Book excerpt: Party Politics in Germany is the only English-language study of its kind and examines the phenomenon of party politics in the Federal Republic through comparison across time and space. It draws upon new data from the 2002 Federal elections and recent Land elections, as well as on a far more explicitly comparative literature than is generally found in single-country studies. The book not only sheds new light on political phenomena in Germany but also allows students of the comparative method to apply some of the key concepts, models and approaches with which they are familiar to the rich context of a single country study.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Parties and Party Policies in Germany During the past decade, and more especially in its latter half, there has been apparent a determination on the part of many persons in this country to see in every legislative enactment of Germany evidences of hostility to the United States. This inclination has been stimulated by citizens of other countries who would be glad to see these two great nations on unfriendly terms. Believing that this Opinion had no foundation in fact, and thinking that the energies of the German legislator were directed solely towards the upbuild ing of the Empire, while even the most rabid partisan cared more for the defeat of opposing factions than for the embarrassment of foreign nations, a careful study was made of the programs of all the parties of Ger many as well as of their attitude on all questions that might have a bearing upon international relations. This examination was made in the midst of the last campaign, when each faction, in its desire to bring confusion to its opponents, zealously sought for words and acts that showed a hostile spirit towards friendly nations. Book Synopsis German Electoral Politics by : Geoffrey K. Roberts
Download or read book German Electoral Politics written by Geoffrey K. Roberts and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of German electoral politics has been neglected of late, despite being one of the most pervasive elements of the German political process. Geoffrey Roberts exciting new book argues that concentration on electoral politics facilitates deeper understanding and appreciation of German political system. It provides explanations and analysis of the federal electoral system, its evolution and the challenges which have been made to its format; discusses the role of electoral politics in relation to political parties It goes on to evaluate the effectiveness of the German electoral system in relation to its functions, and challenges the premise that electoral politics makes a difference in Germany. Ultimately the book aims to reconcile the apparently limited role which elections have in determining the composition of governments with the notion that there is a "permanent election campaign" in existence in German politics.

Book Synopsis Alternative Politics by : Thomas Poguntke
Download or read book Alternative Politics written by Thomas Poguntke and published by Edinburgh : Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The political success of the German Green Party during the 1980s spearheaded the 'green wave' in other West European democracies. Indeed, despite their defeat in 1990, the Greens still hold the balance of power in several Land parliaments and stand a good chance of making a comeback in the 1994 Bundestag elections." "This book is the first comprehensive account of the organisation ideology and political style of the German Greens. Comparing them to established parties, the book gives a full account of the German party system, and assesses the adaptability of both types of party to a changing social and political environment in the new Europe. It examines intra-party political culture, the social profiles of voters and party activists, and the party's place in the context of the 'New Politics'. A challenging read suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduates studying the West European political system."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis The Green Factor In German Politics by : Gerd Langguth
Download or read book The Green Factor In German Politics written by Gerd Langguth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Green Party evolved out of a number of protest movements of the late 1960s and 1970s and became a major political factor in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1983 when it drew enough votes to send twenty-seven members to the Bundestag. The author follows the party’s rise from new social and ecological groups to its current place in the Federal parliament and provincial legislatures. He addresses the questions raised by Green Party members and by the unrest they have engendered—whether they believe in parliamentary democracy, what effect their policy of replacing delegates in parliament at midsession will have on the parliament and the party, and how they relate to Germany’s traditional political parties. The answers to these and other questions form the background for an appraisal of the Green party in which the author traces the development of its role from a political irritant to a factor of serious influence.

Book excerpt: In this volume, originally published in 1984, the author examines the social composition of the electorate, of membership and leadership of West German political parties, as well as their representation and finances. Kolinsky argues that while affiliation and electorates remained distinct, the social composition of party organisations became narrower and more uniform. The book examines how the parties became alienated from contemporary West German society and discusses the difficulties experienced by opposition parties in trying to develop alternative strategies, in particular those of the Green Party.
