Book excerpt: From the Newbery Medal-winning author of Seedfolks, Paul Fleischman, Joyful Noise is a collection of irresistible poems that celebrates the insect world. Funny, sad, loud, and quiet, each of these poems resounds with a booming, boisterous, joyful noise. The poems resound with the pulse of the cicada and the drone of the honeybee. They can be fully appreciated by an individual reader, but they're particularly striking when read aloud by two voices, making this an ideal pick for classroom use. Eric Beddows′s vibrant drawings send each insect soaring, spinning, or creeping off the page in its own unique way. With Joyful Noise, Paul Fleischman created not only a fascinating guide to the insect world but an exultant celebration of life.

Book excerpt: As the phoenix emerges from its ashes, Zebian emerges ablaze in these pages, not only as a survivor of abuse, but as a teacher and healer for all those who have struggled to understand, reclaim, and rise above a history of pain. The book is divided into six chapters, and six stages of healing: Falling, Burning to Ashes, Sparks of Phoenix, Rising, Soaring, and finally, A New Chapter, which demonstrates a healthy response to new love as the result of authentic healing. With her characteristic vulnerability, courage, and softness, Zebian seeks to empower those who have been made to feel ashamed, silenced, or afraid; she urges them, through gentle advice and personal revelation, to raise their voices, rise up, and soar.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2012 National Book Award for Poetry. To read David Ferry’s Bewilderment is to be reminded that poetry of the highest order can be made by the subtlest of means. The passionate nature and originality of Ferry’s prosodic daring works astonishing transformations that take your breath away. In poem after poem, his diction modulates beautifully between plainspoken high eloquence and colloquial vigor, making his distinctive speech one of the most interesting and ravishing achievements of the past half century. Ferry has fully realized both the potential for vocal expressiveness in his phrasing and the way his phrasing plays against—and with—his genius for metrical variation. His vocal phrasing thus becomes an amazingly flexible instrument of psychological and spiritual inquiry. Most poets write inside a very narrow range of experience and feeling, whether in free or metered verse. But Ferry’s use of meter tends to enhance the colloquial nature of his writing, while giving him access to an immense variety of feeling. Sometimes that feeling is so powerful it’s like witnessing a volcanologist taking measurements in the midst of an eruption. Ferry’s translations, meanwhile, are amazingly acclimated English poems. Once his voice takes hold of them they are as bred in the bone as all his other work. And the translations in this book are vitally related to the original poems around them. From Bewilderment: October The day was hot, and entirely breathless, so The remarkably quiet remarkably steady leaf fall Seemed as if it had no cause at all. The ticking sound of falling leaves was like The ticking sound of gentle rainfall as They gently fell on leaves already fallen, Or as, when as they passed them in their falling, Now and again it happened that one of them touched One or another leaf as yet not falling, Still clinging to the idea of being summer: As if the leaves that were falling, but not the day, Had read, and understood, the calendar.

It is widely considered to be one of his most obscure works and has led to many conflicting interpretations. The poem describes a funeral arranged for the deceased Phoenix and Turtledove, respectively emblems of perfection and of devoted love. Some birds are invited, but others excluded. It goes on to state that the love of the birds created a perfect unity which transcended all logic and material fact. It concludes with a prayer for the dead lovers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romey's Order is an indelible sequence of poems voiced by an invented (and inventive) boy-speaker called Romey, set alongside a river in the South Carolina lowcountry. As the word-furious eye and voice of these poems, Romey urgently records--and tries to order--the objects, inscape, injuries, and idiom of his "blood-home" and childhood world. Sounding out the nerves and nodes of language to transform "every burn-mark and blemish," to “bind our river-wrack and leavings," Romey seeks to forge finally (if even for a moment) a chord in which he might live. Intently visceral, aural, oral, Atsuro Riley's poems bristle with musical and imaginative pleasures, with story-telling and picture-making of a new and wholly unexpected kind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry has been a way of expressing the inner feelings I've had about my unusual life. I was disfigured as an infant by a burning kerosene lamp, resulting in years of reconstructive surgery and a life apart from my family, being adopted by cousins. I feel like the phoenix that rises from the flames. The Stare What hurts one so about a stare.. The look that puts one on a pin, That stabs your heart without a care So curious lust is satisfied With rape of eyes that probes each pore,Intruding with relentlessness, The questioning that crawls like worms Over every inch of skin? You want to run away and hide; Instead you sit there, humbly, sore, Aching with defenselessness. It's you the victim, you who squirms, Yours the deficiency, the sin. The animal instincts serve us yet, The pecking order still is here. The rational mind makes us forget How thin indeed the polite veneer. Anniversary Song These were the happiest years I've lived, The seven we've been together. The storms were fewAnd in between Was a rainbow of life, Every hueOf fun and joy and calm delight...So many moments I know not whether could choose the best For comparison would beggar The richness and warmth of all the rest. We've drunk from a cup so full That few there are that know its measure. These poems reflect my inner life, its moments of inspiration and occasional despair "but of such is life in its fullest measure." (quote from "Realization").

