Wie legitimierte er seine prägende Herrschaft? Auf welchen Grundlagen sich das politische System gründete, welches ihm so viel Macht zukommen ließ? Wie funktionierte die politische Praxis und welche Ideologie verfolgte das Herrschaftsklientel? Zu beginn wird die Geschichte Kenias vor „Uhuru“ beleuchtet, um Kenia im Gesamtkontext seiner Vergangenheit zu sehen. Wie sah das Gebiet des heutigen Kenias vor der Erschließung durch die Europäer aus? Wodurch wurde die Unabhängigkeit erreicht? Welche Kräfte beteiligten sich an dem Streben nach nationaler Autonomie? Nachfolgend wird die Entwicklung der kenianischen Verfassung nach „Uhuru“ gezeigt, da selbige unmittelbar mit der herrschenden Elite in Verbindung steht, wobei dies als wichtiges Element zum Verständnis für die Rechtfertigung und Festigung der politischen Systeme die Kenia erlebt hat gesehen wird. Im dritten Hauptteil wird die Person Jomo Kenyatta biografisch behandelt, da er der Hausarbeit das Thema gegeben hat und seine Persönlichkeit die Politik elementar formte. Ebenfalls wird in dieser Arbeit die politische Praxis untersucht. Wie gestaltete sich die Partizipation der Abgeordneten des Parlaments und wodurch konnte Kenyatta seine Macht behaupten? Was tat er für die Bevölkerung? Welchen wirtschaftlichen Weg wählte er? Wie veränderte sich die kenianische Politik während der Ära Kenyatta? Angemerkt werden muss noch, dass die Hausarbeit leider nicht alle Ebenen des politischen Gebildes während der Amtszeit Kenyattas abdecken kann, sondern nur einen groben Überblick liefert, da die Thematik hochkomplex ist und den normalen Rahmen einer solchen wissenschaftlichen Arbeit, welche an einen bestimmten Umfang gebunden ist, sprengen würde. Insbesondere werden die wirtschaftlichen Aspekte nur leicht angerissen und die Machtkämpfe zwischen der KANU internen Opposition und Kenyatta finden keine genauere Untersuchung. Bei der Literaturrecherche ergaben sich eine Vielzahl von Monographien und Sammelbände zu dieser Thematik. Für die Hausarbeit dienten vor allem die Publikationen von Martin Pabst4, Stefan Mair5, Keith Kyle6 sowie Reinhard Würkner7 und das Werk von Norman Miller in Zusammenarbeit mit Rodger Yeager8 Verwendung. Des Weiteren haben diverse andere Bücher und Veröffentlichungen, die hier nicht mehr extra aufgeführt werden sollen, Eingang in diese Arbeit gefunden.

First, the struggle for independence that was mainly characterized by the claim for land that had been taken away by the colonizers. The authors in this book analyse historical trajectories of Kenya's nationalism trends while highlighting the role of political leaders, large as well as small ethnic groups, perennial conflicts, community as well as religious leaders, among others. The discussions demonstrate that quest for a national identity that is inclusive at all levels whether politically, economically, religiously and ethnically has marked Kenya's struggle for nationalism, sometimes leading to violence, especially during election periods, national unity through political coalitions and reconciliation, as well as institutional reforms. In conclusion, the authors demonstrate that while Kenya is gradually advancing towards national cohesion, there are still many challenges yet to be surmounted.

Some view it as one of the greatest "successes" of the post-independence period; others see it as an example of all that is wrong with African development. Henry Bienen approaches this controversy by asking whether the concept of political participation has been properly understood in the African context. His case study of political participation in Kenya discusses administration, party politics, ethnicity, and class. He suggests that in a system dominated by elites, individuals and groups exert influence primarily through patron-client networks and local administrative and party organs. Local politics is the most important arena for most people, it is argued. As long as the regime adopts policies which maximize economic growth and take account of peasant middle and small holders, and as long as individual representatives can be replaced even though no change of regime occurs, limited political participation leads to political stability.
