Book excerpt: What a gift to all grandchildren in this heartfelt collection of poems by Judie Rae. The book chronicles the chain of connection between Judie's memories of her own solidly loving grandmother and her experiences as a grandmother on the other side of the equation. My favorite poem is the rueful "Lies We Tell Children" where "I'll always be here for you" from Grandma is received with a grain of salt by a world-weary five-year-old. I love the challenge of the powerful ending: What fractured beauty, this/child of my child, this/sprite, who hops, / skips a half skip, /slides her hand/ in my hand/and dares me/to cross over. Gail Entrekin, Editor of Canary Online Literary Magazine, and author of Rearrangement of the Invisible Through the poems in this collection, Judie Rae conveys the unique magic that can exist between grandmother and grandchild, reminding us that the lessons of love are learned by example, early in life. Her poems include memories of the intimate landscapes of her Canadian childhood at her grandmother's cottage near the Ottawa River. Looking back, Judie wonders whether her grandmother knew how much she loved her, and having read the tender poems, the reader murmurs, "yes, she knew..." Years later, as a grandmother herself, several of Judie's poems report her grandchildren's language in hilarious detail: Go potty 'morrow night... Another weaves past and present: I pat her back/to soothe/this child of my child, /as my grandmother/patted me, /her wrinkled hands, so mild, /now mine/breeching time... Ellen Dooling Reynard, author of No Batteries Required and Double Stream The image that continues to return to me after reading this beautiful and moving book of poems is that of Judie Rae's grandmother's hands, which could "lift a naked bird-all beak and veins-back to fragile nest." Poems about her grandmother rightfully begin Family Matters, as the woman's love for the little girl who has been entrusted to her care is a saving grace, a gift. Each of these well-crafted poems, those about Rae's children and her grandchildren as well, hold love lessons couched not in rules but revealed through compelling images and sensory details. Some of the poems had me laughing aloud, while others "warmed (my) eyes with tears," to recall another of the author's simple and lovely images. Judy Bebelaar, author of And Then They Were Gone: Teenagers of Peoples Temple from High School to Jonestown, and Walking Across the Pacific

Book excerpt: These intimate stories of South Indian immigrants and the families they left behind center women’s lives and ask how women both claim and surrender power—a stunning debut collection from an O. Henry Prize winner Traveling from Pittsburgh to Eastern Washington to Tamil Nadu, these stories about dislocation and dissonance see immigrants and their families confront the costs of leaving and staying, identifying sublime symmetries in lives growing apart. In “Malliga Homes,” selected by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie for an O. Henry Prize, a widow in a retirement community glimpses her future while waiting for her daughter to visit from America. In "No. 16 Model House Road," a woman long subordinate to her husband makes a choice of her own after she inherits a house. In "Nature Exchange," a mother grieving in the wake of a school shooting finds an unusual obsession. In "A Life in America," a professor finds himself accused of having exploited his graduate students. Sindya Bhanoo’s haunting stories show us how immigrants’ paths, and the paths of those they leave behind, are never simple. Bhanoo takes us along on their complicated journeys where regret, hope, and triumph appear in disguise.

Book excerpt: An astonishing collection about interconnectedness—between the human and nonhuman, ancestors and ourselves—from National Book Critics Circle Award winner and National Book Award finalist Ada Limón. “I have always been too sensitive, a weeper / from a long line of weepers,” writes Limón. “I am the hurting kind.” What does it mean to be the hurting kind? To be sensitive not only to the world’s pain and joys, but to the meanings that bend in the scrim between the natural world and the human world? To divine the relationships between us all? To perceive ourselves in other beings—and to know that those beings are resolutely their own, that they “do not / care to be seen as symbols”? With Limón’s remarkable ability to trace thought, The Hurting Kind explores those questions—incorporating others’ stories and ways of knowing, making surprising turns, and always reaching a place of startling insight. These poems slip through the seasons, teeming with horses and kingfishers and the gleaming eyes of fish. And they honor parents, stepparents, and grandparents: the sacrifices made, the separate lives lived, the tendernesses extended to a hurting child; the abundance, in retrospect, of having two families. Along the way, we glimpse loss. There are flashes of the pandemic, ghosts whose presence manifests in unexpected memories and the mysterious behavior of pets left behind. But The Hurting Kind is filled, above all, with connection and the delight of being in the world. “Slippery and waddle thieving my tomatoes still / green in the morning’s shade,” writes Limón of a groundhog in her garden, “she is doing what she can to survive.”

"The poems in Sunni Wilkinson's THE MARRIAGE OF THE MOON AND THE FIELD show us history, affection, private struggle, and the common life with a kind of grave, irony-tinged happiness that is rare in the poetry of our time. Her poems turn away from complaint, as though she had set out to reveal instead the domestic life of intelligence in all its color, warmth, and depth. This is a very fine debut volume, worth treasuring; and more are sure to follow."Christopher Howell "There is much of wonder in a first book of poems: a new voice, a freshness, other ways of being and believing. And so it is with Sunni Brown Wilkinson's THE MARRIAGE OF THE MOON AND THE FIELD. There are marvelous poems here, poems that range through the world: Vienna, Juarez, Andalusia, Mozambique, Venice. The poet tells us 'I've looked into the world and found / my own life reassembled and given back to me / with broken glass and a birdsong.' There are poems of family (parents, children, grandparents), our primal world, and there are poems of immigrants, asylum seekers, the displaced. And weaving through all of them there is a sweet charity, a belief in grace, and a tenderness toward existence. There is as well a recognition that tragedy and loss make up a part of our lives, but in Wilkinson's vision these can be redeemed since 'we're verses with a space in between / for our own small hallelujah.' These are poems that 'you can ride...into tomorrow.' Sunni Wilkinson is a welcome new poet for our times."Joseph Stroud "Sunni Brown Wilkinson's poems sustain a compelling tension between the macro and micro worlds. Scientific facts of the physical realm collide with intimate interiorities. She turns a steely eye and a tender heart toward the experience of living fully in the rush of the NOW and the flickering echoes of what came before. These are lushly rendered poems to savor and/or to devour."Nance Van Winckel

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: hared memories bind families and friends together. Not least important among these are memories of stories, songs, and poems, repeated often and incorporated into everyday thought and expression. The child who grows up unaware of literature of the past is surely impoverished. To fill this vacuum with the deluge of current song lyrics and drama from television and movies is scarcely a satisfactory solution. We heard many of the poems assembled here from our mothers, and have often read or recited most of these to our children. The volumes from which they came are falling apart and long since out of print, or too bulky for convenient handling. Thus we saw the need for a compact selection. Although from a variety of scattered sources, we leaned heavily on a collection that appeared, early in the 20th century, in the magazine Normal Instructor Primary Plans subsequently published as Poems Teachers Ask For by F. A. Owen Publishing Company, of Danville, N.Y. Many of the poems, such as the Mother Goose rhymes, are no longer attributable to individuals, and are heard in different versions. Where authors are known, we have given the name and have adhered to original words, spelling, and punctuation. In the very few instances in which wording has been changed, an asterisk has been placed by the authors name and the changes noted at the end of the book. Since the collection was first assembled, our own grandchildren have become the readers, rather than the read-to. Yet, to our knowledge, no substantial body of new poetry has come along to take the place of these traditional works that range from light fancy to the joys and perils of growing up and the heroism of those who came before us. Thus these out of date poems may be even more important to the children of the 21st century than to those for whom they were originally compiled. This small collection ranges from familiar nursery rhymes to somber works on the struggles and valor of our forebearers. It is our hope that these poems may bring mirth, joy, and an appreciation of our heritage to new generations of children and to their parents and grandparents
