This book was released on 2009 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade, great advances have been made in fundamental research and in the applications of bioluminescence and chemiluminescence. These techniques have become vital tools for laboratory analysis. Bioluminescence imaging has emerged as a powerful new optical imaging technique, offering real-time monitoring of spatial and temporal progression of biological processes in living animals. Bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) methodology has also emerged as a powerful technique for the study of protein-protein interactions. Luciferase reporter gene technology facilitates monitoring of gene expression and is used to probe molecular mechanisms in the regulation of gene expression. Chemiluminescence detection and analysis have also found diverse applications in life science research; for example, chemiluminescent labels and substrates are now widely used in immunoassay and nucleic acid probe-based assays. The latest advances in this exciting field, from fundamental research to cutting-edge applications, are explored in this most recent volume of the biannual symposium series, the Proceedings of the 15th International Symposium on Bioluminescence and Chemiluminescence. The volume highlights advances in fundamental knowledge of luciferase-based bioluminescence, photoprotein-based bioluminescence, fundamental aspects and applications of chemiluminescence, luminescence imaging, fluorescence quantum dots and other inorganic fluorescent materials, phosphorescence and ultraweak luminescence, and instrumentation for measurement and imaging of luminescence.

Book Synopsis Graphite, Graphene, and Their Polymer Nanocomposites by : Prithu Mukhopadhyay
Download or read book Graphite, Graphene, and Their Polymer Nanocomposites written by Prithu Mukhopadhyay and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graphite, Graphene, and Their Polymer Nanocomposites presents a compilation of emerging research trends in graphene-based polymer nanocomposites (GPNC). International researchers from several disciplines share their expertise about graphene, its properties, and the behavior of graphene-based composites. Possibly the first published monograph of its kind, this book provides a comprehensive snapshot of graphite, graphene, and their PNCs, including the underlying physics and chemistry, and associated applications. Beginning with an introduction to natural and synthetic graphite, the precursors to graphene, the text describes their properties, characterization techniques, and prominent commercial applications. The focus then moves to graphene and its unique features, and techniques for its characterization. The chapters cover advances in electrochemical exfoliation of graphite, as well as exfoliation routes to produce graphene and graphite nanoplatelets for polymer composites. They also explore commercial use of graphene-based materials, such as emerging clean energy and pulse laser applications, and use as nanofillers in epoxy-based composites. The authors provide an overview of nanofillers and address two methods for GPNC preparation as well as specialized properties of GPNC. With its multidisciplinary approach, this book provides a broader scientific and engineering perspective necessary for meaningful advancements to take place.

Book Synopsis Polymer Science and Engineering by : National Research Council
Download or read book Polymer Science and Engineering written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymers are used in everything from nylon stockings to commercial aircraft to artificial heart valves, and they have a key role in addressing international competitiveness and other national issues. Polymer Science and Engineering explores the universe of polymers, describing their properties and wide-ranging potential, and presents the state of the science, with a hard look at downward trends in research support. Leading experts offer findings, recommendations, and research directions. Lively vignettes provide snapshots of polymers in everyday applications. The volume includes an overview of the use of polymers in such fields as medicine and biotechnology, information and communication, housing and construction, energy and transportation, national defense, and environmental protection. The committee looks at the various classes of polymersâ€"plastics, fibers, composites, and other materials, as well as polymers used as membranes and coatingsâ€"and how their composition and specific methods of processing result in unparalleled usefulness. The reader can also learn the science behind the technology, including efforts to model polymer synthesis after nature's methods, and breakthroughs in characterizing polymer properties needed for twenty-first-century applications. This informative volume will be important to chemists, engineers, materials scientists, researchers, industrialists, and policymakers interested in the role of polymers, as well as to science and engineering educators and students.
Book Synopsis Mechanics of Materials and Structures by : George Voyiadjis
Download or read book Mechanics of Materials and Structures written by George Voyiadjis and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide range of topics in the area of mechanics of materials and structures are covered in this volume, ranging from analysis to design. There is no special emphasis on a specific area of research. The first section of the book deals with topics on the mechanics and damage of concrete. It also includes two papers on granular packing structure changes and cumulative damage in polymers. In the second part more theoretical topics in mechanics are discussed, such as shell theory and nonlinear elasticity. The following section dicusses areas dealing primarily with plasticity, viscoelasticity, and viscoplasticity. These include such topics as dynamic and cyclic plasticity. In the final section the subject is structural dynamics, including seismic analysis, composite frames and nonlinear analysis of bridges. The volume is compiled in honor of Professor Maciej P. Bieniek who has served as a teacher and researcher at several universities, and who has made many significant contributions in the evaluation, rehabilitation, and design of infrastructures.
