Book Synopsis Time and a Place by : Edward MacDonald

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its long and well-documented history, Prince Edward Island makes a compelling case study for thousands of years of human interaction with a specific ecosystem. The pastoral landscapes, red sandstone cliffs, and small fishing villages of Canada’s “garden province” are appealing because they appear timeless, but they are as culturally constructed as they are shaped by the ebb and flow of the tides. Bringing together experts from a multitude of disciplines, the essays in Time and a Place explore the island’s marine and terrestrial environment from its prehistory to its recent past. Beginning with PEI’s history as a blank slate – a land scraped by ice and then surrounded by rising seas – this mosaic of essays documents the arrival of flora, fauna, and humans, and the different ways these inhabitants have lived in this place over time. The collection offers policy insights for the province while also informing broader questions about the value of islands and other geographically bounded spaces for the study of environmental history and the crafting of global sustainability. Putting PEI at the forefront of Canadian environmental history, Time and a Place is a remarkable accomplishment that will be eagerly received and read by historians, geographers, scholars of Canadian and island studies, and environmentalists.

Book Synopsis Three Centuries and the Island by : Andrew Hill Clark
Download or read book Three Centuries and the Island written by Andrew Hill Clark and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1959-12-15 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is one of the first in the field of historical geography to be published in Canada. Written after exhaustive research, it uses a particular approach to the study of historical agricultural geography which concentrates on the use of basic distributional evidence for the description and interpretation of the changing character of any region through any period of time. By the analysis of over 1200 maps, some of which form part of the text of the book, Professor Clark studies agriculture as the dominant economic activity of Prince Edward Island and traces with remarkable clarity through the changing patterns of land culture throughout the province. The book begins with a description of the natural geography of the Island which, despite its small size, shows surprising variety. It goes on to prove the necessity for careful consideration of the background of habit and prejudice of groups of different origin when studying the changing geographies of land use. The settlement of the Island is traced from the time it was used as a summer campground by the Micmac Indians. Details of the arrival of the first Acadians, the transfer to British rule, and the subsequent influx of Scottish, Irish, Loyalist, and English stock are given together with evidence of the effect their coming had on the agriculture of the region. One hundred and fifty-five maps and sixteen tables to illustrate the distribution of population by area and origin, changes in kind and distribution of crops, census of livestock, etc., from the early eighteenth century to the present day, and from the days when the potato was unknown as a crop through the fur-farming era. The author presents this study as part of his life-work, a programme of research on the settlement overseas in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries of the people from the British Isles. He is descended from Prince Edward Island settlers and writes of the province from a background of personal knowledge of, and affection for, the land of his forbears.

Book Synopsis Managed Annihilation by : Dean Bavington
Download or read book Managed Annihilation written by Dean Bavington and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Newfoundland and Labrador cod fishery was once the most successful commercial fishery in the world. When it collapsed in 1992, many pointed to failures in management, such as uncontrolled harvesting, as likely culprits. Managed Annihilation makes the case that the idea of natural resource management itself was the problem. The collapse occurred when the fisheries were state-managed and still, two decades later, there is no recovery in sight. Although the collapse raised doubts among policy-makers about their ability to understand and control nature, their ultimate goal of control through management has not wavered and has been transferred from wild fish to fishermen and farmed cod.
Book Synopsis Mammals of Prince Edward Island and Adjacent Marine Waters by : Rosemary Curley
Download or read book Mammals of Prince Edward Island and Adjacent Marine Waters written by Rosemary Curley and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This long overdue book provides a comprehensive guide to the Island's terrestrial and marine mammals. Rooted in historical accounts and local research, this book illuminates the lives of PEI mammals large and small. From the Little Brown Bat to the Sowerby's Beaked Whale, this book highlights each species in illustrated detail and outlines the continued need for conservation efforts. No other Canadian province has lost such a large proportion of its mammal species due to the conversion from a forested to a predominantly agricultural landscape. In the 20th century, many marine mammals were so rare due to prior centuries of human exploitation that any sightings or strandings on PEI were recorded. The expansion of forest cover and the continued efforts of local wildlife and conservation agencies, along with the use of new and refined study techniques on land and in the sea, continue to improve our ability to understand and protect the native mammals of PEI.
