This book was released on 2016-05-21 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 1999 was a watershed in the history of Nigeria as it witnessed the peaceful transfer of power from the military to the political class. Given Nigerias tumultuous history of successive military interventions, this development was the first genuine transition that saw the military elite transferring political power to civilians without itching to stage a comeback. This edited volume, composed of 22 chapters discusses the form, trajectory and substance of democratic governance in post-military Nigeria between 1999 and 2014. It is a compilation of well researched essays and narratives on Nigerian government and politics. The book is a multi-disciplinary assessment of Nigerias democratic strides, including contributions from scholars in a broad range of disciplines such as history, sociology and anthropology, political science, economics, international relations, among others. The book examines the factors responsible for the resilience of the current democratic governance structures, in spite of centripetal and centrifugal forces frustrating democratic consolidation in the country. It equally interrogates these factors and makes appropriate recommendations for overcoming them. Key themes covered in the book in the Boko Haram insurgency, governance and corruption, militancy, sharia law, Islamic banking amongst others. It sheds light on contending issues affecting, afflicting and retarding the countrys progress. Issues like ethnicity, electoral corruption, human rights abuses, privatization of national assets, kidnapping and armed robbery, overbearing leadership personality and many more are critically discussed. Local government autonomy and the challenges of grassroots development and civil service administration are also thoroughly analysed. Democratic Governance and Political Participation in Nigeria 1999-2014 is a detailed, exhaustive, deep, stimulating and captivating narrative of the Nigerian situation. It is enthusiastically recommended for those who wish to know more about contemporary Nigerian history. As a collection of contemporary issues on the Nigerian government and politics, the book is recommended for courses in politics and governance in Nigeria in particular and Africa in general. It is an invaluable companion for both graduate and undergraduate students as well as scholars of African politics.

It traces the causes of the governance menace to multiple factors that are not limited to poverty, unemployment, and media. The book documents how election violence cripples the nation-building process across many African countries. Consequently, it reveals that states have lost their manifest destiny of national transformation in Africa because they cannot guarantee that legitimate candidates, who should win elections, due to the widespread manipulation of violence at all levels of electoral engineering. The chapters rely on the cases and changing dynamics of elections and electoral violence in the different Nigerian states. It traces the origins of elections, the nature and patterns of a number of past elections as well as the roles of youth, judiciary, electoral umpire, social media, and gender on the changing nature of elections in Nigeria.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State - Society Relations in Nigeria explores the problematics of democratic consolidation, conflicts and reforms in Nigeria's contemporary political history. It analyses the, history, structures and dynamics of low intensity conflicts, the neo-liberal economic and political reforms, the war against corruption, as well as the challenges of democratization, good governance and development. The book adopts an integrative methodology based on a trans-disciplinary, multi-track, and empirically-grounded analytical framework. On the strength of a dynamic interface of social theory and empirical realities, the contributors offer useful functional guides to Nigerian policy makers and local and international stakeholders concerned with the challenges of helping to rebuild Africa's most populous and largest oil producing state. _________________________________________ "Dr Kenneth Omeje's edited book could not be timelier or more valuable. Nigeria is one of the strongest and most influential countries in Africa. Yet it has struggled with internal unrest, failures in economic development, and serious flaws in its fledgling electoral democracy. Dr Omeje's book provides a comprehensive, balanced, and objective assessment of governmental and societal developments over the last decade along with a first class analysis of the deeper political and societal factors at work." - Dr Princeton N. Lyman Former US Ambassador to Nigeria & Adjunct Senior Fellow for African Policy Studies, Council on Foreign Relations, Washington DC "It is hard to underestimate the significance of Nigeria, not only geopolitically as a major oil supplier to the world's markets, but also, as a bellwether for the heath of Africa. The 2007 elections have demonstrated that the concerns addressed in Kenneth Omeje's important book State-Society Relations in Nigeria speak to the political transitions under way across the continent and the sorts of challenges that emerge in the interstices of neoliberal reform, resource-dependency and a vibrant polity in which new civic organizations are hitting their stride. A timely and pathbreaking volume." - Prof Michael Watts Director of the Centre for African Studies, University of California, Berkeley, USA "Kenneth Omeje and his co-authors must be congratulated for their presentation of a wealth of new material in this synthetic, concisely written and well informed survey of a key period in Nigeria's post-colonial history. A much needed and convincingly argued contribution to the disentanglement of rhetoric from reality under the Obasanjo presidency." - Prof Daniel Bach Centre for African Studies, Institut d'Etudes Politiques, University of Bordeaux, France.

Book excerpt: This volume engages in an in-depth discussion of Nigerian politics. Written by an expert group of Nigerian researchers, the chapters provide an overarching, Afrocentric view of politics in Nigeria, from pre-colonial history to the current federal system. The book begins with a series of historical chapters analyzing the development of Nigeria from its traditional political institutions through the First Republic. After establishing the necessary historical context, the next few chapters shift the focus to specific political institutions and phenomena, including the National Assembly, local government and governance, party politics, and federalism. The remaining chapters discuss issues that continue to affect Nigerian politics: the debt crisis, oil politics in the Niger Delta, military intervention and civil-military relations, as well as nationalism and inter-group relations. Providing an overview of Nigerian politics that encompasses history, economics, and public administration, this volume will be useful to students and researchers interested in African politics, African studies, democracy, development, history, and legislative studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2015, Nigeria's voters cast out the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). Here, A. Carl LeVan traces the political vulnerability of Africa's largest party in the face of elite bargains that facilitated a democratic transition in 1999. These 'pacts' enabled electoral competition but ultimately undermined the party's coherence. LeVan also crucially examines the four critical barriers to Nigeria's democratic consolidation: the terrorism of Boko Haram in the northeast, threats of Igbo secession in the southeast, lingering ethnic resentments and rebellions in the Niger Delta, and farmer-pastoralist conflicts. While the PDP unsuccessfully stoked fears about the opposition's ability to stop Boko Haram's terrorism, the opposition built a winning electoral coalition on economic growth, anti-corruption, and electoral integrity. Drawing on extensive interviews with a number of politicians and generals and civilians and voters, he argues that electoral accountability is essential but insufficient for resolving the representational, distributional, and cultural components of these challenges.
