Book excerpt: Research was done in three general areas: material properties of polymer-impregnated concrete, repair of deteriorated and delaminated bridge decks, and polymer impregnation of new deck surfaces. Structural and durability properties of impregnated normal and structural lightweight concretes were measured. Effects of temperature and cyclic loading were investigated and bond pull-out strength of reinforcement was measured. Process variables studied include monomer type, method of polymerization, aggregate type, and air content of the concrete. Compared with the controls, the properties of MMA-impregnated samples were improved by factors ranging from 2.6 to 4.5. Use of polymer-impregnated concrete to prevent chloride penetration into bridge decks was demonstrated and prototype deck panels have been evaluated. Impregnation offers a potential solution to the bridge deck deterioration problem. Impregnated curbstones are also being tested. Techniques for repairing highly deteriorated and delaminated bridge decks by monomer impregnation were demonstrated in field tests in which a 6-in.-thick section of deck was impregnated. Cores taken from the reconstituted deck had compressive strengths and water absorptions of 5000 psi and 1.6 percent, respectively. Plans to repair an entire deck are being formulated by NYSDOT. Low-viscosity monomer systems that can be used to repair delaminated concrete have been developed. (auth).

Book excerpt: The rapid deterioration of concrete bridge decks as a result of the increased use of deicing salts is one of the most severe problems facing the highway industry today. One possible solution to the problem is the use of concrete polymer materials. The materials of prime interest are polymer-impregnated concrete and polymer concrete, both of which have excellent durability and strength properties. Three potential applications (repair of deteriorated bridge decks, polymer impregnation of new bridge deck surfaces, and full impregnation of precast deck panels) have been studied in laboratory and field tests, and the results have been encouraging. These results and economic considerations are described in the paper. The work in each of the areas is currently being implemented by the Federal Highway Administration.

Book excerpt: With the continued use of deicing salts coupled with the small amount of cover constructed over the top mat of steel in many bridge decks badly deteriorated concrete bridge decks are becoming an increasing problem. To prevent this in the future on structures being constructed now, some means of positively sealing the surface of the concrete deck against the intrusion of moisture and deicing salts is needed. Linseed oil treatments and asphalt seal coats are not 100% effective and improved methods are needed. Researchers under cooperative research study 3-9-71-114, Concrete-Polymer Materials for Highway Application, developed in the laboratory and field tested a method of "polymer impregnating" concrete bridge decks. This report describes in detail the method of polymer impregnating a new 64'8"x751' bridge deck at Big Spring, Texas. A drying method using gas fired infrared radiant heaters for drying the deck and polymerizing the monomer system was developed by the contractor. This method did not require an insulated enclosure, provided uniform heat on the deck and was considered to be an efficient economical construction method. The impregnation depths achieved were generally the 1/2"--5/8" range.

A significant number of published papers, reports, etc., were examined to determine the effectiveness of full depth precast panels for bridge deck replacement. A detailed description of the experimental methodology was developed which includes design and fabrication of the panels and assembly of the bridge. The design and construction process was carried out in cooperation with the project Technical Review Panel. The major components of the bridge deck system were investigated. This includes the transverse joints and the different materials within the joint as well as composite action. The materials investigated within the joint were polymer concrete, non-shrink grout, and set-45 for the transverse joint. The transverse joints were subjected to direct shear tests, direct tension tests, and flexure tests. These tests exhibited the excellent behavior of the system in terms of strength and failure modes. Shear key tests were also conducted. The shear connection study focused on investigating the composite behavior of the system based on varying the number of shear studs within a respective pocket as well as varying the number of pockets within a respective panel. The results indicated that this shear connection is extremely efficient in rendering the system under full composite action. Finite element analysis was conducted to determine the behavior of the shear connection prior to initiation of the actual full scale tests. In addition, finite element analysis was also performed with respect to the transverse joint tests in an effort to determine the behavior of the joints prior to actual testing. The most significant phase of the project was testing a full-scale model. The bridge was assembled in accordance with the procedures developed as part of the study on full-depth precast panels and the results obtained through this research. The system proved its effectiveness in withstanding the applied loading that exceeded eight times the truck loading in addition to the maximum negative and positive moment application. Only hairline cracking was observed in the deck at the maximum applied load. Of most significance was the fact that full composite action was achieved between the precast panels and the steel supporting system, and the exceptional performance of the transverse joint between adjacent panels.

Book excerpt: Three 180', simple span, composite plate girder structures were designed to approximate the material requirements and first cost associated with a polymer-impregnated concrete as compared to those for a conventional concrete bridge deck. The structures were designed by the working stress method, and although the AASHTO code was applied where applicable, some assumptions were made in the design of the polymer-impregnated deck. The results indicate that by using polymer-impregnated concrete rather than conventional concrete in a bridge deck, material requirements may be altered as follows, depending upon the assumptions and specifications applied in the design. 1. Deck concrete : 0 to 41% less, 2. Deck reinforcing steel : 0 to 115% more, 3. Structural steel : 0 to 16% less, 4. Substructure : 0 to 17% less. Assuming that polymer-impregnated concrete costs about twice as much as conventional concrete, the structures with a polymer deck cost from 0.5% less to 10.5% more than the structure with a conventional deck. Based on these findings it appears that the material savings that can be achieved by using polymer-impregnated concrete in a bridge deck may tend to offset the high unit cost of the concrete, but not enough to justify its use on a first cost basis. However, performance specifications for concrete polymer materials must be developed before an accurate determination of material savings can be made.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a study to evaluate the performance over a 10-year period of slabs that were impregnated to a depth of about 1 in with a monomer that was subsequently polymerized (shallow polymer impregnation). The slabs were used to widen a bridge. The report contains data obtained from evaluations done after 3, 5, 7, and I0 years in service. The study indicates that, based on rapid permeability tests done on cores removed from the slabs, rate of corrosion measurements made on the top matof reinforcement in the slabs, and chloride ion content determinations done on samples removed from the slabs, shallow polymer impregnation can provide greater long-term protection against the infiltration of chloride ions and the consequent corrosion of reinforcement than conventional bridge deck concrete that is not impregnated.
