Book excerpt: Sacred poetry from twelve mystics and saints, rendered brilliantly by Daniel Ladinsky, beloved interpreter of verses by the fourteenth-century Persian poet Hafiz One of 6 Books Oprah Loves to Give as Gifts During the Holidays “All kinds of beautiful poetry.” –Hoda Kotb In this luminous collection, Daniel Ladinsky—best known for his bestselling interpretations of the great Sufi poet Hafiz—brings together the timeless work of twelve of the world’s finest spiritual writers, six from the East and six from the West. Once again, Ladinsky reveals his talent for creating profound and playful renditions of classic poems for a modern audience. Rumi’s joyous, ecstatic love poems; St. Francis’s loving observations of nature through the eyes of Catholicism; Kabir’s wild, freeing humor that synthesizes Hindu, Muslim, and Christian beliefs; St. Teresa’s sensual verse; and the mystical, healing words of Sufi poet Hafiz—these along with inspiring works by Rabia, Meister Eckhart, St. Thomas Aquinas, Mira, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, and Tukaram are all “love poems by God” from writers considered “conduits of the divine.” Together, they form a spiritual treasure to cherish always.

Book excerpt: Poetry is exciting, but elusive to most. This is troublesome for Christians because the Bible, John Poch reminds us, is largely composed of poetical verse. In God's Poems, Poch re-introduces sacred text as purposefully poetic, and explains what that means and invites the reader to with this insight live more thoughtfully and beautifully. But that is not all. Poch as a well-established and regarded poet, turns his eye to contemporary poetry and vindicates its function in a "created and creative world." Today many have abandoned the genre as a wasteland of misguided voice that really has nothing to say. The poet is a truth-teller, and Poch as devoted writer, teacher, and believer sends out a renewed call to turn to verse as a means of seeing oneself as God's poeima, or poem (Letter to Ephesians). The depth of self-knowing relates directly to an aptitude to engage the category of poetry at some level. A tragic void is filled with Poch's effort to exhort the reader to patiently reconnect with poetry even though it has been hijacked by persons who want to be heard more than speak well. (This book is essential, therefore, for aspiring poets.) For faithful readers or those seeking to return, Poch is a place to begin to understand contemporary writers worth knowing and which poets of the past must remain with us. In Virgilian fashion, he can see the panorama behind him and that which lies immediately ahead and instills a recovered love of an eternal medium that will be restored to a state of coherency and enlightened perspective. If Poch has faith in poetry it is because poetry is indeed a source of faith. If Justin Martyr claimed that everything that is true belongs to Christians, Poch shows us that everyone who speaks truth is to some degree a poet. Even God with his revealed wisdom chooses poetry as medium par excellence. It is essential to know how poetry works. "Great poems that we consider literature give us what we never expected. They go beyond the usefulness of conveying a feeling and unveiling beauty; and they tell us who we are."

These are declarative poems, faithfully proclaiming the gospel story in all its liberative power. Here the gospel is the "fresh words / that speak of / things impossible." This powerful poetry helps us hear the hum of deliverance—against all hope—that's been in the gospel all along.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I woke up one morning and something within me said "write." I ignored it at first because I had recently finished writing a curriculum on Children Bible Stories for the church's Vacation Bible School and Sunday School ministries. But the feeling lingered. I couldn't get rid of it. There was something within that urged me to write. I got a sheet of paper and picked up a pen. My hand began to glide effortlessly across the paper as if some unforeseen person was doing the writing for me. I wasn't thinking of words to say, just writing them. God was using my hand, pen and paper to convey His poetic message to the world. I told everyone that I do not write poetry unless it's on a small scale (teaching children how to) but God chose me to get messages out to the people thru poems. He is the author and finisher of these works and we must give Him the praise. I just thank Him for choosing me to help spread His Gospel through poetry. Mary (Brooks) King was born in Wilkerson, WV to Elder Robert C. Brooks and Mother Louise Brooks in 1937. She grew up in Charleston, WV. She studied at West Virginia State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. Further scholastic opportunities led her to Baruch College in NYC, Jersey City State College in Jersey City, NJ and Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. Mary King is a three time recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award, one of which was received from Princeton University for the District of Hudson County. Shortly before retirement in 2007, Mary implemented the IBO (International Baccalaureate Organization) curriculum for Demarest and Connors Middle Schools in Hoboken, NJ and was promoted to sixth grade Middle School head teacher, responsible for training and supervising six other established instructors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With every great writer, there came an initial spark of inspiration. Often, this spark ignites a fire that has the potential of being a raging inferno. Such was the case of this book, From Glory to Glory, which took nearly four decades to write and compile. The initial spark came in 1967 and did not turn into a blazing fire until the year 2000. By then, the author realized that writing was a God-given talent and was a calling in his life. It was then that he fully embraced that truth. Listening to the still voice that was in him, Ken was led by the Holy Spirit to focus on writing poems that were inspired by God. He wanted to captivate the reader with poems that had meaning and purpose-ones that would lead people to the truth, and then the truth would set them free. The secret that Ken discovered was if you give God the glory, then everything turns out right because you have gained His favor. And after God's favor, come His blessings. Truth and transparency have been two important traits of Ken's DNA. He doesn't feel he has accomplished what he has set out to do until you have captured his essence. This is key. So many times we see people who deceive others by being untruthful and by walking in the shadows. Ken seeks to change that. He believes that the truth is the light. Chosen by God to spread His message of agape (godly and unconditional) love in the simplest and most direct way, Ken seeks to make a difference in this world by touching one person at a time. As you read this book, may you not only extract the message of each poem, but may you also feel his heartbeat for all mankind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God’s Agenda - Religious Poems: Vol 1 By Richard I. Gold God’s Agenda - Religious Poems contains a number of poems about God, Jesus Christ, our relationship with God, and our relationship with our fellow men, all in accordance with the Bible. At several points, two or more poems have the same title, but they were kept in because they are different poems. In other cases, several poems may appear to be somewhat similar; however, the focus is slightly different. Sometimes, a poem may require several readings to get the full meaning. At times, the meaning may be more than the author put into them and the reader may find some ideas which will benefit him or her. In all cases, the meaning of the poem should be taken to help build our faith and hope for the future, both in this life and when we have crossed to the other side. Remember, if we have a loved one who has passed on and is in the next life, they are in a better and more fulfilling place. It is well that we mourn for them, but this should be for our lack of seeing them, not for the fate of the loved one.

