Book excerpt: Since the early cloud chamber research of C.T.R. Wilson 100 years ago, scientific evidence has existed that water vapor contains huge populations of electrically neutral clusters of water molecules. Hydrogen bonding was unknown to Wilson; therefore, he could not assign a physical basis to these clusters. Thirty years ago, the author began collecting observations and performing new experiments to elucidate the nature of these clusters and their equilibria with their dissociative ions. The experimental results from diverse investigations of atmospheric turbulence, IR absorption and emission, mass spectrometry, vapor electrical conductivity, nucleation events in cooling, saturated water vapor, and moist air are included. The conclusions based on these experimental results are absolutely fundamental to the physical sciences and to our understanding of water itself.

Book excerpt: "Although nucleation phenomena are among the most widespread of all naturally occurring phenomena, even the simplest of nucleation processes, homogeneous nucleation, is poorly understood, particularly the homogeneous nucleation of liquid droplets from water vapor. Homogeneous nucleation involves only molecules of a single substance and does not include the complicating effects due to a substrate or piece of foreign matter. The semiphenomenological liquid drop theories developed nearly three decades ago differ in relatively minor details, with the crucial element of the theory being the derivation of the free energy of formation of the clusters. The clusters are viewed as well-defined incompressible spherical droplets which possess bulk properties. Such considerations do not take into account the details of the transition region at the interface between the two phases. Recent quantum statistical corrections to the theory are merely attempts to formulate a hybrid theory containing both bulk thermodynamic and quantum statistical considerations ... In this dissertation, a statistical mechanical technique is developed from which the equilibrium concentrations of clusters of various sizes may be calculated if the bonding structure of the clusters can be predicted and the energy associated with the various structures are known"--Abstract, leaves ii-iii.

Book excerpt: The kinetic theory of cluster formation in a condensing gas proposed by Buckle (1) attempts to calculate the course of homogeneous condensation from molecular rather than thermodynamic precepts. Here it is applied to the rapid nonequilibrium expansion of atmospheric water vapor in air. A method is established for demonstrating the validity of this theory, originally proposed for a mono-molecular gas, in the case of a complicated species such as water vapor. Cluster conditions in the temperature range 210-295 K and the vapor pressure are calculated throughout the collapse of a supersaturated metastable vapor. An effective molecular pair interaction energy and nearest neighbor coordination number is found based on the classical zero-point enthalpy of sublimation and by iteration to satisfy initial equilibrium limiting constraints at 273 K. The internal energy redistribution frequency results from close matching of the experimental pressure distribution. A method of determining the cluster size at which macroscopic properties become relevant is described; the size is found to be a cluster of about 122 molecules at 273 K based on a hard sphere model collision cross section. For the water vapor dimer an equilibrium constant of 4 x 10 to the -21st power/cc is found at 273 K compared to 3.1 x 10 to the -21st power/cc obtained from Keyes data. Two models for water vapor clusters result (from satisfying all constraints imposed on the theory) which are given in terms of number of nearest neighbors, pair interaction energy per molecule (2.9kcal/mol at 273 K) and possible structure on a cluster by cluster basis for a classical hard sphere model and for a model approximating a Pauling type clathrate.

This book serves as a general multidisciplinary guide and introduction for a more effective use of the large amount of now available data from the Earth's atmosphere. It also shows the problems of the use of large amounts of time series data - for basic science as well as for environmental monitoring - and the related information systems. The book is aimed for scientists and students interested in the Earth's atmosphere which is vital for the understanding of environmental changes in the global system Earth.
