Book excerpt: The aim of this article is to shed light on the current characteristic of Polish OFDI investments during the period 2000-2012 as well as to present the possible prospects of its development in light of the current theories and existing research. The value of Polish Outward Foreign Direct Investments (OFDI) stock has risen dynamically from USD 1.01 billion in 2000 to USD 57.4 billion in 2012. This new phenomenon reflects the desire of many Polish companies to strengthen their position in the regional, more distant markets, as well as to gain an access to resources that they are lacking. Even during the recent global economic crisis despite growing flows of FDI in the world, Poland was among these countries that experienced an increase of outward FDI stock possessed by Polish companies.

Book excerpt: Foreign Direct Investment in Transitional Economies presents a detailed investigation into the recent changes in the patterns and determinants in inflows of FDI to transitional economies. The author re-evaluates conventional theories of FDI, and analyses the many changes taking place in the nature of international business, both in terms of the drives of the trans-border transactions, and the strategic orientation of the firms that engage in those transactions. This comparative investigation is based on original research detailing the experiences of FDI in the economies of China and Poland through case studies of over 200 multinationals, and takes into account the dynamic forces of globalization and their effects on FDI.

Book excerpt: Globalization emerged as a very important trend reshaping the economic landscape. One of the major drivers of this process is free capital flow between the geographical regions. In this new competitive environment it is crucial for both the companies and the policy makers to gain a good understanding of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) processes. In particular, what features of a region are important in attracting and retaining FDI and what are the temporal patterns in FDI development. The novelty of the approach lies in discovering the inter-industry and temporal dependencies in FDI and also in separate analysis of several industry segments. The results give new insights into the location choice patterns used by different types of companies. Also, to the best of my knowledge, it is the first empirical study of the time evolution of the FDI; especially in a sense of what kinds of prior investments influence later ones. The research is conducted at powiat level of territorial division in Poland.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Substantial increases in agricultural investments in developing countries are needed to combat poverty and realize food security and nutrition goals. There is evidence that agricultural investments can generate a wide range of developmental benefits, but these benefits cannot be expected to arise automatically and some forms of large-scale investment carry risks for host countries. Although there has been much debate about the potential benefits and risks of international investment, there is no systematic evidence on the actual impacts on the host country and their determinants. In order to acquire an in-depth understanding of potential benefits, constraints and costs of foreign investment in agriculture and of the business models that are more conducive to development, FAO has undertaken research in developing countries. This publication summarizes the results of this research, in particular through the presentation of the main findings of case studies in nine developing countries. It presents case studies on policies to attract foreign investment in agriculture and their impacts on national economic development in selected countries in Africa, Asian and Latin America.
