Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetry and the Child Upon this planet there dwell two strange races of people. The first is a tribe small of stature and delicate of limb, the members of which make their way into civilized society one by one, arriving among us entirely unable to look after themselves and quite ignorant of our language. Were it not that we take pity on their helplessness, they would perish miserably thousands, indeed, do so every year - but the majority are welcomed to our houses, fed and clothed by us, and, after a little while, they learn our speech and something of our habits. Yet for the brief space of their existence - a matter of about a dozen years - they remain as strangers among us. They tolerate our patronage and submit to our correction; they even court our admiration and our love. But they take little interest in the things we prize most; their ideals are not our ideals, and they seem to have acquired, in the country from which they came, a standard of values which can with difficulty be adjusted to the facts of this rough-and-tumble world. Moreover they see a universe quite different from that which is familiar to us. Our eyes are lamps in which the oil of reason more or less brightly burns to illuminate the hard and commonplace road of life; their eyes are charmed magic casements through which the moon of imagination pours, bathing the whole landscape in the light which never was on sea or land. One who was for a time a member of this little folk has described their universe in a memorable passage: The corn was orient and immortal wheat, which never should be reaped, nor was ever sown. I thought it had stood from everlasting to everlasting. The dust and stones of the street were as precious as gold; the gates were the end of the world. The green trees, when I saw them first through one of the gates, transported and ravished me; their sweetness and unusual beauty made my heart to leap, and almost mad with ecstasy, they were such strange and wonderful things. The Men! O what venerable and reverend creatures did the aged seem. Immortal Cherubims! And young men glittering and sparkling Angels, and maids strange seraphic pieces of life and beauty! Boys and girls, tumbling in the street and playing, were moving jewels. I knew not that they were born or should die; but all things abided eternally as they were in their proper places. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children's First Book of Poetry We hear much nowadays about the decline of poetry. No one reads poetry any more. Poets cannot make a living. The world has ceased to express its ideals in verse. The novel and the short story, rather than the epic or the lyric, furnish our instruction and our inspiration. The magazine and the newspaper are our substitute for a library; and these print verses only to fill out a column or a page. In short, we are living in a reflective, a scientific, a prose age. So we are told. Like most generalizations about the complex phenomena of modern life, this is only partially true. Every year brings new volumes of dramatic, narrative, and lyric poetry of high merit. Yeats, Synge, and Phillips; Noyes, Masefield, and Gibson; - these and scores of other names come to mind to prove that the gift of song has not fled the earth. Nor are the old poets forgotten. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children's Garland From the Best Poets: Selected and Arranged I have taken the liberty of omitting portions of a few poems, which would else have been too long or otherwise unsuitable for the collection; and, in a very few instances, I have ventured to substitute a word or a phrase, when that of the author has made the piece in which it occurs unfit for children's reading. The abbreviations I have been compelled to make in the Ancient Mariner, in order to bring that poem within the limits of this collection. Are so considerable as to require particular mention and apology. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetry for Children Alas, London is no longer to be the home of these boys, and the cloisters of the Old Grey Friars will soon moulder away, when the merry noise of sports and revels cease to awaken them to life. As I looked through the bars the other day watching the boys at their games, a strange fancy came to me. I thought I saw a pale and studious "Grecian" (as they call the head boys of the school, and walking at his side, with glittering eyes full of wonderment, was a younger lad - a boy with crisply curling black hair, and with ruddy brown complexion, and in his look so much lovableness and trustfulness that If lt myself envying the elder lad, whose hand rested so affectionately on the shoulder of his friend. I drew near to listen to their talk. The thoughtful Grecian was discoursing learnedly yet so sweetly about some deep matter of philosophy: it seemed somewhat beyond the younger boy, but he listened quietly, rapt in admiration. Suddenly the school-bell sounded. "Hurry on, Charles ''Mid deepest meditation sounds the knell' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Children of Phantasy Although having not originally been intended as a series, the poems beginning with My Love and ending with Love may, nevertheless, be re garded as such. Owing to their sweet simplicity and tender feeling, two translations from the Ger man have been embodied in this collection namely, the poems Lullaby, by W. Urban, and Slumber Song, by A. Traeger.
