Book Synopsis Playing for Both Sides by : Stephanie Johnson
Download or read book Playing for Both Sides written by Stephanie Johnson and published by Bridget Williams Books. This book was released on 2016-08-12 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For novelist Stephanie Johnson, her relationship with Australia and Australians has been an ambivalent one. She has lived there for periods in her life, and her first book, a collection of short stories, was actually published in Australia. She was described then as a young Australian writer, something she says she agreed to ‘for reasons that are complex and some of them hardly honourable’. For Johnson the longing to return has waxed and waned. ‘Why don’t I live there?’ she often asks herself. Yet she is a sixth-generation New Zealander. In this BWB Text Johnson explores her elusive and ambivalent feelings about the sunburnt country – which includes a musician’s road trip there with her singer-songwriter son Skyscraper Stan – and in so doing casts fascinating light on some of the formative influences that have shaped the work of this award-winning New Zealand writer.

Download or read book Playing Both Sides of the Fence written by Richie Allen and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Could the Gospel that we commonly proclaim in the US be labeled, “Made in America?” Have “Americanisms” and cultural insertions unknowingly slipped into our message? Can the “Cultural Fence” encountered when we attempt to minister cross-culturally serve as a filter to help purify our Gospel presentation and return it to the powerful, supra-cultural Gospel of which the Apostle Paul was not ashamed? The answer to these and many other questions make Playing Both Sides of the Fence required reading for all who care to proclaim the Good News to the World.

Book excerpt: A witty and warm-hearted novel about a trans teen finding his place in the world perfect for fans of Red, White and Royal Blue There’s only one thing standing between Finch Kelly and a full-blown case of high school senioritis: the National Speech & Debate Tournament. Taking home the gold would not only be the pinnacle of Finch’s debating career, but the perfect way to launch himself into his next chapter: college in Washington, DC, and a history-making career as the first trans congressman. What could possibly go wrong? Well, for starters, Finch could develop a teeny tiny crush on his very attractive, very taken, and very gay debate partner, Jonah. Never mind that Finch has never considered whether he’s interested in more than just girls. And that dream of college in DC? Finch hasn’t exactly been accepted anywhere yet, let alone received the full-ride scholarship he’ll need to make this dream a reality. Worst of all, though, is this year’s topic for Nationals: transgender rights. If he wants to cinch the gold, and get into college, Finch might have to argue against his own humanity. People say there are two sides to every argument. But, as Finch is about to discover, some things—like who you are and who you love—are not up for debate.

Book Synopsis On Both Sides of the Tracks by : Morgane Cadieu
Download or read book On Both Sides of the Tracks written by Morgane Cadieu and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2024-01-05 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of social mobility in contemporary French literature that offers a new perspective on figures who move between social classes. Social climbers have often been the core characters of novels. Their position between traditional tiers in society makes them touchstones for any political and literary moment, including our own. Morgane Cadieu’s study looks at a certain kind of social climber in contemporary French literature whom she calls the parvenant. Taken from the French term parvenu, which refers to one who is newly arrived, a parvenant is a character who shuttles between social groups. A parvenant may become part of a new social class but devises literary ways to come back, constantly undoing any fixed idea of social affiliation. Focusing on recent French novels and autobiographies, On Both Sides of the Tracks speaks powerfully to issues of emancipation and class. Cadieu offers a fresh critical look at tales of social mobility in the work of Annie Ernaux, Kaoutar Harchi, Michel Houellebecq, Édouard Louis, and Marie NDiaye, among others, shedding fascinating light on upward mobility today as a formal, literary problem.

Book Synopsis Both Sides of the River by : Tim White
Download or read book Both Sides of the River written by Tim White and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both Sides of the River has something for everyone. It centers around one couple's struggle to raise their children in the way that they should go. It begins in the 1950s with his return from military duty and ends in 2006 at their 50th anniversary. In between there is laughter, history, tragedy, and a few rare triumphs. There's a little romance for those so inclined, but throughout there's the underlying message of unquestioned faith in the higher being. There's the gospel singing from the 60s and 70s and the value of a good bird dog. Everything from cooking syrup at the right temperature up to addressing stereotypes and other social indiscretions. But mostly, it's to honor some pretty amazing parents for being married for 50 years. Both Sides of the River bring to light some of the struggles and sacrifices endured not only them but also by every other family nationwide during those turbulent times.

Download or read book Both Sides Now written by Dhillon Khosla and published by Untreed Reads. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both Sides Now is a vivid and compelling account of how one man’s search for wholeness led him through multiple, complex, and life-threatening surgeries that transformed him not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well. Born with the body of a female, Dhillon Khosla knew very early on that his true identity was male, yet he spent nearly two decades repressing that knowledge and trying to embrace his female form. Shortly after turning twenty-eight, he came across an article about men born with female bodies who had undergone surgeries to reclaim their male identity. When he read their stories, Khosla felt flashes of recognition stirring within and—for the first time—hope. In this riveting memoir, Khosla discusses openly and honestly what it was like to live as a woman, and how that life shaped the man he is today. Through anecdotes, he shares unique and profound insights into the sexes. Ultimately, however, Both Sides Now is a story about what it means to truly love oneself, and the willingness to turn away from the dissenting voices that tell us who we ought to be…and toward that one, lone voice that has known all along.
