Book Synopsis Fraseología, Diatopía y Traducción / Phraseology, Diatopic Variation and Translation by : Pedro Mogorrón Huerta
Download or read book Fraseología, Diatopía y Traducción / Phraseology, Diatopic Variation and Translation written by Pedro Mogorrón Huerta and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all languages, humans frequently use linguistic combinations called phraseological units (PUs) in communicative acts. These PUs are characterized by their institutionalized fixation and, in many cases, by their opacity. Traditionally, the work on phraseology has placed the emphasis on the total fixing of components and structures of verbal expressions. Variation in PUs is currently an uncontested fact and has been extensively studied and analyzed. In addition, in the case of languages like Spanish, English, French, spoken in many countries, new creations or diatopic variants arise. While these diatopic expressions have been collected or analyzed in their territory of influence, no comprehensive collection showing all the expressions and contrastive analysis to observe the similarities and differences between these diatopic creations with all their idiosyncratic and cultural references have been made so far. The content of this volume deals with numerous linguistic, lexicographic and translational problems in the context of language variation in general, as well as specifically related to diatopic variation. The aim is to make progress in these challenging and highly interesting areas which still pose many comprehension and translation problems.

An outline of the model of valency theory used in this dictionary is provided in the introduction.
Book Synopsis Computational Phraseology by : Gloria Corpas Pastor
Download or read book Computational Phraseology written by Gloria Corpas Pastor and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether you wish to deliver on a promise, take a walk down memory lane or even on the wild side, phraseological units (also often referred to as phrasemes or multiword expressions) are present in most communicative situations and in all world’s languages. Phraseology, the study of phraseological units, has therefore become a rare unifying theme across linguistic theories. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have been concerned with the computational treatment of multiword expressions: these pertain among others to their automatic identification, extraction or translation, and to the role they play in various Natural Language Processing applications. Computational Phraseology is a comparatively new field where better understanding and more advances are urgently needed. This book aims to address this pressing need, by bringing together contributions focusing on different perspectives of this promising interdisciplinary field.

Book excerpt: Like every word she wrote, Wollstonecraft's letters are full of personal revelations and wise thoughts. They are doubly interesting because can trace the intimate thought which lay beneath the public statement. One could pick out of this book enough epigrams to make a motto calendar. "Men with common minds seldom break through general rules. Prudence is ever the resort of weakness." "There is always a mixture of sentiment and imagination in voluptuousness " might have been written as a partial apology for the wayward Imlay. She relates her interview with the Prime Minister of Denmark, and sums him up as being "more anxious not to do wrong than to do good."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, Ruhr-University of Bochum (Englisches Seminar), course: Romanticism in the Light of Cultural Studies, language: English, abstract: The time of Romanticism is historically regarded as a masculine phenomenon. As Anne K. Mellor pointed out, Romanticism as a literary movement was constructed and defined by a masculine discourse and ideology, a "masculine Romanticism". This masculine Romanticism is the traditional understanding of the literary movement - based on the writings and thoughts of the five canonical writers Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, and Keats. Mellor suggests that "feminine Romanticism" occurs to recover the erased and neglected voices of women writers within this movement. To understand these differences of masculine and feminine Romanticism, one has to realize that both terms serve as an ideological gender construction, not in terms of the author ́s sex. To analyse female romantic literature also means to consider the division of ́private ́ and ́public ́ sphere occuring in the eighteenth century, a phenomenon that should be discussed in the following chapter. This paper aims to show how women writers could made a career in the male-dominated time of Romanticism. In order to show the problems they experienced within a patriarchal society, I will explore the subordination of women by a construction of femininity which did not grant them the status of rational thinking subjects. For this purpose I have chosen the example of Mary Wollstonecraft, the revolutionary founder of feminism. Wollstonecraft was not only a writer herself, but she was also the wife of the well-known political philosopher, William Godwin, and she gave birth to Mary Godwin Shelley, the famous author of Frankenstein. As a member of the literary circle around Joseph Johnson, she was surrounded by famous contemporary writers and was involved in literary relationships withi

Book Synopsis Bilinguality and Bilingualism by : Josiane F. Hamers
Download or read book Bilinguality and Bilingualism written by Josiane F. Hamers and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-02-17 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated and revised edition of Hamers and Blanc's successful textbook presents state-of-the-art knowledge about languages in contact from individual bilingualism (or bilinguality) to societal bilingualism. It is both multi- and interdisciplinary in approach, and analyses bilingualism at individual, interpersonal, and societal levels. Linguistic, cognitive and sociocultural aspects of bilingual development are explored, as are problems such as bilingual memory and polyglot aphasia. Hamers and Blanc analyse the relationship between culture, identity, and language behaviour in multicultural settings, as well as the communication strategies in interpersonal and intergroup relations. They also propose theoretical models of language processing and development, which are then applied to bilingual behaviour. Other topics reviewed include language shift, pidgins and creoles, language planning and bilingual education. This book will be invaluable to students, teachers and scholars interested in languages in contact in a range of disciplines including psycholinguistics, linguistics, the social sciences, education and language planning.

Book Synopsis Defining Language by : Geoff Barnbrook
Download or read book Defining Language written by Geoff Barnbrook and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2002-10-24 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Definition is a basic activity of language, of particular importance to linguists because of its use of language to describe itself. Beyond this inherent significance as a crucial element of language study, definitions also provide a rich potential source of the information needed for Natural Language Processing systems. This book describes an investigation of the subset of general language used in definition sentences and the development of a taxonomy of definition types, a grammar of definition sentences and parsing software which can extract their functional components. The work is based on definition sentences used in one of the dictionaries from the Cobuild range, and the book includes a brief history of the development of monolingual English dictionaries, an assessment of the concepts of sublanguages and local grammars and a full exploration of the results of the analysis and of the present and future applications of the taxonomy, grammar and parser.
