Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As demand for counselling from students across Higher Education (HE) increases year on year, counselling services are continually seeking to explore creative ways of working under the pressure that results from this rise in client numbers. One of the most frequent responses to increased demand is limiting the number of sessions that individual students may have. Until Short-term Counselling in Higher Education, there has been no text which provides a contextual, theoretical and practical input to this evolving way of working. This book explores constructive ways of providing very short-term counselling within a Higher Education context. Using case-studies, and employing up-to-date statistics from the sector, the book gives readers a clear understanding of the nature of the professional challenges, and offers ways of addressing these, including managing waiting lists, developing policies to facilitate timely intervention, and understanding the limitations of what short-term therapy can offer. Short-term Counselling in Higher Education explores the implications of working in Higher Education counselling services in this very short-term way, and as such it will be an essential resource for counsellors, heads of counselling services and student services managers in Higher Education, helping to find ways of delivering effective short-term interventions within existing counselling services.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special volume contains a selection of papers that were presented as part of the Seventh International Symposium on Natural and Man-Made Hazards (HAZARDS-98), held in Chania, Crete Island, Greece, during May 1998. The Symposium attracted broad international interest because many cases of natural disaster events, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, storm surges, forest fires, etc., that occurred in several parts of the world during the 1990s were presented not only for their physics but also from the point of view of their impact on society and their environmental consequences. Among these cases are the 1997 Red River Valley flood in Canada and the large earthquake of 18 November 1997, in Zakynthos, Greece. In addition, the volume contains contributions that apply advanced statistical methods and artificial intelligence techniques, such as GIS, and systems analysis to approach the description of physical processes, the discrimination of experimental data and the assessment and management of risk. Audience: This volume forms an excellent reference for scientists, students, engineers, the insurance industry, authorities specializing in public safety and natural hazards preparedness and mitigation plans.

Book excerpt: This report responds to a complaint arising from a survey relating to local National Health Service (NHS) services in Mr Hunter's constituency of Cheadle and carried out by Mr Hunter and funded from his Communications Allowance (CA). There were three elements to the complaint: that the survey contained material that should not have been included in a CA funded survey; that it should not have been circulated outside the constituency; and that publicity for the survey in a newsletter funded and circulated by his local party in one part of his constituency amounted to exploitation of the survey for party political purposes. The Committee agree with the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards that the survey included an incorrect imprint which suggested that it was party rather parliamentary in origin and that the CA should not have been used to distribute the survey outside Mr Hunter's constituency. They also agreed that, by themselves, the breaches were not so serious as to cause us to conclude that his survey should not have been funded from the CA

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mass imprisonment of over 110,000 people of Japanese ancestry during World War II was one of the most egregious violations of civil liberties in United States history. Removed from their homes on the temperate Pacific Coast, Japanese Americans spent the war years in desolate camps in the nation's interior. Photographers including Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange visually captured these camps in images that depicted the environment as a source of both hope and hardship. And yet the literature on incarceration has most often focused on the legal and citizenship statuses of the incarcerees, their political struggles with the US government, and their oral testimony. Nature Behind Barbed Wire shifts the focus to the environment. It explores how the landscape shaped the experiences of both Japanese Americans and federal officials who worked for the War Relocation Authority (WRA), the civilian agency that administered the camps. The complexities of the natural world both enhanced and constrained the WRA's power and provided Japanese Americans with opportunities to redefine the terms and conditions of their confinement. Even as the environment compounded their feelings of despair and outrage, the incarcerees also found that their agency in transforming and adapting to the natural world could help them survive and contest their incarceration. Japanese Americans and WRA officials negotiated the terms of confinement with each other and with a dynamic natural world. Ultimately, as Connie Chiang demonstrates, the Japanese American incarceration was fundamentally an environmental story.