So I put pen to paper and immediately He gave me the poem "Set Free!" Since that day, God has given me new poems to write every day, which is totally amazing because before He spoke to me, I was not a poet. It's my deepest desire to share His words of comfort and encouragement with others. If you've ever wondered what's in God's heart, this book is for you.

John Piper shares a tale of what might have been through the story-poem of an innkeeper whose life was forever altered by the arrival of the Son of God. Ponder the sacrifice that was made that night. Celebrate Jesus's birth and the power of his resurrection. And encounter the hope his life gives you for today—and for eternity. This imaginative story has been redesigned and makes a great gift for families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poems to the Child-God is the first full-length study in English of the verse of Surdas, or Sur, traditionally ranked among the three greatest poets writing in Hindi. Combining introduction, critical study, and annotated translation in a single volume, this work introduces the general reader to a major sixteenth-century mystic poet, best known for his lyrics in praise of the child-god Krsna (Krishna), and proposes, to both specialists and general readers, a way of reading Sur's verse significantly different from that found in traditional critical approaches. A general introduction provides an overview of the poet’s life and time, the religious and literary milieu that informed his work, and the mythology associated with his chosen deity, Krsna. Part 1 looks closely at individual verses from the Sursagar, examining the ways in which the poet manipulates the structures of language, poetic convention, and mythology to develop a theme central to the literature of Krsna-worship: the irony of incarnation. It is, Bryant argues, the irony of a child who never stops growing, beyond manhood and into godhood, seldom glimpsing the still more awesome truth: that he is and has always been the source and substance of the universe. Part 2 presents an anthology of Sur’s verse in English translation. The poems have been arranged to portray the Krsna tale as Sur understood it. Sectional introductions provide the reader with the classical outlines of the tale and point out where the poet made alterations or embellishments of his own. A set of notes on the translations, and a glossary of potentially unfamiliar terms and characters, further assist the Western reader in approaching the work of a major figure in the religious and literary history of India. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. Book excerpt: The poetry of L. H. Swiger covers many areas of life. Some are about the love of nature, some about the love of family (both of parents and children), some are patriotic, and some are about love itself. Many of them are doctrinal (or about God and the way of Salvation or Biblical Victorious Lives). Brother Swiger was greatly inspired as he wrote about the death of his little nephew in “The Angels Picked Jesus A Birthday Bouquet”; or “Victorious Victims” (following the Oklahoma City bombing); or as he wrote the one titled “Tell Your Daddy Too.” Although not all were about personal events in his life, still he was often deeply motivated by a particular event that he was familiar with. This collection includes an essay about his first pastorate and the love of a place called Brushy Run, West Virginia. He has included in this volume a Christian family love poem (that tells a story) in “Just One.” He also has listed about thirty maxims in this book. Brother L. H. Swiger has written approximately 580 Christian poems thus far (of these he has selected approximately seventy-seven for this book). He was born in the country, raised in the country, and has a deep lasting love of nature and family, which reflects in his poetry. He doesn’t profess to be a great poet, but he is anxious to share with others what God has given him, in poetry. It is his sincere desire that you will be touched by and enjoy this edition of “Heartfelt Poetry.” God Bless!
