Book Synopsis Alimentary Orientalism by : Yin Yuan
Download or read book Alimentary Orientalism written by Yin Yuan and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-16 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What, exactly, did tea, sugar, and opium mean in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain? Alimentary Orientalism reassesses the politics of Orientalist representation by examining the contentious debates surrounding these exotic, recently popularized, and literally consumable things. It suggests that the interwoven discourses sparked by these commodities transformed the period’s literary Orientalism and created surprisingly self-reflexive ways through which British writers encountered and imagined cultural otherness. Tracing exotic ingestion as a motif across a range of authors and genres, this book considers how, why, and whither writers used scenes of eating, drinking, and smoking to diagnose and interrogate their own solipsistic constructions of the Orient. As national and cultural boundaries became increasingly porous, such self-reflexive inquiries into the nature and role of otherness provided an unexpected avenue for British imperial subjectivity to emerge and coalesce.

Book excerpt: A charming, deeply imaginative debut novel about a young girl who is immortalized in her father’s illustrated books containing clues to their family secrets. Romilly Kemp and her eccentric painter father have happy but sheltered lives in a ramshackle mansion in the English countryside. When her father finds fame with a series of children’s books starring Romilly as the main character, everything changes: exotic foods appear on the table, her father appears on TV and strangers appear at their door, convinced the books will lead them to a precious prize. But as time passes, Romilly’s father becomes increasingly suspicious of the outside world until, before her eyes, he begins to disappear within himself. She returns to his illustrations, looking for a way to connect with her ailing father, and finds a series of clues he’s left just for her. This treasure hunt doesn’t lead her to gold or jewels, but something worth far more—a shocking secret that is crucial to understanding her family. Written with tremendous heart and charisma, The Book of Hidden Wonders is an unforgettable story about growing up, facing mortality and discovering the hidden wonders that make us who we are.

Book excerpt: A flirtation across the social divide may lead to lasting love—or betrayal—in this sparkling Edwardian romance by the New York Times–bestselling author. Polly Marsh wasn’t born into high society, but she has high ambitions—and confidence that her beauty is enough to land a dashing nobleman. Taking a position as a stenographer for a prestigious family firm, she soon finds that she’s succeeded in capturing the attention of Lord Peter. Others—such as his mother the duchess and Peter’s brother the marquis—are not as delighted by the situation as Polly is. Everyone seems to believe Peter’s intentions are unserious, and some are willing to sabotage. But Polly is nothing if not determined. The only question left to be answered is whether her faith is well-placed . . . This historical novel, previously published under the names Jennie Tremaine and Marion Chesney, comes from the author known for her popular Hamish Macbeth and Agatha Raisin series and praised as “a romance writer who deftly blends humor and adventure”(Booklist).
Book Synopsis Talk and Social Interaction in the Playground by : Carly W. Butler
Download or read book Talk and Social Interaction in the Playground written by Carly W. Butler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a rich and detailed empirical account of children's play and interaction in the school playground. Drawing on the approaches of ethnomethodology and conversation analysis, 'Talk and Social Interaction in the Playground' examines the organisation of membership and social action in a game created by a group of children. It offers rich insights into the methods and practices used by children to produce play and social order, making a significant and substantial contribution to the study of talk-in-interaction, as well as to studies of children's play, competencies, and social interaction. The book demonstrates the importance of putting aside preconceived assumptions about how children talk and interact in order to reveal the situated methods and practices that children use - not because they are children, but because they are social beings. As well as appealing to scholars of ethnomethodology and conversation analysis, ’Talk and Social Interaction in the Playground’ will be of interest to students and researchers in a range of disciplines, including child studies, developmental psychology, education, applied linguistics, and sociology.
