Book excerpt: "The image of the human skull is a universal icon, common throughout human civilization since time immemorial. "Skullture" takes a comprehensive approach to portraying how the image manifests in contemporary art, design and popular culture. This analysis includes visual and conceptual considerations of the skull throughout history, connecting the dots between Aztec religious iconography, Punk Rock and eighteenth century funerary practices without ever losing sight of the fact that, while fashion my change, the skull remains the same. "Skullture" presents diverse aesthetic uses of the skull as well as its various cultural resonances throughout all disciplines of art and design."--Back cover.

Book Synopsis Death in Documentaries by : Benjamin Bennett-Carpenter
Download or read book Death in Documentaries written by Benjamin Bennett-Carpenter and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memento mori is a broad and understudied cultural phenomenon and experience. The term “memento mori” is a Latin injunction that means “remember mortality,” or more directly, “remember that you must die.” In art and cultural history, memento mori appears widely, especially in medieval folk culture and in the well-known Dutch still life vanitas paintings of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Yet memento mori extends well beyond these points in art and cultural history. In Death in Documentaries: The Memento Mori Experience, Benjamin Bennett-Carpenter suggests that documentaries are an especially apt form of contemporary memento mori. Bennett-Carpenter shows that documentaries may offer composed transformative experiences in which a viewer may renew one’s consciousness of mortality – and thus renew one’s life.

Somehow the word sounded vaguely familiar--I sought laboriously to remember. Yes--I had heard it, lying half-waking in the bunks or on the floor--whispered sibilantly by Yun Shatu or by Hassim or by Yussef Ali, the Moor, muttered in their low-voiced conversations and mingled always with words I could not understand. Was not Yun Shatu, then, master of the Temple of Dreams? I had thought and the other addicts thought that the withered Chinaman held undisputed sway over this drab kingdom and that Hassim and Yussef Ali were his servants. And the four China boys who roasted opium with Yun Shatu and Yar Khan the Afghan and Santiago the Haitian and Ganra Singh, the renegade Sikh--all in the pay of Yun Shatu, we supposed--bound to the opium lord by bonds of gold or fear. For Yun Shatu was a power in London's Chinatown and I had heard that his tentacles reached across the seas into high places of mighty and mysterious tongs. Was that Yu
