Book excerpt: THREE VERY SPECIAL MEHER BABA PLACES Poona: The City of God, Meherazad & Seclusion Hill, Meherabad & The Tomb Poems & Photographs... Paul Smith Poet/Translator Paul Smith became a devotee of Meher Baba in 1965 and visted India in 1969 and went on pilgrimage there many times and composed free-form & rhyming poems on his experiences at very special places connected with Meher Baba, the Perfect Spiritual Master Who declared Himself, Avatar of the Age. In 1985 the author began to feel the need (usually on the site, or shortly afterwards) to put pen to paper and express in free-form, internally-rhyming poetry... a kind of descriptive inner and outer guide to each 'Baba place' in Meher Baba's birth-place of Poona (Pune), as he was experiencing it... a 'feeling' of the presence of the Master from the past that was still available... and, (having gone back often to many of the places and discovered this)... the future. He began to take black & white photographs of all the places at the same time, sometimes even in the middle of writing the poem. Interestingly, often when he read these poems to others they inspired them to visit Poona, Meherazad & Seclusion Hill and Meherabad and Meher Baba's Tomb/Shrine and see and experience the 'vibe' or 'feeling' of the presence of Avatar Meher Baba that remains there. Book excerpt: THE VIRUS & THE WORD: The Breaking of the Silence of Meher Baba. Poems by Paul Smith & Quotes of Meher Baba. From July 10, 1925 until shortly before his dropping the physical form in 1969, the Perfect Spiritual Master, Meher Baba, was silent. He communicated first by using an alphabet board, and later by unique hand gestures that were interpreted and spoken out by one of his mandali, usually by his close disciple Eruch Jessawala. Meher Baba said that his silence was not undertaken as a spiritual exercise but solely in connection with his inner universal work. 'Man's inability to live God's words makes the Avatar's teaching a mockery. Instead of practicing the compassion he taught, man has waged wars in his name. Instead of living the humility, purity, and truth of his words, man has given way to hatred, greed, and violence. Because man has been deaf to the principles and precepts laid down by God in the past, in this present Avataric form, I observe silence.' He declared that he would 'break his silence' with the one Word of words that would be heard by all and begin the New Humanity on earth after a world-wide catastrophe. Here are free-form poems and ghazals by Paul Smith over 50 years about Meher Baba's Silence and the Word, along with quotes by Meher Baba and his closest disciples on his Silence and the Word that was promised to be spoken. Large Format Paperback 7" x 1o". Pages 330. The Word & the Breaking of the Silence of Meher Baba by Paul Smith. From July 10, 1925 until shortly before his passing in 1969, The Perfect Spiritual Master, Avatar Meher Baba, was silent. He declared that he would 'break his silence' with the Word of words that would be heard by all and begin a New Humanity on earth. On July 31st, 1953, in Dehra Dun, Meher Baba stated: "I feel that a lot of ups and downs will be experienced in the world; tremendous upheavals will take place, and many parts of the world will be affected. This will be from natural and unnatural causes and will happen as a result of something small." Here are free-form poems and ghazals by Paul Smith for over 50 years about Meher Baba's Silence and the Word, along with quotes by Avatar Meher Baba and his closest disciples on his Silence and the Divine Word. Meher BabaPaintings & Drawings, Poems & Essays by Oswald HallEdited & Introduction by Paul SmithOswald Hall (1917-1991) Oswald Hall was one of the first, if not the first seeker of God to recognize Meher Baba as a Perfect Master and later as the Avatar in Australia. Oswald Hall was a dynamic person who lifted you up with his love and enthusiasm for life and art and poetry and... everything. He seemed to have some knowledge about most things and his description of Meher Baba when Baba came to his house in Eltham in 1956 was the nail that finally hit the head of any doubt I may have had about Baba at that time. For the following twenty years over many late night drinks and smokes we discussed and argued about almost every subject in the universe, but mainly about Baba and the great Sufi poets, wine and painting and culture and our own poetry and writing and his wonderful paintings that filled his house, mainly of Meher Baba (many of these are lost to us today). In his essay on Oswald's paintings Christopher Heathcote states "the pen and ink drawings Hall produced in the period 1944-46 (pages 34-42)... are undoubtedly the most important early Australian surrealist drawings that have come to light in recent years." In my opinion his later paintings related to Meher Baba were of equal importance. His poetry is sometimes quite obscure but is always fascinating and spiritually surrealist as are his paintings... his masterpieces 'The Brood in Exile', 'Intimations of Song' 'The Royal Verge' and many others must be among some of the most important Australian poetry composed in the mid-twentieth century. His essay on Art... 