Rock Engineering”, which was published in 1993, has had an important influence on the development of rock mechanics and rock engineering. Significant and extensive advances and achievements in these fields over the last 20 years now justify the publishing of a comparable, new compilation. Rock Mechanics and Engineering represents a highly prestigious, multi-volume work edited by Professor Xia-Ting Feng, with the editorial advice of Professor John A. Hudson. This new compilation offers an extremely wideranging and comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art in rock mechanics and rock engineering and is composed of peer-reviewed, dedicated contributions by all the key experts worldwide. Key features of this set are that it provides a systematic, global summary of new developments in rock mechanics and rock engineering practices as well as looking ahead to future developments in the fields. Contributors are worldrenowned experts in the fields of rock mechanics and rock engineering, though younger, talented researchers have also been included. The individual volumes cover an extremely wide array of topics grouped under five overarching themes: Principles (Vol. 1), Laboratory and Field Testing (Vol. 2), Analysis, Modelling and Design (Vol. 3), Excavation, Support and Monitoring (Vol. 4) and Surface and Underground Projects (Vol. 5). This multi-volume work sets a new standard for rock mechanics and engineering compendia and will be the go-to resource for all engineering professionals and academics involved in rock mechanics and engineering for years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Mechanics of Poroelastic Media the classical theory of poroelasticity developed by Biot is developed and extended to the study of problems in geomechanics, biomechanics, environmental mechanics and materials science. The contributions are grouped into sections covering constitutive modelling, analytical aspects, numerical modelling, and applications to problems. The applications of the classical theory of poroelasticity to a wider class of problems will be of particular interest. The text is a standard reference for researchers interested in developing mathematical models of poroelasticity in geoenvironmental mechanics, and in the application of advanced theories of poroelastic biomaterials to the mechanics of biomaterials.
