Book excerpt: Engaging with four English poems or groups of poems-the anonymous medieval Crucifixion lyrics; William Langland's Piers Plowman, John Donne's Divine Poems, and John Milton's Paradise Lost-this book examines the nature of poetic encounter with God. At the same time, the author makes original contributions to the discussion of critical dilemmas in the study of each poem or group of poems. The main linguistic focus of this book is on the nature of dialogue with God in religious poetry, an area much neglected by grammarians and often overlooked in studies of literary style. It constitutes an important contribution to our understanding of the relationship between literature and theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revealed is a collection of poems by Sandra Ruth Penro. These poems consist of scriptural acrostics, bible characters, childhood memories, and personal expressions of the emotions and trials of everyday living. This book of poems is the result of the authors personal conversation with God. What is God's will for my life? Why am I on the outside looking in? Does the word of God really work? Do his blessings also apply to me? While peeking through a circle of her thumb and index finger, Sandra Penro declared, "There has got to be a loop hole, a niche, a happy medium for me." "The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of his law. " Deuteronomy 29:29 After God revealed this scripture to her, it changed her life. She realized that we do matter to God. He does want us to be happy. He does have a plan for our lives, and you should never give up on a dream: even if it's a childhood dream of writing poetry.

Rumi’s joyous, ecstatic love poems; St. Francis’s loving observations of nature through the eyes of Catholicism; Kabir’s wild, freeing humor that synthesizes Hindu, Muslim, and Christian beliefs; St. Teresa’s sensual verse; and the mystical, healing words of Sufi poet Hafiz—these along with inspiring works by Rabia, Meister Eckhart, St. Thomas Aquinas, Mira, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, and Tukaram are all “love poems by God” from writers considered “conduits of the divine.” Together, they form a spiritual treasure to cherish always.

In an era of pandemic lockdown and brutal politics, these poems make vital space for what must come next—the return of wonder and free movement, and a profound sense of connection to what matters most. From a microscopic cell to flightless birds, to a sumo wrestler and the tree of life, Doshi interrupts the news cycle to pause in grief or delight, to restore power to language. A God at the Doorinvites the reader on a pilgrimage—one that leads us back to the sacred temple of ourselves. This is an exquisite, generous collection from a poet at the peak of her powers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "My Personal Journey With Jesus Revealed Through Poetry" includes my personal testimony along with poems I have written since 1999. My personal testimony is about how Jesus walked with me and carried me through the trials and tribulations of the past seventeen years. This includes my salvation experience, my personal encounters with Satan, my time spent in mental hospitals, two times when I could have died, the loss of family and friends, and also how God provided me with a new Christian family and friends who are helping me rebuild my life and showing me how to minister to others. The three sections of poems include personal journey poems, praise and worship poems, and poems about the end times. The reason I am telling my story and being so open and honest is because I want you to know that Jesus is real and that He will save you and walk with you for eternity if you only open up your heart to Him. My name is Brian Whitacre. I was born in 1973. As a child I enjoyed school and played sports, however I didn't know Jesus. My spiritual journey started in 1993. At the age of twenty I began attending a Pentecostal Church where I was drawn to Jesus by the power of love. On April 24, 1994, I got saved as God spoke these words to me "are you willing to give up your secular music for me?" I said yes and God also delivered me from my bad temper and cursing. However, right after I got saved, I came face to face with Satan. This encounter changed the course of my life forever. Because of this encounter I ended up in a maximum security mental hospital in Dayton, Ohio. Since 1994 I have spent many long hours in mental hospitals where Jesus proved He would never leave me.

These poems are creative reminiscent accounts of her walk with Christ. Her poetic themes will keep your attention and have you begging for more. She shares her many spiritual encounters with God from childhood to adulthood. She shows that mourning a loved one can be hard, but there is redemptive qualities within fear-you will get through it. She encourages many to just hold on and believe and don't give up on your fight for an understanding of life. She lets us know we are not perfect. God loves us all; we could never do enough to earn his love. These poems teach hope, endurance, and acceptance of life. You must love yourself. She shares her tragic losses and her strength to rise again. She is not afraid to be real. Poems are reverent of a convincible spirit to teach that God is real. She sets a table for a final feast and invites her readers over for that acceptance supper. Therefore, sit down and ready yourselves for a calming, anxiety-chasing-away revelation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh, provocative look at the link between poetry and Christianity, both as it relates to the Bible itself as well as to Christian and religious life, by an accomplished scholar. The Bible is full of poems. In the Old Testament, there are the Psalms and the Song of Songs, the great exhortations and lamentations of the Prophets, and passages of poetry woven in throughout. In the New Testament, Jesus describes the kingdom of heaven with poetic epithets such as “a treasure hid in a field,” calling the Son of God “the true vine,” “the light of the world,” “the good shepherd,” and “the way, the truth, and the life.” The Gospels reverberate with allusions to the poetry of the Old Testament; the last book of all is Revelation, a visionary poem. The Bible, in other words, asks to be read poetically from start to end, and yet readers have rarely considered what that might mean, much less heeded that call. In The Bible and Poetry, the poet and scholar Michael Edwards reshapes our understanding of the Bible and religious belief, arguing that poetry is not an ornamental or accidental feature but is central to both. He speaks personally of his early, unanticipated, transformative encounters with scripture. He offers close, insightful, and resonant readings of biblical passages. Poetry, as he sees it, is the vital and necessary medium of the Creator’s word, and the truth of the Bible is not a question of precepts and propositions but of a direct experience of its poetry, its power.

Book excerpt: God Has a Name is a simple yet profound guide to understanding God in a new light--focusing on what God says about himself. This one shift has the potential to radically alter how you relate to God, not as a doctrine, but as a relational being who responds to you in an elastic, back-and-forth way. In God Has a Name, John Mark Comer takes you line by line through Exodus 34:6-8--Yahweh's self-revelation on Mount Sinai, one of the most quoted passages in the Bible. Along the way, Comer addresses some of the most profound questions he came across as he studied these noted lines in Exodus, including: Why do we feel this gap between us and God? Could it be that a lot of what we think about God is wrong? Not all wrong, but wrong enough to mess up how we relate to him? What if our "God" is really a projection of our own identity, ideas, and desires? What if the real God is different, but far better than we could ever imagine? No matter where you are in your spiritual journey, the act of learning who God is just might surprise you--and change everything.
