Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was not until recent years that the study of polyamines, their mechanisms of synthesis, and the roles they play in metabolism have flourished, becoming a fertile field of intense research. Polyamines in Fungi: Their Distribution, Metabolism, and Role in Cell Differentiation and Morphogenesis provides a complete overview of its topic. It is the first and only book to describe and analyze the roles of polyamines in fungi and compare them with the roles of polyamines in higher eukaryotes. The book contains data on the distribution of polyamines, their physiological functions, mechanism of synthesis and regulation, phylogenetic analyses of the enzymes involved in their synthesis, their use as possible targets for the control of fungal diseases, and possible biotechnological and medical applications. Based on work generated by the authors in their laboratory over many years, the book contains all the basic information to understand the similarities and differences of polyamine metabolism in eukaryotes. Additionally, it provides an up-to-date account of the contribution and potential use of fungi as models for the basic study of polyamines in comparison with other organisms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polyamines are small aliphatic polycations which have been involved in key stress and developmental processes in plants. In the recent years, compelling genetic and molecular evidences point to polyamines as essential metabolites required for resistance to drought, freezing, salinity, oxidative stress among other type of abiotic and biotic stresses. In addition to their role as stress-protective compounds, polyamines participate in key developmental processes mediated by specific signaling pathways or in cross-regulation with other plant hormones. Our Research Topic aims to integrate the multiple stress and developmental regulatory functions of polyamines in plants under a genetic, molecular and evolutionary perspective with special focus on signaling networks, mechanisms of action and metabolism regulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the scientific contributions presented at an International Symposium held in Sorrento, Italy, in June 1988 under the auspices of the University of Naples, the Italian Society of Biochemistry, and the National Research Council. The modern history of polyamines dates back to 1958 when the Tabors and Rosenthal first described the outlines of their biological synthesis. From then on, and particularly in the last ten years, a veri table explosion of Literature, characterized by thousands of papers, has witnessed the interest of the scientific community toward these molecules. Perhaps the old statement that "polyamines are molecules in search of a function" is no longer true today. A large number of effects exerted by these simple molecules are well known, and in many cases the mechanisms underlying these effects have been elucidated. The first section of the volume is entirely devoted to the enzymology and molecular biology of ornithine decarboxylase. Since its discovery by Gale more than forty years ago, this can be considered among the most widely studied enzymes in biology, and one of the most complex models in enzyme regulation. The mechanism of control of the enzyme activity at the transcriptional, post-transcriptional and post-translational levels, as well as the fine regulation by antizyme, are discussed in detail. The second group of contributions deals wi th AdoMet decarboxylase, propylamine transferase, polyamine oxidase and the other enzymes related to polyamine interconversion and regeneration.

The chapter dealing with serum amine oxidases also focuses attention on their catalytic mechanism, as these enzymes have been studied in greater depth. As the presentation of topics whose experimental basis is rapidly developing is likely to stimulate the reader‘s interest, many bibliographic references have been included.Readers could find this book poor, as far as many topics are dealt with in a relatively little space, but we believe it essential to trace the background of our present knowledge in the field of amine oxidases, stressing the future outlook of research on these enzymes, for they are becoming more and more important in general and medical biochemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The polyamines are ubiquitous and essential organic cations in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. This book is a comprehensive survey of the development of knowledge of their physiological and structural roles. Currently, the genetic and regulatory determinants of the amines and their cellular composition are being explored actively as parameters of normal physiology and aberrant pathologies. Cancer, virus infection, and protozoan parasitism are major examples of the later groups. Studies of the control of polyamine metabolism are providing important therapeutic leads. Further, the structural roles of the amines are being determined at molecular levels, contributing to the understanding of polynucleotide and protein organization and interaction, as well as to the solution of problems of genome transfer. These subjects describe a burgeoning biochemical area involving compounds whose roles in cytoplasmic and nuclear function include numerous aspects of organelle structure, polymer synthesis, and interactions.

This book was released on 2020-08-09 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbes are ubiquitous in nature. Among microbes, fungal communities play an important role in agriculture, the environment, and medicine. Vast fungal diversity has been found in plant systems. The fungi associated with any plant system are in the form of epiphytic, endophytic, and rhizospheric fungi. These associated fungi play important roles in plant growth, crop yield, and soil health. The rhizospheric fungi present in rhizospheric zones have a sufficient amount of nutrients released by plant root systems in the form of root exudates for growth, development, and activities of microbes. Endophytic fungi enter in host plants mainly through wounds that naturally occur as a result of plant growth, or develop through root hairs and at epidermal conjunctions. The phyllospheric fungi may survive or proliferate on leaves, depending on the extent of influences of material in leaf diffuseness or exudates. The diverse group of fungal communities is a key component of soil-plant systems, where they are engaged in an intense network of interactions in the rhizospheric, endophytic, and phyllospheric areas, and they have emerged as an important and promising tool for sustainable agriculture. These fungal communities help to promote plant growth directly or indirectly by mechanisms for plant growth-promoting (PGP) attributes. These PGP fungi can be used as biofertilizers, bioinoculants, and biocontrol agents in place of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in an environmentally and eco-friendly manner. This book covers the current knowledge of plant-associated fungi and their potential biotechnological applications in agriculture and allied sectors. This book should be useful to scientists, researchers, and students of microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture, molecular biology, environmental biology, and related subjects.
