Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxford Lectures on Poetry The words Poetry for poetry's sake' recall the famous phrase 'art for Art.' It is far from my purpose to examine the possible meanings of that phrase, or all the questions it involves. I propose to state briefly what I understand by Poetry for poetry's sake, ' and then, after guarding against one or two misapprehensions of the formula, to consider more fully a single problem connected with it. And I must premise, without attempting to justify them, certain explanations. We are to consider poetry in its essence, and apart from the flaws which in most poems accompany their poetry. We are to include in the_idea of poetry the metrical form, and not to regard this as a mere accident or a mere vehicle. And, finally, poetry being poems, we are to think of a poem as it actually exists; and, without aiming here at accuracy, we may say that an actual poem is the succession of experiences - sounds, images, thoughts, emotions - through which we pass when we are reading as poetically as we can.1 Of course this imaginative experience - if I may use the phrase for brevity - differs with every reader and every time of reading: a poem exists in innumerable degrees. But that insurmountable fact lies in the nature of things and does not concern us now. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. And Poems There is no royal road in life To freedom of the mind; No royal road to wealth of thought One path for all mankind. Man's highest good no more conserved By myths, though honored in their day, now simply asks for reason's light To guide and point the way. Our pathway here on every side Is hedged with cares and tears One constant struggle to be free From darkness, doubt and fears. No light but that Of reason comes, Man's pathway to illume; The day-star of his hope to be From the cradle to the tomb. The cry of faith by priests of old Grows feebler in our day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Poetry: Delivered at Oxford I apprehend that the University, though she exacts nothing of the kind, in some degree expects that those whom she has honoured with her Professorships should give what they have to give sooner or later to the world. Such being the case, I need advance no other reason for publishing these Lectures. The lectures which I have delivered in my time are of course more in number than those contained in this volume, but owing to a variety of accidents my manuscripts fell into confusion, and have many of them gone astray. I am obliged, therefore, to content myself with what comes readiest to my hand. Of the Lectures that are missing I rather regret some, particularly two on 'Jason and Medea' and one on the tragedy of 'Hamlet.' My examination of 'Hamlet' ought to have come in between what I say of 'Othello' and what I say of 'Macbeth, ' and its absence leaves rather a disastrous gap in the Shakspere series. Download or read book Lectures on Classical Subjects (Classic Reprint) written by W. R. Hardie and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Classical Subjects I Have called this book 'Lectures, ' partly because a simple title of this kind would have been natural to the Greeks and Romans, partly because I could not devise one which would describe it more exactly. An old Oxford rhyme has been in my mind: 'Do not to many lectures go, For whether you do so or no, You'll find the substance of his notes Much better in the books he quotes' - 'much better, ' no doubt, intrinsically, but often scattered, and not very accessible, and sometimes too controversial and complicated to be of use to the student. The Professional Scholar will not find much, if anything, that is new to him in this volume. It is not to him that it is addressed: 'Persium non curo legere, Laelium Decumum volo.' This D. Laelius, Cicero says, was 'vir bonus et non inlitteratus, sed nihil ad Persium.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Lectures Introductory to the Study of Poetry We may presume that by his first epithet Milton intended that simplicity which is another name for sincerity. 'He meant that a poet must look at the world frankly and with open eyes; with the spirit, though with more than the wisdom, of a child.) We sometimes express another side of the same truth by saying that poetry is "universal," meaning that it cares nothing for superficial and transient fashions, but is interested only "in man, in nature, and in human life," in their permanent elements. This first epithet seems to fix beyond dispute an indispensable quality of all poetry. If a writer is insincere, or if he is conventional and fashionable, we are sure, whatever his airs and graces, that he is no poet. By "sensuous" it is probable that Milton meant what, in more technical language, we should describe as "concrete." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Original Poems and Spicy Lectures I know you all to be honorable men and women, and I trust that you may remember that dishonor would be a seal upon the tomb of Hope, by which, like some lost, sorrowing angel, sad memory would dwell evermore. Some of you have money to spare, some have beautiful faces, and some have pretty feathers in their hats, and the sweet perfume which often floats upon the breeze, causes me to think that the Fox is chasing a Musk - Rat through a field of new-mown hay. Download or read book English Poets and the National Ideal written by Ernest De Selincourt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Poets and the National Ideal: Four Lectures The four lectures which comprise this volume were delivered during the winter before a familiar audience. They make no pretension to scholarship, and were not written with a view to publication. But in the present crisis the humblest citizen is anxious to contribute, as best he can, to the service of his country; and the student of English literature can perhaps do no better than help to set in circulation those ideas and emotions which have stirred our greatest poets in periods of national stress, and made them the mouthpiece of the finest spirit of their times. What they wrote, each for his own age, has lost little of its value; for much as we need to-day all the physical and material strength that we can command, we need still 'more ideas and inspiration and our patriotism will be both wiser and more devoted if we learn to draw upon the immense spiritual resources of our poetry, which are not the least glorious nor the least precious part of our heritage as Englishmen. It is in the hope that these lectures, despite their obvious limita tions, may awaken a few readers to a fuller sense of that heritage and all that it implies, that I have decided to publish them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Poetry The point of view maintained in the present volume was reached in the course of discussions with a class of students of English literature in Harvard University. Much of whatever value the ideas here presented may possess is due to the questions and criticisms offered by members of the class, and by a few friends to whom they have been submitted. The form in which they now appear is practically that in which they were delivered as lectures at the Lowell Institute in the spring of 1911. I have taken some pains to remove the more obvious traces of oral delivery, but I fear that it has not been possible to disguise altogether the didactic tone due to their academic origin.
