Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princess Pocahontas In truth, when I look over the whole world history, I can find no other child of thirteen, boy or girl, who wielded such a far-reaching influence over the future of a nation. But for the protection and aid which Pocahontas coaxed from Pow hatan for her English friends at Jamestown, the Colony would have perished from starvation or by the arrows of the hostile Indians. And the importance of this Colony to the future United States was so great that we owe to Pocahontas some what the same gratitude, though in a lesser degree, that France owes to her Joan of Arc. Pocahontas's greatest service to the colonists lay not in the saving of Captain Smith's life, but in her continued succour to the starving settlement. Indeed, there are historians who have claimed that the story of her rescue of Smith is an invention without foundation. But in opposition to this view let me quote from The 'american Nation: A History. Lyon Gardiner Tyler, author of the volume England in America says. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pocahontas: And Other Poems Some of the poems in this volume have never before been published. Others have appeared in America, but are supposed to be equally new here. Should it be inquired why they are presented to the public in an age not eminently poetical. Or why they are offered at all in a country whose literary resources are so rich and abundant, the Author has little to say. Possibly, the kindness and hospitality which have every where greeted her may have emboldened her too far, if so, she hopes to be forgiven; - and may the wild flowers, from the clefts of the rock and the far western forests, which she thus leaves trembling in a foreign clime, never forget to breathe the fragrance of a stranger's gratitude. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pocahontas, the Virginia Nonpareil: A Drama The several attempts to effect an English settlement upon the continent of America, prior to 1607, met with failure and disaster. In 1584, Sir Walter Raleigh coasted the Carolinas and took formal possession of the country, naming it "Virginia," in honor of Elizabeth, England's glorious maiden Queen. This venture was simply one of exploration. A year later, Raleigh promoted a colony of one hundred and eight, which, under Sir Ralph Lane, made settlement on the island of Roanoke. This colony was abandoned in the following year, the majority of its members returning to England. Fifty of the party, left in charge of the settlement, were utterly annihilated by the savages. This event, together with the reports spread broadcast in England by the returned adventurers, were not calculated to encourage further attempts at colonization. Among the archives of the British Government is a letter from one of these Roanoke colonists to a friend at home, which sets forth, in substance, among other things, this discouraging piece of information: "This frightful wilderness must surely be the death of all of us, for never could a Christian hope to live in such a land of abominations. The greatest summer heat at home is but the mildness of spring to what we suffer here. We are, for the most time, stricken with vicious fevers, and rest at night is impossible, owing to the swarms of winged and stinging insects, that suck one's blood. Besides these plagues, legions of painted heathens perform their devilish dances round about, and threaten us with their weapons." It is scarcely to be wondered, that people living under such circumstances should wish to return to their homes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from By-Ways of Virginia History: A Jamestown Memorial, Embracing a Sketch of Pocahontas The story of Virginia told in the details of her records lies undiscovered by the student who has not access to out-of-date volumes, family and county court papers, which teem with pathetic and humorous incident, as well as occurrences of strictly historical import. Couched in the quaint language of the day, these unfamiliar notes contain environing circumstances, the cause and effect, of events with which general history deals, including names which have passed from all remembrance. Interesting in themselves as embodying the thought and action of earlier times they testify to the heroic efforts made to establish a government on just principles and a permanent basis under disadvantageous circumstances. If many of them have been repeated in writings which once won attention and continue to bear the stamp of authority, they are now little known, because the volumes are laid aside and the subjects are crowded out of histories treating of later interests. The fragments, gleamed from works, not in general circulation and collected together here, are presented as sidelights of history rather than its philosophy and no attempt is made to follow connectedly the course of events, the relation of which has become the oft-told tale of what transpired in the Colony known to her people as the Old Dominion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pocahontas, a Legend: With Historical and Traditionary Notes Few subjects belong more peculiarly to the province of Poetry than the events connected with the Aborigines of our country. They were altogether a poetic race. Their deeds of heroic daring, their uncomplaining endurance of physical suffering, affecting instances of patriotic devotion, scenes of domestic loveliness, and personal, um broken friendships, - these, besides the varied and romantic scenery of their boundless domains, are fitting themes for the investments of the poet's fancy, no less than for the records of the faithful historian. If the private friendship and the good will of those whose favor it is an honor to enjoy, can avail anything to support a difficult task with cheerfulness, the author is so cheered and supported in this publication.