'The Source of Style' and on Meher Baba 'The Bridge to the Master' are more relevant today than they were when they we written around forty years ago. Oswald Hall was an original and his life and works are still with us today in the memories of all who knew him and now in this book for others to know his ideas and inspirations. Paul Smith, from the Introduction. Full Colour. 8" X 10" (21 cm X 30 cm). 337 pages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of a Text offers a vivid portrait of one community's interaction with its favorite text—the epic Ramcaritmanas—and the way in which performances of the epic function as a flexible and evolving medium for cultural expression. Anthropologists, historians of religion, and readers interested in the culture of North India and the performance arts will find breadth of subject, careful scholarship, and engaging presentation in this unique and beautifully illustrated examination of Hindi culture. The most popular and influential text of Hindi-speaking North India, the epic Ramcaritmanas is a sixteenth century retelling of the Ramayana story by the poet Tulsidas. This masterpiece of pre-modern Hindi literature has always reached its largely illiterate audiences primarily through oral performance including ceremonial recitation, folksinging, oral exegesis, and theatrical representation. Drawing on fieldwork in Banaras, Lutgendorf breaks new ground by capturing the range of performance techniques in vivid detail and tracing the impact of the epic in its contemporary cultural context.

Book excerpt: Sometimes illumination occurs spontaneously or, as Ram Dass experienced, in a heart-wrenching moment of opening. More commonly, it happens when we polish the mirror of the heart with daily practice—and see beyond the illusion of our transient thoughts and emotions to the vast and luminous landscape of our true nature. For five decades, Ram Dass has explored the depths of consciousness and love and brought them to life as service to others. With Polishing the Mirror, he gathers together his essential teachings for living in the eternal present, here and now. Readers will find within these pages a rich combination of perennial wisdom, humor, teaching stories, and detailed guidance on Ram Dass' own spiritual practices, including: Bhakti Yoga—opening our hearts to unconditional lovePractices for living, aging, dying, and embracing the natural flow of lifeKarma Yoga—how selfless service can profoundly transform usWorking with fear and suffering as a path to grace and freedomStep-by-step guidance in devotional chant, meditation and mantra practice, and much more For those new to Ram Dass' teachings, and for those to whom they are old friends, here is this vanguard spiritual explorer's complete guide to discovering who we are and why we are here, and how to become beacons of unconditional love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on insights from theoretical engagements with borders and subalternity, Beyond Religion in India and Pakistan suggests new frameworks for understanding religious boundaries in South Asia. It looks at the ways in which social categories and structures constitute the bordering logics inherent within enactments of these boundaries, and positions hegemony and resistance through popular religion as an important indication of wider developments of political and social change. The book also shows how borders are continually being maintained through violence at national, community and individual levels. By exploring selected sites and expressions of piety including shrines, texts, practices and movements, Virinder S. Kalra and Navtej K. Purewal argue that the popular religion of Punjab should neither be limited to a polarised picture between formal, institutional religion, nor the 'enchanted universe' of rituals, saints, shrines and village deities. Instead, the book presents a picture of 'religion' as a realm of movement, mobilization, resistance and power in which gender and caste are connate of what comes to be known as 'religious'. Through extensive ethnographic research, the authors explore the reality of the complex, dynamic and contested relations that characterize everyday material and religious lives on the ground. Ultimately, the book highlights how popular religion challenges the borders and boundaries of religious and communal categories, nationalism and theological frameworks while simultaneously reflecting gender/caste society.
