Cumulus cloud and Haze M particle size distributions are considered for various optical depths at wavelengths of 4.0 and 10.0 micrometers. Results at these wavelengths are compared to results at a wavelength of 0.5 micrometers for the same physical atmosphere. Initially the radiative transfer integral equations are derived which include the Stokes polarization vector. From these integral equations a Monte Carlo simulation technique is used to photon histories through the atmosphere. The effects of multiple scattering on the polarization state of the scattered intensity is included. A diffuse scattering ground which causes complete depolarization of the incident intensity is included in the simulation model.

A large part of the book is also useful for studies of light scattering by particles in comets, the interplanetary and interstellar medium, circumstellar disks, reflection nebulae, water bodies like oceans and suspensions of particles in a gas or liquid in the laboratory. Throughout the book symmetry principles, such as the reciprocity principle and the mirror symmetry principle, are employed. In this way the theory is made more transparent and easier to understand than in most papers on the subject. In addition, significant computational reductions, resulting from symmetry principles, are presented. Hundreds of references to relevant literature are given at the end of the book. Appendices contain supplementary information such as a general exposition on properties of matrices transforming Stokes parameters of light beams. Each chapter concludes with a number of problems with answers or hints for solution. The readers should have some basic knowledge of physics and mathematics. The book is suitable as a textbook for advanced undergraduates and graduate students. It will also be of interest to science professionals in one of the many disciplines in which electromagnetic scattering plays an important role, like astrophysics, atmospheric optics, remote sensing, marine optics, biophysics and biomedicine.

Polarized infrared images of the research vessel, R/V POINT SUR were taken extensively during the Electro-Optical Propagation Assessment in Coastal Environment (EOPACE) operational period in Mar-Apr 1996 at Point Loma, San Diego. Contrast improvement analysis of these images requires an infrared model of the research vessel. This thesis models the apparent infrared signature of the R/V POINT SUR using ship skin temperature records from the EOPACE measurements. Using a simple geometric model and adopting a pixel-by-pixel approach, the emitted radiation for each pixel surface is calculated from the Planck radiation law. Radiation reflected off the pixel surface is estimated using the polarized SeaRad atmospheric propagation code. The total radiance is compensated for atmospheric transmittance with the Navy Aerosol Model to arrive at the apparent radiance at the sensor. The apparent radiance is translated into apparent temperature for comparison with the recorded images to validate the accuracy of the model. There is moderate agreement between the model and recorded images with 45-50% of the pixels falling within 1.75K of the measured apparent temperatures.

In the LWIR, the observed normalized circular polarization anisotropy, S3/SO, of a signal should not require any atmospheric corrections. Because natural LWIR light in not circularly polarized, only an active system will be able to exploit this finding. Both the Mie scattering and polarimetric transport models indicate that, in the LWIR, the atmospheric effect on the transport of the two orthogonal components of linearly polarized signals should be significantly different. In the LWIR both the observed degree of lineal polarization and the observed normalized linear polarization anisotropy Si/SO of a signal should require atmospheric corrections.