Book excerpt: Reel to Reel, Alan Shapiro’s twelfth collection of poetry, moves outward from the intimate spaces of family and romantic life to embrace not only the human realm of politics and culture but also the natural world, and even the outer spaces of the cosmos itself. In language richly nuanced yet accessible, these poems inhabit and explore fundamental questions of existence, such as time, mortality, consciousness, and matter. How did we get here? Why is there something rather than nothing? How do we live fully and lovingly as conscious creatures in an unconscious universe with no ultimate purpose or destination beyond returning to the abyss that spawned us? Shapiro brings his humor, imaginative intensity, characteristic syntactical energy, and generous heart to bear on these ultimate mysteries. In ways few poets have done, he writes from a premodern, primal sense of wonder about our postmodern world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Phoenix and the Dragon: Poems of the Alchemical Transformation is the latest collection from award-winning poet, humorist, activist, and educator Adam Byrn Tritt, and it may be his most personal and compelling work yet. Tritt's previous books include Tellstones: Runic Divination in the Welsh Tradition, and the Gainesville Community Haggada. He also has several credits as a screenwriter and a playwright. While Tritt's poetry and essays have been published in numerous magazines and anthologies, The Phoenix and the Dragon is his first collection with a cohesive theme: transformation. "Alchemy," says Tritt, "is the art of transformation. It's about taking something of little intrinsic worth and changing it into something of tremendous value--changing lead into gold, for example. When you write poetry, you take experiences common to all people--small, everyday occurrances--and you distill them into their essence." Tritt, who won both the 2006 EPPIE Award for Poetry in an Anthology and the Book Club of South Florida Poetry Prize and is listed in Who's Who in U.S. Writers, Editors, and Poets, has also been a social worker and a middle school teacher. He is equally at home speaking in lecture halls, giving public readings in bookstores, and visiting elementary school classrooms, where he can be found surrounded by children begging him to read his story Bud the Spud just one more time. In 1995 he was an awarded an honorary doctorate for his work in Religious Tolerance and for the creation of TurningPoint, a program providing alternative healthcare for low-income individuals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 'The Phoenix Collection and Other Poems, ' Max Preston proffers three separately themed sections of artistic musings that are sure to resonate with each reader or listener. First, Preston presents a refreshing array of poems themed around nature, which were guided and inspired by a period of the poet's life when he lived in the Phoenix Mountains of North Carolina. He evokes the emotions presented to us by the natural world: beauty, complexity, comfort, spirituality, even hostility. The second section chronicles the cycle of life and the various experiences most of us can expect: love, marriage, birth, aging, death, and for some-rebirth.Finally, Preston examines the miscellaneous implications of simply being a human living with other humans. Some poems pose statements and reflect on our culture. Others are humorous but in whimsy may hint at some serious underlying thought, pain, or rebellion. Still others are more cerebral and personal, poems of searching and mystical, universal inquiry.

Book excerpt: This book traces D. H. Lawrence's development as a poet from his earliest to his latest poems. Focusing on the revision of poems in the Collected Poems, 1928, Mandell uncovers the implicit autobiographical narrative that underlies the collection and that dictates its structure. Lawrence rearranged and rewrote the poems to conform to a chronologic, thematic, and mythic plan, a plan he hints at in the unpublished Foreword to Collected Poems. In its final form, the poetry tells the story of Lawrence's "demon," a figure of his essential self, by recounting the chronological development of the "new" from the "old" self. Comparing form and content of versions of representative poems from the collection, Mandell analyzes the evaluation not only of Lawrence's poetic style but also of his ideas concerning human and physical nature. She contends that Lawrence was a mature poet with a developed system of poetic and philosophical thought by 1917, when he published Look! We Have Come Through! At that time he rewrote extensively. Through comparison of selected poems, several of which appear in print for the first time, we can reproduce Lawrence's emendations and thus depict the creative mind at work.

Book excerpt: In his first book of poems since his highly acclaimed June-tree, Peter Balakian continues to define himself as one of the most distinctive voices of his generation. Exploring history, self, and imagination, as well as his ongoing concerns with catastrophe and trauma, many of Balakian’s new poems wrestle with the aftermath and reverberations of 9/11. Whether reliving the building of the World Trade Towers in the inventive forty-three-section poem that anchors the book, walking the ruins of the Bosnian National Library in Sarajevo, meditating on Andy Warhol’s silk screens, or considering the confluence of music, language, and memory, Balakian continues his meditations on history, as well as on the harshness and beauty of contemporary life, that his readers have enjoyed over the years. In sensual, layered, and sometimes elliptical language, Balakian in Ziggurat explores absence, war, love, and art in a new age of American uncertainty.
