Book Synopsis Informational Limits in Optical Polarimetry and Vectorial Imaging by : Matthew R. Foreman
Download or read book Informational Limits in Optical Polarimetry and Vectorial Imaging written by Matthew R. Foreman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-23 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central to this thesis is the characterisation and exploitation of electromagnetic properties of light in imaging and measurement systems. To this end an information theoretic approach is used to formulate a hitherto lacking, quantitative definition of polarisation resolution, and to establish fundamental precision limits in electromagnetic systems. Furthermore rigorous modelling tools are developed for propagation of arbitrary electromagnetic fields, including for example stochastic fields exhibiting properties such as partial polarisation, through high numerical aperture optics. Finally these ideas are applied to the development, characterisation and optimisation of a number of topical optical systems: polarisation imaging; multiplexed optical data storage; and single molecule measurements. The work has implications for all optical imaging systems where polarisation of light is of concern.
Book Synopsis Synthetic Aperture Radar Polarimetry by : Jakob J. van Zyl
Download or read book Synthetic Aperture Radar Polarimetry written by Jakob J. van Zyl and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the application of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar to earth remote sensing based on research at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). This book synthesizes all current research to provide practical information for both the newcomer and the expert in radar polarimetry. The text offers a concise description of the mathematical fundamentals illustrated with many examples using SAR data, with a main focus on remote sensing of the earth. The book begins with basics of synthetic aperture radar to provide the basis for understanding how polarimetric SAR images are formed and gives an introduction to the fundamentals of radar polarimetry. It goes on to discuss more advanced polarimetric concepts that allow one to infer more information about the terrain being imaged. In order to analyze data quantitatively, the signals must be calibrated carefully, which the book addresses in a chapter summarizing the basic calibration algorithms. The book concludes with examples of applying polarimetric analysis to scattering from rough surfaces, to infer soil moisture from radar signals.
Book Synopsis Direct and Inverse Methods in Radar Polarimetry by : W.M Boerner
Download or read book Direct and Inverse Methods in Radar Polarimetry written by W.M Boerner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 1076 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This foreword deals exclusively with the planning, organization, and execution of the Workshop's scientific as well as cultural programs. It is opened with a synopsis on how the global political changes that occurred immediately after the Workshop caused the ~elay in producing the proceedings, followed by a brief exposition on need, timeliness, and importance of this second ARW in the field of electromagnetic imaging, radar remote sensing, and target versus clutter di~rimination; and an outline of the objectives. An informal discussion about some of the organizational details, a retrospective summary of events, and a preview of the third workshop, planned for 1993 September 19-25, is intended to recapture the spirit of this second NATO Advanced Research Workshop (1988 September 18-24), and will reveal how successful it was in compar ison to the first of 1983 September 18-24, how its accomplishments may be appreciated and why a third and last workshop was requested by its participants to take place during 1993 September 19-25.

Book Synopsis Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar by : Irena Hajnsek
Download or read book Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar written by Irena Hajnsek and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-24 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book focuses on the practical application of electromagnetic polarimetry principles in Earth remote sensing with an educational purpose. In the last decade, the operations from fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar such as the Japanese ALOS/PalSAR, the Canadian Radarsat-2 and the German TerraSAR-X and their easy data access for scientific use have developed further the research and data applications at L,C and X band. As a consequence, the wider distribution of polarimetric data sets across the remote sensing community boosted activity and development in polarimetric SAR applications, also in view of future missions. Numerous experiments with real data from spaceborne platforms are shown, with the aim of giving an up-to-date and complete treatment of the unique benefits of fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar data in five different domains: forest, agriculture, cryosphere, urban and oceans.

Book Synopsis Astronomical Polarimetry by : Jaap Tinbergen
Download or read book Astronomical Polarimetry written by Jaap Tinbergen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-08-22 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation from astronomical objects generally shows some degree of polarization. Although this polarized radiation is usually only a small fraction of the total radiation, it often carries a wealth of information on the physical state and geometry of the emitting object and intervening material. Measurement of this polarized radiation is central to much modern astrophysical research. This handy volume provides a clear, comprehensive and concise introduction to astronomical polarimetry at all wavelengths. Starting from first principles and a simple physical picture of polarized radiation, the reader is introduced to all the key topics, including Stokes parameters, applications of polarimetry in astronomy, polarization algebra, polarization errors and calibration methods, and a selection of instruments (from radio to X-ray). The book is rounded off with a number of useful case studies, a collection of exercises, an extensive list of further reading and an informative index. This review of all aspects of astronomical polarization provides both an essential introduction for graduate students, and a valuable reference for practising astronomers.
