Book excerpt: Excerpt from Polly Sees the World at War IT was a warm Spring day in late April, a sun shiny, comforting hopeful sort of day that half apologized for its sister days of wind and rain and promised the real beginning of Spring. In the city the people on the sidewalks hummed little snatches of song to themselves as they went about their work and remembered all the pleasant things that they had ever wanted to do. - Old plans long put away as impossible were brought out and eagerly reconsidered, for in the Spring every thing is possible. The sparrows Spluttered and splashed in the mud-puddles, and the dogs barked and chased them, frisky and joyous in spite of their repeated failures to catch them. All the world loves Spring, for it is the time of year when the spirit of adventure is strongest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ... chapter xix good-by The next week, the Farwells and Polly bade farewell to Pixie's Haunt. It was a sad parting. The war had done much to bring them all near together in the common bond of sympathy, and work, and though no one mentioned it, they all felt that if things turned out as they hoped, Cyril and Lois would bind them still closer. Even Polly was a little depressed when the hour of actual leaving arrived. "I don't see why it didn't rain," she said crossly to Gerald. "It would have made going so much easier. But do look at this wasteful sunshine." They were in the automobile waiting in the court for the others. Gerald had come down purposely to run them up to London, where they would take the train to Liverpool. "What do you want it to rain for? We've had a deluge for three days," he said in answer to Polly. "Yes, and on any one of them I would have gladly gone, ' Polly returned. ' Anything sadder and drearier than that garden yesterday, I never saw, but to-day, why I want to be in it and stay in it." "Stay in what?" asked Genevieve, as she and Judy came across the lawn. "Bed?" "Goodness, no, the rose garden," Polly replied. "I'm just kicking about this glorious weather." "Don't--it may turn to rain, if it hears you," Genevieve begged; "and we do want the country to be cheerful when our Belgians arrive." "When do you expect them?" "In a day or two," Judy replied. "Twenty of them. Think of it, and some of them without hands." "Don't! I can't bear even to hear about it," Polly pleaded. "They'll keep you busy taking care of them, won't they?" "I hope so," Judy said quietly. "When is your Belgian family coming!" Polly asked Gerald. "I don't know," he replied. "The Pater offered to give three rooms to them ages ago, but they've not showed...

Book excerpt: During World War I, as young men journeyed overseas to battle, American women maintained the home front by knitting, fundraising, and conserving supplies. These became daily chores for young girls, but many longed to be part of a larger, more glorious war effort--and some were. A new genre of young adult books entered the market, written specifically with the young girls of the war period in mind and demonstrating the wartime activities of women and girls all over the world. Through fiction, girls could catch spies, cross battlefields, man machine guns, and blow up bridges. These adventurous heroines were contemporary feminist role models, creating avenues of leadership for women and inspiring individualism and self-discovery. The work presented here analyzes the powerful messages in such literature, how it created awareness and grappled with the engagement of real girls in the United States and Allied war effort, and how it reflects their contemporaries' awareness of girls' importance.

Book excerpt: Chief Chapman Scanandoah (1870–1953) was a decorated Navy veteran who served in the Spanish-American War, a skilled mechanic, and a prize-winning agronomist who helped develop the Iroquois Village at the New York State Fair. He was also a historian, linguist, philosopher, and early leader of the Oneida land claims movement. However, his fame among the Oneida people and among many of his Hodinöhsö:ni’ contemporaries today rests with his career as an inventor. In the era of Thomas Edison, Scanandoah challenged the stereotypes of the day that too often portrayed Native Americans as primitive, pre-technological, and removed from modernity. In An Oneida Indian in Foreign Waters, Hauptman draws from Scanandoah’s own letters; his court, legislative, and congressional testimony; military records; and forty years of fieldwork experience to chronicle his remarkable life and understand the vital influence Scanandoah had on the fate of his people. Despite being away from his homeland for much of his life, Scanandoah fought tirelessly in federal courts to prevent the loss of the last remaining Oneida lands in New York State. Without Scanandoah and his extended Hanyoust family, Oneida existence in New York might have been permanently extinguished. Hauptman’s biography not only illuminates the extraordinary life of Scanandoah but also sheds new light on the struggle to maintain tribal identity in the face of an increasingly diminished homeland.

Book excerpt: Set in the rural French farmland and forest west of Verdun, this World War II story is filled with intrigue, action, and romance. Alphonse DeBoy and his three grandchildren--Aurlie, Josette, and Luc--have been supplying food to their American visitor, Maj. Mark Dornier, for close to a year from their farm just outside Les Petites Islettes east of Verdun. Dornier parachuted into the Fort Domaniale de Lachalade in October 1943, and he's been living at a World War I French artillery camp. He's waiting for a second British officer, Lt. Alex Ryder, to join him. Ryder is in love with a secretary, Polly Berson, who is really a captain in the SOE. She also happens to be the cousin of Aurlie, Josette and Luc. To complicate things further, Josette and Aurlie develop feelings for Dornier. As Dornier gathers information on German defensive positions, the Nazis have developed several weapons to slow down the Allies when they invade, leaving it to the SOE and its operatives to gather intelligence on the weapons.

Forster calls 'the 1939 State', namely the anticipation of the Second World War between the Munich crisis of 1938 and the end of the Phoney War in the spring of 1940. Steve Ellis investigates not only myriad responses to the imminent war but also various peace aims and plans for post-war reconstruction outlined by such writers as T. S. Eliot, H. G. Wells, J. B. Priestley, George Orwell, E. M. Forster and Leonard and Virginia Woolf. He argues that the work of these writers is illuminated by the anxious tenor of this period. The result is a novel study of the 'long 1939', which transforms readers' understanding of the literary history of the eve-of-war era.

It is World War II, and Franny and her parents, Sina and Old Tom, enjoy a quiet life on a farm on Vancouver Island. Franny writes, Sina sculpts, and Old Tom tends to their many gardens—including the ancient, mysterious night garden. Their peaceful life is interrupted when their neighbor, Crying Alice, begs Sina to watch her children while she goes to visit her husband at the military base because she suspects he’s up to no good. Soon after the children move in, letters arrive from their father that suggest he's about to do something to change their lives; and appearances from a stubborn young cook, UFOs, hermits, and ghosts only make life stranger. Can the forbidden night garden that supposedly grants everyone one wish help them all out of trouble? And if so, at what cost? The Night Garden is a poignant and hilarious story from acclaimed children's author Polly Horvath.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An estimated forty thousand Jews were murdered during the Russian Civil War between 1918 and 1922. As the Dust of the Earth examines the Yiddish and Russian literary response to the violence (pogroms) and the relief effort, exploring both the poetry of catastrophe and the documentation of catastrophe and care. Brilliantly weaving together narrative fiction, poetry, memoirs, newspaper articles, and documentary, Harriet Murav argues that poets and pogrom investigators were doing more than recording the facts of violence and expressing emotions in response to it. They were interrogating what was taking place through a central concept familiar from their everyday lifeworld—hefker, or abandonment. Hefker shaped the documentation of catastrophe by Jewish investigators at pogrom sites impossibly tasked with producing comprehensive reports of chaos. Hefker also became a framework for Yiddish writers to think through such incomprehensible violence by creating new forms of poetry. Focusing less on the perpetrators and more on the responses to the pogroms, As the Dust of the Earth offers a fuller understanding of the seismic effects of such organized violence and a moving testimony to the resilience of survivors to process and cope with catastrophe.
