Book excerpt: From the dementedly morbid, to viciously sexy. The Lady Bathory takes us, once again, into the soul of the truly tormented. Violent symphonies meld with torturous attraction and Gods in gilded cages caress...with tender, sadistic seduction.Gia takes us to the altar of the Goddess of lust in Purgatory and the never ending agony of love. Truly, an all out fiendishly passionate look into the mind of the mad...".Eyes of the Abyss is a dangerously intimate look into the mind of its Author. Mournful works such as Shattered, On the Fields of Mars and Sacrifice chill to the core with lamentations for the lost, such as Tower. And hymns of bitter solitude like Misunderstood. From the thrilling and perverse, to the sorrowful agony of loss. The glass wall view into the heart of the Abyss. Lady Gia Bathory cuts deep into the flesh of what raw lyrical artistry is made of. Even Beatnik flows such as Justin and Treading Dawn blend almost seamlessly into the eclectic brew that is Gia's latest work. Not only a candid collection of lyrical liquid, Eyes of the Abyss is dually a strikingly open diary of Lady Bathory's personal life. Granting readers a closeness that is otherwise impossible for them to have with her. She rips her heart open and bleeds for the world, showing them that yes, she is a Goddess.but also a woman who feels deeper than most can comprehend. ."There comes a point in everyone's life where they are deep in the Abyss. Be it by their own or someone else's doing, they sink. When you are that far down you stare into the void gaping before you.and sometimes, the Abyss looks back. That is when you know that madness has taken you as his lover." - Lady Gia Bathory" - From GiaBathory.com

He moved from Kansas to North Dakota looking for work and a better life. Working in the cold weather brought him the clarity and peace he sought. He wrote the poems in this collection not for fun, but as therapy to relieve the anguish of his soul. Each poem represents a piece of himself that he laid out so he could begin to heal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franz Fühmann's magnum opus. At the Burning Abyss is a gripping and profoundly personal encounter with the great expressionist poet Georg Trakl. It is a taking stock of two troubled lives, a turbulent century, and the liberating power of poetry. Picking up where his last book, The Jew Car, left off, Fühmann probes his own susceptibility to ideology's seductions--Nazism, then socialism--and examines their antidote, the goad of Trakl's enigmatic verses. He confronts Trakl's "unlivable life," as his poetry transcends the panaceas of black-and-white ideology, ultimately bringing a painful, necessary understanding of "the whole human being: in victories and triumphs as in distress and defeat, in temptation and obsession, in splendor and in ordure." In 1982, the German edition of At the Burning Abyss won the West German Scholl Siblings Prize, celebrating its "courage to resist inhumanity." At a time of political extremism and polarization, has lost none of its urgency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mythologized as the era of the “good war” and the “Greatest Generation,” the 1940s are frequently understood as a more heroic, uncomplicated time in American history. Yet just below the surface, a sense of dread, alienation, and the haunting specter of radical evil permeated American art and literature. Writers returned home from World War II and gave form to their disorienting experiences of violence and cruelty. They probed the darkness that the war opened up and confronted bigotry, existential guilt, ecological concerns, and fear about the nature and survival of the human race. In Facing the Abyss, George Hutchinson offers readings of individual works and the larger intellectual and cultural scene to reveal the 1940s as a period of profound and influential accomplishment. Facing the Abyss examines the relation of aesthetics to politics, the idea of universalism, and the connections among authors across racial, ethnic, and gender divisions. Modernist and avant-garde styles were absorbed into popular culture as writers and artists turned away from social realism to emphasize the process of artistic creation. Hutchinson explores a range of important writers, from Saul Bellow and Mary McCarthy to Richard Wright and James Baldwin. African American and Jewish novelists critiqued racism and anti-Semitism, women writers pushed back on the misogyny unleashed during the war, and authors such as Gore Vidal and Tennessee Williams reflected a new openness in the depiction of homosexuality. The decade also witnessed an awakening of American environmental and ecological consciousness. Hutchinson argues that despite the individualized experiences depicted in these works, a common belief in art’s ability to communicate the universal in particulars united the most important works of literature and art during the 1940s. Hutchinson’s capacious view of American literary and cultural history masterfully weaves together a wide range of creative and intellectual expression into a sweeping new narrative of this pivotal decade.

