Book excerpt: We present the results of systematic micro-scale experimental investigations of multi-phase flow through fractured rock samples under a wide range of flow conditions. The results of the study have direct applications in fluid flow through fractures in conventional reservoirs and hydraulically-induced fractures in ultra-tight unconventional reservoirs. We generate high-resolution, three-dimensional maps of fluid distribution within a rough-walled fracture and its neighboring matrix using a miniature water-wet, fractured sandstone core sample. These maps along with steady-state pressure drop data are then used to shed light on the dominant flow mechanisms and preferential flow paths through the matrix and fracture domains as well as fluid transfer between them during numerous drainage and imbibition displacement cycles. Due to the topology of the fracture in the medium and the magnitude of the local capillary pressures that are established under varying flow conditions, different flow mechanisms govern the transport of the wetting phase through the fracture and matrix, i.e., fracture layer flow, fracture bulk flow, and advancement through matrix pores. The competition between these transport mechanisms is regulated by the medium as it identifies the flow path with minimum pressure drop from the inlet to the outlet of the hybrid matrix-fracture system. The resulting balance determines the magnitude of fluid transfer experienced by the neighboring matrix and ultimate recovery as a result. In the second category of the experiments, we probe two- and three-phase flow displacement processes in proppant-packed fractured shale samples under varying stress conditions. Three sets of experiments are performed to represent the fluid flow behavior through hydraulic fractures in shale oil, shale gas, and shale gas-condensate reservoirs, respectively. In each set of experiments, we study geomechanical deformation and consequent multi-phase flow factors that reduce effective hydrocarbon permeability that in turn results in early production loss in the above-mentioned unconventional reservoirs. We examine various types of proppants including regular sand, white sand, resin-coated sand, and ISP ceramic. Different packings of the proppants including multi-layer, uniform mono-layer, and non-uniform mono-layer, are also tested under severe closure stress conditions. For the first time, wettability alteration of proppant packs due to severe embedment and deposition of shale organic matter is reported at the pore scale. Significantly improved insight developed in this work can be used to design new proppants to effectively maintain hydraulic conductivity of the fractures for extended period of time.

This study investigates the wettability of rock fracture surfaces through contact angle measurements and surface roughness characterization. Droplet diameter and advancing contact angle were determined at 0.5s intervals for ~90s on flat polished disks of Burlington Limestone, Crossville Sandstone, Mancos Shale, Sierra White Granite, Vermilion Bay Granite (2 types), and Westerly Granite using a Krüss DSA 30 Drop Shape Analyzer. The droplet diameter and advancing contact angle data sets were nonlinearly regressed against time using two different two-parameter models. The resulting parameter estimates were used to compute the apparent equilibrium contact angle, [theta]e̳, for each disk following droplet diameter stabilization. Estimates of [theta]e̳ ranged from 37.2° for Mancos Shale to 75.6° for Burlington Limestone. Analysis of variance indicated statistically significant differences in [theta]e̳ between the rock types at the 95% confidence level. Height maps for fractured surfaces of these rocks were made using a Phenom Pro X SEM and analyzed for Wenzel roughness factor and fractal dimension using multi-image variography. The Mancos Shale and Crossville Sandstone were found to be fractal, both having a mean fractal dimension of 2.16. The Wenzel roughness factor was found to increase with increasing length scale. Mean Wenzel roughness factors for the 200 to 600 [mu]m fields were found to have significant differences between rock types. Using the Wenzel roughness factor and contact angle results in the Wenzel model, four of the rock types were found to have a rough surface contact angle of 0°, indicating complete wettability; the Burlington Limestone, Mancos Shale, and Westerly Granite had contact angles greater than zero but less than their contact angles for flat polished surfaces. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first time the Wenzel model has been used to quantify rough surface contact angles for rocks. The transient analysis employed in this study also permits a more meaningful estimate of the equilibrium contact angle for polished rock surfaces, rather than taking the initial value or averaging over time as is frequently done.

It alters the distribution of fluids at the pore scale which in turn leads to changes in the effective permeability, relative permeability, capillary pressure, etc. However, due to the lack of fundamental studies on the mechanisms correlating the pore-level fluid displacements with the pore space deformation, no compelling conclusions have been reached to account for the observed effects. To explore this correlation, a series of carefully characterized unsteady- and steady-state two-phase core-flooding experiments were performed on miniature sandpack samples under varying stress conditions while the pore space was being imaged using high-resolution x-ray microtomography techniques to acquire three-dimensional pore fluid configuration maps. In these studies, the deformation of the sandpack samples was characterized at both macro and micro scales. The impact of deformation on the frequency of various pore-scale fluid displacement mechanisms as well as fluid saturations and volumes during different flow processes (drainage and imbibition) were also investigated. Changes in the multiphase flow behavior, such as fluid velocity and pressure, were evaluated through direct simulations, which used a finite volume method to solve Navier-Stoke equations. Moreover, the variations in the in-situ capillary pressure caused by the pore space deformation were explored through interfacial curvature analysis. The relationship between relative permeabilities and effective stress was probed. Finally, in connection to the geological storage of carbon dioxide in deep saline aquifers, the impact of pore space deformation on residual trapping and dissolution of supercritical CO2 in brine saturated sandpacks was carefully examined through micro-scale flow experiments conducted under varying stress conditions. It was observed that in a water-wet porous medium, unsteady-state drainage can be both strengthened due to the higher fluid velocity and weakened by the increase in the threshold capillary pressure after the pore space contraction. By contrast, unsteady imbibition was affected solely by variations in the threshold capillary pressure and, consequently, was facilitated as the pore sizes reduced. During the steady-state core-flooding tests, additional drainage and imbibition displacements were triggered by the pore space expansion and contraction, respectively. Furthermore, it was found that wettability was one of the key properties that governed the impact of pore space deformation on the multiphase flow behavior in porous media. The wetting phase hydraulic conductivity was more sensitive to the pore space deformation than that of the non-wetting phase, because of their topologically different distributions in the pore space. Consequently, the relative permeability of the wetting phase decreased with the increase in the effective stress, while that of the non-wetting phase increased. However, this behavior changed as the wettability of the porous medium was altered to a weakly oil-wet state through a dynamic aging process. These studies provided novel insights into the fluid flow behavior in unconsolidated porous media under varying stress conditions, which are of ever-increasing importance to many subsurface applications, including hydrocarbon recovery, water management, CO2 sequestration, and hydrogen storage.

The void space of real rough-walled rock fractures is conceptualized as a two-dimensional heterogeneous porous medium, characterized by aperture as a function of position in the fracture plane. Portions of a fracture are occupied by wetting and nonwetting phase, respectively, according to local capillary pressure and accessibility criteria. Phase occupancy and permeability are derived by assuming a parallel-plate approximation for suitably small subregions in the fracture plane. For log-normal aperture distributions, a simple approximation to fracture capillary pressure is obtained in closed form; it is found to resemble the typical shape of Leverett's j-function. Wetting and non-wetting phase relative permeabilities are calculated by numerically simulating single phase flows separately in the wetted and non-wetted pore spaces. Illustrative examples indicate that relative permeabilities depend sensitively on the nature and range of spatial correlation between apertures. It is also observed that interference between fluid phases flowing in a fracture tends to be strong, with the sum of wetting and nonwetting phase relative permeabilities being considerably less than 1 at intermediate saturations.
