Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Body and Time is an innovative and concise survey of penetrating essays, conceptualizing the body as a physiological system embedded in a social network. In its complex and multilayered structure, it is aligned to and overlaps with other related functions. Contributors to this publication are members of the International Sociological Association Research Committee 54 – ‘The Body in the Social Sciences’, and their contributions specifically refer to the RC54 Mid-Term Conference – ‘The Mobile Interface and Social Change’, held at ‘Sapienza’, University of Rome, 6 December, 2012. What distinguishes the architecture of the book is that, collectively, it constitutes a challenge to the digital media paradigm in which the body is treated simply as a two dimensional icon of space and time; a relatively ‘free form’ with all kinds of narratives generated by the multimedia. Order in sequence should, indeed, be the key phrase incorporating four incisive problems dealt with in the thirteen chapters forming the ‘body’ of the book: identity, temporality, hierarchy and territoriality. In short, the volume demonstrates how fundamentally different ways of experiencing time are also determined by the differing cultural use of bodily rhythms – a ‘two-sided narration’ namely, of space and time. Central to the understanding of this interdependence is the study of interpersonal synchronization – increasing knowledge through the investigation of how rhythm, music, chants, dance, prayer and other harmonizing practices support social integration. This book will attract wide interest, especially from students, researchers and academics in the social sciences, neurosociology, digital studies and further afield.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the moving qualities of mountains by utilising theories, ideas and processes which contribute to a larger understanding of these geological forms. In highlighting the fluid attributes of mountains the authors offer an alternative to the traditional approach of the sciences and the humanities, which address mountains as static geological or geographical features. The essays in this collection posit that movement impacts the relationship between society and mountains – travelling landscape objects, constructing design and artistic translations, climbing and experiencing changing atmospheres and the different ways of seeing from mountain peaks – and that physical, intellectual and spiritual motion is integral to their understanding. This innovative collection will be of great interest to scholars of geography, art, architecture, history, theology and philosophy.

Book excerpt: "From the Enlightenment to the present day, and using a variety of case studies from all the continents, the authors show us how our ideas of and about mountains have changed with the times and how a wide range of policies, from border delineation to forestry as well as nature protection and social programs, have been shaped according to them. A rich hybrid analysis of geography, history, culture, and politics."--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book follows the journeys of those fleeing war, poverty or political crises, risking their lives as they attempt to find sanctuary in Europe. Over the past 25 years, almost 40,000 migrants have been reported missing or died due to drowning or exhaustion on the borders of Europe. 6,000 migrants died in 2016 alone, making it the deadliest year on record. Growing numbers of arrivals since 2015 have caused a wave of panic to sweep across the countries of the European Union, which has responded with an increasingly entrenched policy – the only one it considers appropriate – of fortifying its external borders. As a result, numerous walls and fences have sprung up to "regulate the flows", new camps have been opened and reception centres have been set up beyond the frontiers of Europe, all accompanied by the steady militarisation of surveillance and repression. The EU has thus been just as active in precipitating this "migrant crisis" as it has been in prolonging its effects. Indeed, this crisis calls into question the entire European system for border management and policies on immigration and reception. Deconstructing preconceptions, changing the way we see others, probing borders and mapping the nexus of control and detention, the collection of articles, maps, photographs and illustrations in this Atlas provide an important critical geography of migration policies. Perfect for journalists, activists, students of geopolitics at school or university, this Atlas seeks, above all, to give migrants a voice.
