As there was a problem of communication a new language between the English troops and settlers and the native people came up that is nowadays called a Pidgin language. It was a mixture of the indigenous language and the language of the invaders from Europe. When later the British brought the first slaves from other colonies mostly in Africa they also had a huge impact on this Pidgin language. As the time went by more and more of these colonies declared their independence but most of the influences to the life and the country in the colonies seemed irreversible. A very important impact was the one on the language of the former natives by African slaves and European settlers that inhabited the colonies for a long time. These influences can still be seen in modern times in education, lifestyle and of course the language. The Pidgin languages all over the world – today most of them developed to creoles – are still spoken. They have some distinct features in common but they also show differences concerning grammatical or syntactical features even if the spelling seems to be nearly the same. Therefore in my opinion it is worthwhile taking a closer look to those similarities and differences between Pidgin and Creole languages all over the world and to pick out some appropriate examples that maybe do not share a continent, but instead share linguistic features derived from actions and happenings of a former time whose impacts are still seen today.

The author, a Jamaican linguist, meticulously examines distributional and interpretative properties of functional morphology in Jamaican Creole (JC) from a cartographic perspective (Cinque 1999, 2002; Rizzi 1997, 2004), thus exploring to what extent the grammar of JC provides morphological manifestations of an articulate IP, CP and DP. The data considered in this work offers new evidence in favour of these enriched structural analyses, and the instances where surface orders differ from the underlying functional skeleton are accounted for in terms of movement operations. This investigation of Jamaican syntax therefore allows us to conclude that the 'poor' inflectional morphology typical of Creole languages in general and of (basilectal) Jamaican Creole in particular does not correlate with poor structural architecture. Indeed the free morphemes discussed, as well as the word order considerations that indicate syntactic movement to designated projections, serve as arguments in favour of a rich underlying functional map.

It contributes to the study of Transatlantic relations between Africa and Jamaica, and in particular to the understanding of African influences in Jamaican linguistic practices. The book constitutes a first study of these phenomena from a cognitive-linguistic perspective and investigates traveling conceptualizations at the intersection of language, culture and cognition. The author explores Jamaican linguistic practices in different domains namely conceptualizations involving parts of the (human) body, conceptualizations of events, roles and relations underlying serial verb constructions, and conceptualizations of kinship and names. The study can be regarded as an innovative contribution as it looks not only at linguistic expressions on the surface but discusses the underlying cultural and cognitive basis of semantic structures. The study thus aims at making African-Jamaican connections on the conceptual level visible and also discusses notions of consciousness, agency and emblematicity.

Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on plural marking in the Afro-Hispanic creole language Palenquero spoken in Colombia, exploring linguistic and extra-linguistic variables in a broadly usage-based, variationist approach. Crucially, the dissertation provides evidence for the role of language input and output in second language acquisition, by examining adult and young speakers' production through extensively transcribed naturalistic speech. Results of the variationist analysis show that plural marking in Palenquero is variable. Both adult and young speakers mark plural references with the prenominal ma and zero (unmarked). The data also show that ma can be used in singular contexts by both speaker groups. However, young speakers (second language learners/ heritage language speakers) exhibit higher rates of singular ma than adults, indicating an overextension of this particle to singular contexts. The variationist analysis revealed that plural marking in this language is favored with specific noun referents in subject role, in accordance with cross-linguistic generalizations for plural marking and discourse referential nouns. However, significant differences were found between adult and young speakers. In contrast to adult speakers, young speakers use ma in subject role but with nonspecific references. Thus, young speakers seem to acquire discursive (-pragmatic) patterns (specificity) later in their acquisition process. The second dimension of this study presented an ethnographic/survey analysis that provides insight on the actual state of Palenquero language input to young people in the community and young speakers' contexts of use of the language. The Palenquero language is not frequently spoken by young people, whether at home, school, or other contexts in Palenque. Young speakers tend to use the language only in certain situations (when it is requested, in greetings, when making jokes, attending Palenquero workshops and or when avoiding others listening to their conversations) and occasionally with their teachers or friends from school. Currently, in the community of San Basilio de Palenque, there are some school efforts to revitalize the once-endangered language, Palenquero. However, the pedagogical practices and framework have fallen short of the original goals. Additionally, young speakers are attempting to learn the language with a very limited input and few opportunities to speak it. As a result, emerging grammatical innovations by young speakers do not converge (entirely) with fluent adult usages nor are they accepted by fluent adult speakers. This dissertation demonstrates the need to bring rigorous quantitative and qualitative tools and second language acquisition theories to bear on issues in Palequeros' grammars. Likewise, this study highlights the advantage of having community members participate in the scientific research of their own community as well as of using science at the service of the community.

It was the first work to systematically develop a theory first suggested by Coelho in the late nineteenth century: that the creation of creole languages somehow reflected universal properties of language. The book also proposed that the same set of properties would be found to emerge in normal first-language acquisition and must have emerged in the original evolution of language. These proposals, some of which were elaborated in an article in Behavioral and Brain Sciences (1984), were immediately controversial and gave rise to a great deal of subsequent research in creoles, much of it aimed at rebutting the theory. The book also served to legitimize and stimulate research in language evolution, a topic regarded as off-limits by linguists for over a century. The present edition contains a foreword by the author bringing the theory up to date; a fuller exposition of many of its aspects can be found in the author's most recent work, More than nature needs (Harvard University Press, 2014).
