Book excerpt: Many North American plants have characteristics that are especially promising for creating varieties needed to expand food production, and there are excellent prospects of generating new economically competitive crops from these natives. The inadequacy of current crops to meet the food demands of the world’s huge, growing population makes the potential of indigenous North American food plants even more significant. These plants can also generate crops that are more compatible with the ecology of the world, and many also have inherent health benefits. Presenting detailed scholarship, a thoroughly accessible style, and numerous entertaining anecdotes, North American Cornucopia: Top 100 Indigenous Food Plants is a full-color book dedicated to the most important 100 native food plants of North America north of Mexico that have achieved commercial success or have substantial market potential. The introductory chapter reviews the historical development of North American indigenous crops and factors bearing on their future economic success. The rest of the book consists of 100 chapters, each dedicated to a particular crop. The book employs a user-friendly chapter format that presents the material in sections offering in-depth coverage of each plant. The first section of each chapter provides information on the scientific and English names of the plants, followed by a section on the geography and ecology of the wild forms, accompanied by a map showing the North American distribution. A section entitled "Plant Portrait" comprises a basic description of the plant, its history, and its economic and social importance. This is followed by "Culinary Portrait," concerned with food uses and culinary vocabulary. The chapters then provide an analysis of the economic future of each crop, discuss notable and interesting scientific or technological observations and accomplishments, and present extensive references.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various aspects of reproductive morpholohy of the acerola which included floral differentiation and development, ovule development, gametogenesis, and embriogenesis were studied and summarized in this paper. Floral bud differentiation from initiation to emergence occurred in 8 to 10 days on primari branches in active vegetative growth. Anthesis was observed approximately 7 days after the date of emergence. Thus, anthesis occurred 15 to 17 days after floral initiation and 21 to 25 days elapsed between anthesis and ripe fruits. Simultaneous production of flowers and fruits on the same plant was a common phenomenon. There was much variation and abnomality in ovule development, megagametogenesis, and embryo-sac development. What appeared to be the usual or the preponderant type of development in whych pollination takes place and seeds are produced is considered here to be the normal development and any deviation in development from this usual type is considered to be abnormal. Both types are described and discussed in this paper. Normal embryo-sac development was like the Penaea-type. No nucellar polyembryony was observed in acerola. Parthenocarpy in acerola seemed to be an inherent character and was evidenced by the abnormal types of development. In geral, pollen grains of acerola showed normal development. Two exceptions are described. Pollen grains of acerola were generally only on the day of anthesis and germinablity seemed to be influenced by the time of day of anther dehiscence.

Book excerpt: Two rather different elements combine to explain the origin of this volume: one scientific and one personal. The broader of the two is the scientific basis-the time for such a volume had arrived. Geology had made remarkable progress toward an understanding of the phys ical history of the Caribbean Basin for the last 100 million years or so. On the biological side, many new discoveries had elucidated the distributional history of terrestrial orga nisms in and between the two Americas. Geological and biological data had been combined to yield the timing of important events with unprecedented resolution. Clearly, when each of two broad disciplines is making notable advances and when each provides new insights for the other, the rewards of cross-disciplinary contacts increase exponentially. The present volume represents an attempt to bring together a group of geologists, paleontologists and biologists capable of exploiting this opportunity through presentation of an interdisciplinary synthesis of evidence and hypothesis concerning interamerican connections during the Cretaceous and Cenozoic. Advances in plate tectonics form the basis for a modern synthesis and, in the broadest terms, dictate the framework within which the past and present distributions of organisms must be interpreted. Any scientific dis cipline must seek tests of its conclusions from data outside of its own confines.
