Book excerpt: A double-scattering technique was employed to measure the polarization parameter in elastic proton-proton scattering at .75, 1.03, 1.32, 1.63, 2.24, and 2.84 GeV. An external proton beam from the Brookhaven Cosmotron was focussed on a three inch long liquid hydrogen target and the elastic recoil and scattered protons were detected in coincidence by scintillation counters. The polarization produced in the scattering process was inferred from the azimuthal asymmetry exhibited in the scattering of the recoil beam from a carbon target. This asymmetry was measured by a set of two scintillation counter telescopes which symmetrically viewed the carbon target. The analyzing power of this arrangement was previously determined in an independent experiment employing a 40% polarized proton beam. The corrected values of the polarization parameter are exhibited as a function of the center-of-mass scattering angle for each incident beam energy. The prediction of the Regge theory that the polarization parameter in elastic proton-proton scattering is related to the total proton-proton and proton-antiproton cross sections was found to be consistent with the experimental results. The measurements were obtained at beam kinetic energies of 0.330, 0.680, and 0.740 GeV at the 184-in. synchrocyclotron and 1.70, 2.85, 3.50, 4.00, 5.05, and 6.15 GeV at the Bevatron. The angular regions measured were from 20 to 100 degrees center of mass; the square of the four-momentum transfer ranged from 0.1 to 0.8 (GeV/c)2.
