Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Butter Making: For Young Creamery Butter Makers, Creamery Managers and Private Dairymen I do not pretend to fill a "long felt want" by publishing this little book. Indeed, I realize how absurd it is for a man who denounces the so-called "general purpose" cow to the dairymen, to publish a small "general purpose" book. Nevertheless, I hope many private dairymen as well as creamery men will find pointers in it which will make it worth their while to read it. If I only succeed in making the reader eager for more information, I shall have accomplished one of my purposes, and the other, to make some money for myself, I trust a quick sale of this edition will realize. To Second Edition. Five years in this age of continuous inventions make it necessary to change and add a good deal to the first edition. Though I have been asked why an illustration of a Danish Creamery was used instead of an American one on the front page, I have retained it in order to induce other States to follow, as Minnesota has, the Danish plan of having good permanent brick buildings with cement or flagstone floor. To Third Edition. I find but little to change from the second edition; the greatest progress in the dairy appliances has been in better and more sanitary manufactory. As to the art of buttermilk, there seems to have been a tendency to aim at quantity rather than quality, which I must warn against. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Pointers on Making Creamery Butter in the South There is a great lack of uniformity in the requirements for the several grades of cream among creameries that have adopted grad ing. Systems for buying cream on the basis of the quality of butter that can be manufactured from it. Each creamery defines its grades to suit its particular conditions, except in those States where official grades have been established by law. It is natural that in a highly developed dairy section where the manufacture of high-quality butter is well established the grading of cream should be on a higher plane than in a section where dairying is carried on as a side line. Book excerpt: Team Teaching at the College Level describes a college-level team teaching program which affords unusual opportunities for developing an educational environment that fosters productive personal relationships between and among college students and faculty. The book describes the nature and scope of selected team teaching programs; the manner in which such programs can be administered; the potential impact of team teaching on a developing curriculum; the role of faculty and students who constitute the teaching-learning team; the particular housing requirements of team teaching programs; and finally, the limitations and future prospects of this emerging concept. In the following chapters frequent reference is made to the philosophy, program, and methodology of Boston University's College of Basic Studies, where a team system was first developed in 1949 and where an entire collegiate two-year program of studies functions on a team teaching plan. This College's extensive experience with team teaching has made possible refinements which may interest those seeking to broaden their understanding of the potential role and function of team teaching in higher education. * Rich in case studies, examples, and in-chapter elements that focus on the challenges of launching and operating a technology venture * In-depth examination of intellectual property development, valuation, deal structuring, and equity preservation, issues of most relevance to technology start-ups * Extensive discussion of technology management and continuous innovation as a competitive advantage * Addresses the issue of leading, managing, motivating, and compensating technical workers * More time on the fundamentals of marketing and selling, as these are elements of entrepreneurshipcommonly most neglected by engineers and scientists

Book excerpt: Consolation of Philosophy (Latin: Consolatio Philosophiae) is a philosophical work by Boethius, written around the year 524. It has been described as the single most important and influential work in the West on Medieval and early Renaissance Christianity, and is also the last great Western work of the Classical Period. Anicius Manlius Severinus Boëthius, commonly called Boethius (c. 480–524 or 525 AD), was a philosopher of the early 6th century. He was born in Rome to an ancient and prominent family which included emperors Petronius Maximus and Olybrius and many consuls. His father, Flavius Manlius Boethius, was consul in 487 after Odoacer deposed the last Western Roman Emperor. Boethius, of the noble Anicia family, entered public life at a young age and was already a senator by the age of 25. Boethius himself was consul in 510 in the kingdom of the Ostrogoths. In 522 he saw his two sons become consuls. Boethius was imprisoned and eventually executed by King Theodoric the Great, who suspected him of conspiring with the Eastern Roman Empire. While jailed, Boethius composed his Consolation of Philosophy, a philosophical treatise on fortune, death, and other issues. The Consolation became one of the most popular and influential works of the Middle Ages.

Book excerpt: In this analysis of one major philosopher by another, Gilles Deleuze identifies three pivotal concepts - duration, memory, and lan vital - that are found throughout Bergson's writings and shows the relevance of Bergson's work to contemporary philosophical debates. He interprets and integrates these themes into a single philosophical program, arguing that Bergson's philosophical intentions are methodological. They are more than a polemic against the limitations of science and common sense, particularly in Bergson's elaboration of the explanatory powers of the notion of duration - thinking in terms of time rather than space.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emily Riddle has lived her entire life inside a patriarchal commune led by her father. There are many rules, but the most important one, 'keep it in the commune', is the most difficult for her to follow... especially since the only people willing to champion her cause live on the outside. When Emily learns her father has promised her to Lorenzo, a perverted man who has plans for her that extend well beyond marriage and kids, she rebels. Regardless of the consequences, she refuses to marry someone who'd rather beat her than caress her. A day of hooky that starts out as a tiny act of defiance - sneaking out of the commune for a swim - turns into a day filled with hope. After spending time with Levi, a man camping near the lake, she finds what true romance looks like and catches a glimpse into a future that's filled with love and admiration rather than hate and submission. That tiny peek is enough to change the course of Emily's existence and makes it nearly impossible for her to go back to the commune and pretend she'll ever be able to tolerate the life chosen for her instead of the life she longs for. One that includes Levi. Fighting to escape the commune, its leaders, and her fiancé proves to be more dangerous than Emily expected. The secrets she knows, as the leader's daughter, will either follow her to the grave or send her - and Levi - there.
