Book excerpt: For eight decades the Primer on the Rheumatic Diseases has been the standard text from which most medical students and house ofcers have learned rheumatology. I myself will never forget thumbing through an older edition of the Primer as a second-year resident, while waiting to review a perplexing patient with my tutor. Fortunately the tutor was r- ning late with his own patients, so I had time to fip through the book – then much thinner – a couple of times. While turning the pages, per- ing the features of those diseases whose names were still exotic to me, and considering my patient’s history of conductive hearing loss and p- monary nodules, a light went on when I stumbled eventually on a part- ular chapter. I still remember the jaw-dropping efect on my tutor of my announcement then that I had a patient with Wegener’s granulomatosis. I think I became a rheumatologist that very moment! Subsequent editions of the Primer have sufered from the inevitable “obesity creep,” making it an outstanding reference textbook but virtually impossible to fip through quickly while awaiting one’s tutor, and even more difcult to slip into the pocket of a white coat to carry on rounds. For this reason we have created the Pocket Primer, a mini version that cuts the larger book down to its essentials.

Book excerpt: Atlas of Rheumatoid Arthritis is a high-quality educational initiative, written by leaders in the field of rheumatology, containing a collection of approximately 150 relevant images, with extended descriptive captions and a comprehensive bibliography. The Atlas of Rheumatoid Arthritis will provide clinicians with a visual guide to rheumatoid arthritis, focusing on assessment, diagnosis and treatment, including newer research into the signalling pathways involved in the pathogenesis of RA, before focusing on the treatment of RA. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common and most serious of the inflammatory arthritic disorders, and it dominates clinical rheumatological practice. Effective, early treatment is vital as this can slow the course of the disease and reduce joint damage. RA is usually treated using disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs), most commonly methotrexate. The newest treatments target the disease-causing immune elements specifically and directly.

Book excerpt: This book provides the reader with a complete and concise introduction to rheumatic illness. While rheumatic disease often manifests itself in conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system, the authors stress that a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach is needed for diagnosis, to aid understanding of rheumatic disease with multisystem involvement. Rheumatology, A Color Handbook covers epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of each condition. Common forms of arthritis (including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout and others) are covered in addition to allied conditions including vasculitis, osteoporosis, lupus and other allied health conditions. The book is useful for recently qualified physicians/residents, general practitioners, medical students, and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with rheumatic disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a quick aid for any clinician dealing with patients with rheumatic diseases. The major gap that we tried to fill by writing this book is the clinical relevance to practice! It is hardly ever seen that a resident in rheumatology is carrying any book about rheumatology in his/her rotation! Obviously, because there are no good books with relevance to the daily practice a resident is facing! Now, here are the specific objectives of the book. The chapters might be fulfilling more than one of these general objectives: To construct a clinical approach to patients with arthritis. To interpret laboratory findings in patients with rheumatic diseases. To prescribe and monitor drugs used to treat patients with rheumatic diseases. To construct a diagnostic approach to common medical problems in patients with rheumatic diseases. To provide an update in the classification and management of common rheumatic diseases based on international societies. The features and content in the book that will be most valuable: The first part which represent the basics in rheumatology practice. There will be a comprehensive chapter about how to approach history taking from patients presenting with a rheumatological problem. There will be also a simplified approach to MSK examination of common joints from a rheumatological perspective with the intention to diagnose arthritis and not to be mixed with sports injuries or other soft tissue problems. In the last section of the book, we will bring the latest classification criteria and the latest recommendation for management guidelines (they are so many!) in one section! We are not considering our book as a reference in how to manage patients with RA or SLE by prescribing appropriate drugs! We are going only to focus on the approach to the patients and providing the latest guidelines for management available for the reader of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rheumatology: A clinical handbook is an essential resource for medical students who need an introduction, understanding and overview of the subject. Most competing texts either burden medical students with information they do not require, or cover rheumatology alongside orthopaedics and as a result compromise fundamentals of rheumatology. This book is different: It provides all the information students need during their rheumatology placement Further information resources are signposted for those who want to take their studies further A definition and brief pathophysiology for each condition is provided, which is linked to the respective clinical features. The book covers the core elements of diagnosis and treatment based on the latest national guidelines to swiftly bring students and junior doctors in training up-to-date. Self-assessment questions and an OSCE chapter provide a way of checking that users have understood and grasped the core material, as well as enabling students to be well equipped for their written and OSCE examinations. Written by two medical students and an experienced consultant rheumatologist, the book combines a reader-friendly writing style with coverage of the material through clinical experience of a professional in the field. Printed in full colour throughout, with an attractive design, a clear and concise writing style as well as a range of pedagogical features including an array of mnemonics, pictures and diagrams, Rheumatology: A clinical handbook is exactly the sort of book medical students and newly qualified doctors would benefit from.
