From 90° peel tests of thin PMA films adsorbed on glass slides, it was found that the peel velocities varied linearly with applied force and force-velocity curves were dependent on film thickness. It was also observed that the molecular mass and silica content in the films affected the adhesion in thin PMA films"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To date, no comprehensive study of the adhesion of plasma-polymerized films on plastics has been made. In the present work, 1400-Å films produced by the radio frequency discharge plasma polymerization of styrene and acrylonitrile were deposited on polyethylene, polystyrene, polypropylene, poly(ethyleneterephthalate) (Mylar), polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon), polycarbonate (Lexan), polyimide (Kapton), poly(methyl methacrylate) (Lucite), polyamide (Nylon 6), poly(oxymethylene) (Delrin), and poly(vinyl fluoride) (Tedlar) substrates. Adherence of these films was then measured by applying a 1⁄2 by 2 in. (1.27 by 5 cm) piece of Scotch No. 810 tape to the film and then removing the tape in a 90-deg peel. This provides a lower limit of 190 g/in. for the adhesion of the polymer film to the substrate. It was found that both plasma polystyrene and plasma polyacrylonitrile were removed by this procedure from poly(oxymethylene), polypropylene, poly(methyl methacrylate), and polycarbonate. Both films remained adhered to the other seven plastics during this test. These results can be explained on the basis of molecular structure and can be correlated with literature data on bond strength results for activated gas-treated substrates. It was also concluded, considering the divergent properties of the two plasma polymers, that adhesion to any substrate is not dependent on the structure of the plasma polymer. Soaking films of plasma-deposited polyacrylonitrile on Mylar in solvents of varying polarity for long periods of time did not reduce the adhesion of the film to the substrate. It would seem that the film-substrate bond is either a physical one of a very high order or more likely a true chemical bond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very thin film materials have emerged as a highly interesting and useful quasi 2D-state functionality. They have given rise to numerous applications ranging from protective and smart coatings to electronics, sensors and display technology as well as serving biological, analytical and medical purposes. The tailoring of polymer film properties and functions has become a major research field. As opposed to the traditional treatise on polymer and resin-based coatings, this one-stop reference is the first to give readers a comprehensive view of the latest macromolecular and supramolecular film-based nanotechnology. Bringing together all the important facets and state-of-the-art research, the two well-structured volumes cover film assembly and depostion, functionality and patterning, and analysis and characterization. The result is an in-depth understanding of the phenomena, ordering, scale effects, fabrication, and analysis of polymer ultrathin films. This book will be a valuable addition for Materials Scientists, Polymer Chemists, Surface Scientists, Bioengineers, Coatings Specialists, Chemical Engineers, and Scientists working in this important research field and industry.

Book excerpt: Polymer thin films are ubiquitous in a variety of everyday applications from cookware to packaging. Light can be used to both probe and manipulate the mobility of polymers in thin films. The first project involves the self-diffusion of poly(isobutyl methacrylate) (PiBMA) in thin films using fluorescence recovery after patterned photobleaching (FRAPP). PiBMA is an ideal polymer for this study because it exhibits a film thickness-independent glass transition temperature (Tg) on silicon oxide substrates in film thicknesses down to 14 nm. Since the diffusion coefficient of a polymer depends on the proximity of the experimental temperature to its Tg, nanoconfined diffusion can be measured without superimposed influence from Tg nanoconfinement effects. In this study, self-diffusion of PiBMA parallel to the confining interfaces was found to be film thickness independent to ~30 nm. The reason for the film thickness independence of the Tg of PiBMA is the balance between enhanced mobility at the free interface and hydrogen bonding with the substrate. However, when hydroxyls on the substrate are masked, the Tg of PiBMA decreases with decreasing film thickness. In this case, the diffusion coefficient increases with decreasing film thickness in a way consistent with additional distance from Tg. The second project involves a new approach for creating topographic patterns in thin films via the Marangoni effect, which describes how small variations in surface energy can promote dramatic movement of fluids. Topographic patterns created using this method are potentially useful in a variety of applications, such as the creation of soft lithography stamps. Using a photomask, surface energy gradients can be patterned into solid polymer films. Upon heating the polymer film to a liquid state the Marangoni effect causes the polymer to flow creating three-dimensional topography. This technique was first demonstrated in polystyrene, which undergoes a partial dehydrogenation of the polymer backbone upon photoexposure. However, as exposed and unexposed regions inter-diffuse the topographic features decay. A solution to this problem is to use two orthogonally acting photosensitizers in the polymer film, one for topography creation, and the other for cross-linking which stabilizes the topography at high temperature.
