Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986, this landmark text is the definitive guide to clinical trials, written by one of the leading experts in the field. This fully-updated second edition continues to be the most authoritative reference text on randomized clinical trials. It contains a wealth of practical information on the design, conduct, and analysis of both single center and multicenter trials. No other book on clinical trials offers as much detail on such issues as sample size calculation, stratification and randomization, data systems design, development of consent forms, publication policies, preparation of funding requests, and reporting procedures. While the basics of design, conduct, and analysis of clinical trials remain the same, there have been significant changes since the first edition of Clinical Trials was published two decades ago. In this new edition, the author discusses the refinements and improvements made to methods and procedures, changes in the policies and guidelines underlying trials, as well as requirements for registration of trials. He also discusses current practices for data sharing, for gender representation, for treatment effects monitoring, and for ethical standards of clinical trials. The importance of the randomized controlled trial has grown significantly over time and they are now the cornerstone of all evidence-based medicine. Still rich in tables, checklists, charts, and other resources for the trialist, the second edition of Clinical Trials is an indispensable reference for clinicians, biostaticians, epidemiologists, and anyone involved in the design and implementation of a clinical trial.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text uses both theory and practical application of leadership and management precepts to lead the reader through a variety of common scenarios. The theory is tied to actual experiences and scenarios that educate the reader through the critical thought process of decision making. This adds a level of learning not found in many texts that address either theory or practical applications but fail to link them. The topics discussed range from effective techniques in communications, decision-making issues and methods, and resource management. Issues that are critical to the manager such as emergency planning, response to critical incidents, supervision of specialty teams and operational issues are explored. One of the essential skills discussed for the manager is the collection, compilation, and interpretation of data. Data interpretation is the driving force in the allocation of resources and deployment of personnel. Further, this skill is important in the development of funding through grants. The manager's role in discipline, use of force, and morale are addressed. Timely events regarding the law enforcement manager's response to weapons of mass destruction, racial profiling, and litigation receive attention. Systems analysis is explored to educate the manager to appreciate upstream and downstream impacts of their decisions. Contemporary issues from the perspective of the supervisor and manager is addressed, with lessons learned and information conveyed that is applicable at all levels of management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first censuses were taken and crop yields recorded in ancient times, data collection and analysis have been essential to improving the functioning of society. Foundational work in calculus, probability theory, and statistics in the 17th and 18th centuries provided an array of new tools used by scientists to more precisely predict the movements of the sun and stars and determine population-wide rates of crime, marriage, and suicide. These tools often led to stunning advances. In the 1800s, Dr. John Snow used early modern data science to map cholera “clusters” in London. By tracing to a contaminated public well a disease that was widely thought to be caused by “miasmatic” air, Snow helped lay the foundation for the germ theory of disease.Gleaning insights from data to boost economic activity also took hold in American industry. Frederick Winslow Taylor's use of a stopwatch and a clipboard to analyze productivity at Midvale Steel Works in Pennsylvania increased output on the shop floor and fueled his belief that data science could revolutionize every aspect of life.2 In 1911, Taylor wrote The Principles of Scientific Management to answer President Theodore Roosevelt's call for increasing “national efficiency”: Today, data is more deeply woven into the fabric of our lives than ever before. We aspire to use data to solve problems, improve well-being, and generate economic prosperity. The collection, storage, and analysis of data is on an upward and seemingly unbounded trajectory, fueled by increases in processing power, the cratering costs of computation and storage, and the growing number of sensor technologies embedded in devices of all kinds. In 2011, some estimated the amount of information created and replicated would surpass 1.8 zettabytes. In 2013, estimates reached 4 zettabytes of data generated worldwide.
