Book Synopsis Republican Politics and English Poetry, 1789-1874 by : Stephanie Kuduk Weiner
Download or read book Republican Politics and English Poetry, 1789-1874 written by Stephanie Kuduk Weiner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-08-03 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores how poets who espoused republican political ideals sought to embody and advance those principles in their verse. By examining a range of canonical and non-canonical authors-including Blake, Shelley, Cooper, Linton, Landor, Meredith, Thomson and Swinburne, Kuduk Weiner connects the formal strategies of republican poems to the political theory and expressive cultures of republican radicalism. Her new study traces a strain of powerful, complex political poetry that casts new light on the political and literary history of nineteenth-century England.

Book Synopsis Byron: The Poetry of Politics and the Politics of Poetry by : Roderick Beaton
Download or read book Byron: The Poetry of Politics and the Politics of Poetry written by Roderick Beaton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'It is no great matter, supposing that Italy could be liberated, who or what is sacrificed. It is a grand object - the very poetry of politics. Only think - a free Italy!!! Why, there has been nothing like it since the days of Augustus.' So wrote Lord Byron in his journal, in February 1821, only days before the outbreak of revolution in Greece, where three years later he would die in the service of the revolutionary cause. For a poet whose life and work are interlaced with action of multiple sorts, surprisingly little attention has been devoted to Byron's engagement with issues of politics. This volume brings together the work of eminent Byronists from seven European countries and the USA to re-assess the evidence. What did Byron mean by the 'poetry of politics'? Was he, in any sense, a 'political animal'? Can his final, fateful involvement in Greece be understood as the culmination of earlier, more deeply rooted quests? The first part of the book examines the implications of reading and writing as themselves political acts; the second interrogates the politics inherent or implied in Byron's poems and plays; the third follows the trajectory of his political engagement (or non-engagement), from his abortive early career in the British House of Lords, via the Peninsular War in Spain to his involvement in revolutionary politics abroad.
Book Synopsis The Cambridge Companion to American Poetry and Politics since 1900 by : Daniel Morris
Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to American Poetry and Politics since 1900 written by Daniel Morris and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-04-27 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cambridge Companion to Twentieth Century American Poetry and Politics shows how American poets have addressed political phenomena since 1900. This book helps students, teachers, and general readers make sense of the scope and complexity of the relationships between poetry and politics. Offering detailed case studies, this book discusses the relationships between poetry and social views found in work by well-established authors such as Wallace Stevens, Langston Hughes, and Gwendolyn Brooks, as well as lesser known, but influential figures such as Muriel Rukeyser. This book also emphasizes the crucial role contemporary African-American poets such as Claudia Rankine and leading spoken word poets play in documenting political themes in our current moment. Individual chapters focus on specific political issues - race, institutions, propaganda, incarceration, immigration, environment, war, public monuments, history, technology - in a memorable and teachable way for poetry students and teachers.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Political and Occasional Poems: Winthrop Mackworth Praed There are still in em'stence a few copies of a pamphlet entitled Trash, in which the squibs of the St. Ives' election Of 1832, unsuccessfully conducted by Praed on the Conservative side against Mr. James Halse as a Reformer, were reprinted for the benefit of those interested in the borough, or in the fortunes of the defeated candidate. They were naturally of a slight and local character, not intended for preserva tion, and have been omitted in accordance with what, it is believed, would have been the decided Opinion of the writer himself. Book Synopsis Women, Poetry, and Politics in Seventeenth-Century Britain by : Sarah C. E. Ross
Download or read book Women, Poetry, and Politics in Seventeenth-Century Britain written by Sarah C. E. Ross and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women, Poetry, and Politics in Seventeenth-Century Britain offers a new account of women's engagement in the poetic and political cultures of seventeenth-century England and Scotland, based on poetry that was produced and circulated in manuscript. Katherine Philips is often regarded as the first in a cluster of women writers, including Margaret Cavendish and Aphra Behn, who were political, secular, literary, print-published, and renowned. Sarah C. E. Ross explores a new corpus of political poetry by women, offering detailed readings of Elizabeth Melville, Anne Southwell, Jane Cavendish, Hester Pulter, and Lucy Hutchinson, and making the compelling case that female political poetics emerge out of social and religious poetic modes and out of manuscript-based authorial practices. Situating each writer in her political and intellectual contexts, from early covenanting Scotland to Restoration England, this volume explores women's political articulation in the devotional lyric, biblical verse paraphrase, occasional verse, elegy, and emblem. For women, excluded from the public-political sphere, these rhetorically-modest genres and the figural language of poetry offered vital modes of political expression; and women of diverse affiliations use religious and social poetics, the tropes of family and household, and the genres of occasionality that proliferated in manuscript culture to imagine the state. Attending also to the transmission and reception of women's poetry in networks of varying reach, Sarah C. E. Ross reveals continuities and evolutions in women's relationship to politics and poetry, and identifies a female tradition of politicised poetry in manuscript spanning the decades before, during, and after the Civil Wars.