Book excerpt: The first English-language collection of Greek Modernist George Sarantaris, described by Nobel Laureate Odysseus Elytis as ìthe greatest poet of the Generation of "30," whose laconic lyric poetry oscillates between the philosophical and the erotic. Sarantaris' lucid poems, with their epigrammatic simplicity, recall the ancient Greek poetic tradition while drawing on the French and Italian influences of his time. Louka's translation conveys the freshness of Sarantaris's aphoristic style, metaphorical wit, and philosophical musings. In their condensed precision and attention to landscape, Sarantaris's poems may remind English-language readers of his American contemporary Lorine Niedecker and others in the Objectivist circle. Book excerpt: "Starts off as a manifesto but becomes richer and more suggestive as it develops."—The New York Sun For Wallace Stevens, "Poetry is the scholar's art." Susan Howe—taking the poet-scholar-critics Charles Olson, H.D., and William Carlos Williams (among others) as her guides—embodies that art in her 1985 My Emily Dickinson (winner of the Before Columbus Foundation Book Award). Howe shows ways in which earlier scholarship had shortened Dickinson's intellectual reach by ignoring the use to which she put her wide reading. Giving close attention to the well-known poem, "My Life had stood—a Loaded Gun," Howe tracks Dickens, Browning, Emily Brontë, Shakespeare, and Spenser, as well as local Connecticut River Valley histories, Puritan sermons, captivity narratives, and the popular culture of the day. "Dickinson's life was language and a lexicon her landscape. Forcing, abbreviating, pushing, padding, subtracting, riddling, interrogating, re-writing, she pulled text from text...."

Book excerpt: The book: Abyss Of The Moon, is a voyage across the timeless oceans of age; a personal pilgrimage as a search for compatible love in a modern society where people tend to outgrow and outlive one another. It's the passageways in the labyrinth that mirror the heroic journey. The voyage is a search for those reopened doorways. Here life unfolds for its wider possibilities in compassion through shared intimacy. It's a rendering of allocated spiritual, mental and sexual understanding with enthusiasm, determination, and spiritedness.Where the doors widen to cross the abyss of loss, love becomes life regained. Like a rising moon, nothing can make the heart pound or race so profoundly as love. Love lost is an absolute horror locked in grief; yet found, it is an ecstatic dream becoming a reality. So we light a little candle for love's loss, but we listen for the gong of its resounding bell. For love will come upon the waves of life's small ocean with sails spread to catch the winds of change. Life will regain its full passion and joy to feel enriched again. And whatever treasure might have been lost will be regained in abundance.

Book excerpt: This National Book Award-winning debut poetry collection is a "powerfully evocative" (The New York Review of Books) meditation on the black female figure through time. Robin Coste Lewis's electrifying collection is a triptych that begins and ends with lyric poems meditating on the roles desire and race play in the construction of the self. In the center of the collection is the title poem, "Voyage of the Sable Venus," an amazing narrative made up entirely of titles of artworks from ancient times to the present—titles that feature or in some way comment on the black female figure in Western art. Bracketed by Lewis's own autobiographical poems, "Voyage" is a tender and shocking meditation on the fragmentary mysteries of stereotype, juxtaposing our names for things with what we actually see and know. A new understanding of biography and the self, this collection questions just where, historically, do ideas about the black female figure truly begin—five hundred years ago, five thousand, or even longer? And what role did art play in this ancient, often heinous story? Here we meet a poet who adores her culture and the beauty to be found within it. Yet she is also a cultural critic alert to the nuances of race and desire—how they define us all, including her own sometimes painful history. Lewis's book is a thrilling aesthetic anthem to the complexity of race—a full embrace of its pleasure and horror, in equal parts.
