Book excerpt: The case studies provided in this booklet describe pollution prevention efforts undertaken by industrial facilities with the assistance of the Illinois Waste Management and Research Center (WMRC). These companies were referred to WMRC by their local POTWs in an effort to help the companies take a pollution prevention approach to solving their discharge problems. In some instances, relatively simple process modifications have been undertaken to achieve pollution prevention. In other cases, companies have implemented innovative technologies. The recommendations implemented as a result of these efforts have enabled companies to achieve compliance without installing expensive treatment systems and have often generated considerable savings in raw material costs. These case studies illistrate the achievements that can be made when various agencies work together with private industry to solve environmental problems.

Book Synopsis Nature Based Solutions for Wastewater Treatment by : Katharine Cross
Download or read book Nature Based Solutions for Wastewater Treatment written by Katharine Cross and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are 2.4 billion people without improved sanitation and another 2.1 billion with inadequate sanitation (i.e. wastewater drains directly into surface waters), and despite improvements over the past decades, the unsafe management of fecal waste and wastewater continues to present a major risk to public health and the environment (UN, 2016). There is growing interest in low cost sanitation solutions which harness natural systems. However, it can be difficult for wastewater utility managers to understand under what conditions such nature-based solutions (NBS) might be applicable and how best to combine traditional infrastructure, for example an activated sludge treatment plant, with an NBS such as treatment wetlands. There is increasing scientific evidence that treatment systems with designs inspired by nature are highly efficient treatment technologies. The cost-effective design and implementation of ecosystems in wastewater treatment is something that exists and has the potential to be further promoted globally as both a sustainable and practical solution. This book serves as a compilation of technical references, case examples and guidance for applying nature-based solutions for treatment of domestic wastewater, and enables a wide variety of stakeholders to understand the design parameters, removal efficiencies, costs, co-benefits for both people and nature and trade-offs for consideration in their local context. Examples through case studies are from across the globe and provide practical insights into the variety of potentially applicable solutions.

Book Synopsis Searching for the profit in pollution prevention case studies in the corporate evaluation of environmental opportunities by : James Boyd
Download or read book Searching for the profit in pollution prevention case studies in the corporate evaluation of environmental opportunities written by James Boyd and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of pollution prevention, or "P2," signifies a new, proactive environmental mindset that targets the causes, rather than the consequences, of polluting activity. While anecdotal evidence suggests that P2 opportunities exist and that many have been pursued, there is also the perception that the pace of P2 is far too slow. To explore that claim -- and to shed light on barriers to P2 innovation -- this paper presents case studies of industrial P2 projects that were in some way unsuccessful. Economic, financial, and accounting analysis is used to assess the rationale for, and soundness of, these corporate decisions. While based on a very limited sample, the evidence contradicts the view that firms suffer from organizational weaknesses that make them unable to appreciate the financial benefits of P2 investments. Instead, the projects foundered because of significant unresolved technical difficulties, marketing challenges, and regulatory barriers. Based on evidence from the cases, the paper concludes with a discussion of environmental policy reforms likely to promote P2 innovation.
