Book excerpt: This book is about my life—a combination of poetic truths and an expression of a variety of emotions that I experienced through the process of my journey thus far. I started writing at age sixteen and continued over the years, and now at fifty-eight years old, I’m finally ready to share myself. The reason I decided to get my book published is for my family so I could leave a part of me that will last forever long after I’m gone—to leave a bit of love, inspiration, and hope and to help them on their journey in life. I want them to know that no matter what happens in life, if God has blessed you to wake up every morning, you have another opportunity to live life the way God intended you to, instead of just existing. Look for the blessing in each day. Love hard and play more. Remember that God blesses you to be a blessing to others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As well as producing one of the finest of all poetic traditions, ancient Greek culture produced a major tradition of poetic theory and criticism. Halliwell's volume offers a series of detailed and challenging interpretations of some of the defining authors and texts in the history of ancient Greek poetics: the Homeric epics, Aristophanes' Frogs, Plato's Republic, Aristotle's Poetics, Gorgias's Helen, Isocrates' treatises, Philodemus' On Poems, and Longinus On the Sublime. The volume's fundamental concern is with how the Greeks conceptualized the experience of poetry and debated the values of that experience. The book's organizing theme is a recurrent Greek dialectic between ideas of poetry as, on the one hand, a powerfully enthralling experience in its own right (a kind of 'ecstasy') and, on the other, a medium for the expression of truths which can exercise lasting influence on its audiences' views of the world. Citing a wide range of modern scholarship, and making frequent connections with later periods of literary theory and aesthetics, Halliwell questions many orthodoxies and received opinions about the texts analysed. The resulting perspective casts new light on ways in which the Greeks attempted to make sense of the psychology of poetic experience - including the roles of emotion, ethics, imagination, and knowledge - in the life of their culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this controversial essay collection, award-winning writer Shelby Stelle illuminates the origins of the current conflict in race relations--the increase in anger, mistrust, and even violence between black and whites. With candor and persuasive argument, he shows us how both black and white Americans have become trapped into seeing color before character, and how social policies designed to lessen racial inequities have instead increased them. The Content of Our Character is neither "liberal" nor "conservative," but an honest, courageous look at America's most enduring and wrenching social dilemma.

Book excerpt: In this beautiful collection of poems, remarkable for their plainspoken radiance, the bestselling author of The House on Mango Street and winner of the 2019 PEN/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature embraces her first passion-verse. With lines both comic and sad, Sandra Cisneros deftly-and dazzlingly-explores the human experience. For those familiar with Cisneros only from her acclaimed fiction, My Wicked Wicked Ways presents her in an entirely new light. And for readers everywhere, here is a showcase of one of our most powerful writers at her lyrical best. “Here the young voice of Esperanza of The House on Mango Street merges with that of the grown woman/poet. My Wicked Wicked Ways is a kind of international graffiti, where the poet—bold and insistent—puts her mark on those traveled places on the map and in the heart.” —Cherríe Moraga

Book excerpt: Johnnieas thought-provoking and soul-stirring poetry, written from the heart, captures the very essence of familiarayet original and sometimes unusualasubjects as he exposes himself to the world through his conversational tone and unique poetic voice. He speaks directly to the reader as he sheds a worthwhile light on subject matters often dismissed as unimportant. Johnnie has the poetas gift of making the ordinary circumstances of life that encompass us all seem mystical with an array of figures of speech and contrasting reasoning. Much of the truth discerned through his poetry is supported by biblical scripture which, subsequently, warrants a Bible for the reader to get the full understanding of many of the messages intended, hence entitled Poetic Truths.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Imageless Truths, Karen A. Weisman offers a new reading of Shelley's work in the context of the poet's changing constructions of poetic fictions. Shelley's understanding of language in general, and of the fictions and their rhetorical trope in particular, evolved throughout his career, and Weisman argues that it is in his self-consciousness over these transformations that we can find the primary motivating factor in the poet's philosophical and literary development. Weisman discerns in Shelley an ongoing quest for a mode of fiction-making that can accommodate both the poet's belief in a "metaphysical ultimate" and his anxiety over the implications of grounding poetic fictions too firmly in the details of everyday life. If Shelley's awareness of fictionality is a major element in the poetry, it is an awareness that comes with the troubled sense of the limits of fiction. Weisman contents that it is this persistent, double-edged anxiety that distinguishes Shelley from the other English Romantics. Her point is not intended to deny the validity or the continuing relevance of the deconstructionist perspective, nor the value of its various claims for Shelley; she is simply concerned that the instability of poetic fictions was eventually perceived as a "given" by Shelley, as the beginning premise which he acknowledged and then tried to move beyond. Imageless Truths will be of interest to students and scholars of English literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With themes wrapped around tabooed comedy routines, Fabled Truths, Volume Three is the third of three collections containing easy, but uncomfortable, self-portraits and poetic essays addressing social situations through parodies of American iconography, uncompromised profiling and mindless stereotyping. The book presents skewed modern snapshots of what a long history of bias has left on the shared consciousness of Americans, guiding the viewer’s outside and deeper inside the skins of what their own surface assessments of cultures, social practices and gender identities might be, with a challenge to cross the battle-lines between the fables and the truths of those assessments. Fabled Truths is not just about race and sex, the poor or the rich. It is about differences, minute and profound, the fragile separations between individuals, and how those thin lines deem every human being subject to becoming somebody’s punch-line, somebody’s joke, the center of a one-liner. Crossing paths in content, these 16 self-portraits and 20 poetic essays do not entirely define each other, very much like “those people” who live in the other part of town. Those “others” who we have to drive past to get to our part of town. Those “others” who, based on “a casual two second encounter. . . lead to our complete/one minute summation/of the “others” entire existence. . .”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetic Affairs deals with the complex and fascinating interface between literature and life through the prism of the lives and works of three outstanding poets: the German-Jewish poet and Holocaust survivor, Paul Celan (1920–1970); the Leningrad native, U.S. poet laureate, and Nobel Prize winner, Joseph Brodsky (1940–1996); and Germany's premier contemporary poet, Durs Grünbein (born 1962). Focusing on their poetic dialogues with such interlocutors as Shakespeare, Seneca, and Byron, respectively—veritable love affairs unfolding in and through poetry—Eskin offers unprecedented readings of Celan's, Brodsky's, and Grünbein's lives and works and discloses the ways in which poetry articulates and remains faithful to the manifold "truths"—historical, political, poetic, erotic—determining human existence.
