Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *Notable Social Studies Trade Books Selection for Young People 2018* “I was six years old the day we left the farm in Mississippi,” remembers Cassie in this richly textured picture book. “Between the boll weevils, the floods, and the landlord, there was no way a family could scratch out a living there anymore.” Packing themselves into an old jalopy—with Daddy, Uncle Vern, and Mama in the front seat and Cassie and her two brothers in the back—they joined the Great Migration from the impoverished Deep South to Chicago, where there was work to be had in the stockyards. Across the kids’ laps lay Daddy’s prized possession, a six-string guitar. Daddy worked hard to put food on the table, but what he really loved was playing the blues. This evocative tale of the African-American odyssey in search of a better life is also a homage to the uniquely American music that developed from African music and American spirituals, work songs, and folk ballads. In the book’s backmatter, Garland relates how he first heard and fell in love with blues music, beginning a lifelong fandom. Portraits and thumbnail biographies of great blues musicians and landmark songs complete this tribute to the great American music and the yearnings that produced it. Fountas & Pinnell Level S

Download or read book Blue Ridge Folklife written by Ted Olson and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010-02-11 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years immediately preceding the founding of the American nation the Blue Ridge region, which stretches through large sections of Virginia and North Carolina and parts of surrounding states along the Appalachian chain, was the American frontier. In colonial times, it was settled by hardy, independent people from several cultural backgrounds that did not fit with the English-dominated society. The landless, the restless, and the rootless followed Daniel Boone, the most famous of the settlers, and pushed the frontier westward. The settlers who did not migrate to new lands became geographically isolated and politically and economically marginalized. Yet they created fulfilling lives for themselves by forging effective and oftentimes sophisticated folklife traditions, many of which endure in the region today. In 1772 the Blue Ridge was the site of the Watauga Association, often cited as the first free and democratic non-native government on the American continent. In 1780 Blue Ridge pioneers helped win the Revolutionary War for the patriots by defeating Patrick Ferguson's army of British loyalists at the Battle of Kings Mountain. When gold was discovered in the southernmost section of the Blue Ridge, America experienced its first gold rush and the subsequent tragic displacement of the region's aboriginal people. Having been spared by the coincidence of geology and topography from the more environmentally damaging manifestations of industrialization, coal mining, and dam building, the Blue Ridge region still harbors scenic natural beauty as well as vestiges of the earliest cultures of southern Appalachia. As it describes the most characteristic and significant verbal, customary, and material traditions, this fascinating, fact-filled book traces the historical development of the region's distinct folklife.
Book Synopsis Lay Down Daddy Games by : Jim Manduca
Download or read book Lay Down Daddy Games written by Jim Manduca and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being a dad isn't easy - between work, spending time with the kids, the gym that you clearly always go to, and keeping your wife happy, a guy can barely find the time to have a little lie-down now and again. Never fear. The following pages present what I like to think of as one of the most revolutionary advancements in fathering technology: the floor. You walk on it, you put furniture on it, you pay to keep the pipes underneath it running... but have you ever gone swimming in it? Climbed it? Fished in it? Of course you haven't - and that's why you're missing out on a world of mutual enjoyment for you and your kids: one where they experience fun and games they've never seen... and daddy gets a precious few minutes of horizontal time. Use with caution; these may improve your life greatly. You're welcome.
Book Synopsis The Political Psyche by : Andrew Samuels
Download or read book The Political Psyche written by Andrew Samuels and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-21 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can depth psychology and politics offer each other? In The Political Psyche Andrew Samuels shows how the inner journey of analysis and psychotherapy and the passionate political convictions of the outer world are linked. He brings an acute psychological perspective to bear on public themes such as the market economy, environmentalism, nationalism, and anti-Semitism. But, true to his aim of setting in motion a two-way process between depth psychology and politics, he also lays bare the hidden politics of the father, the male body, and of men's issues generally. A special feature of the book is an international survey into what analysts and psychotherapists do when their patients/clients bring overtly political material into the clinical setting. The results, including what the respondents reveal about their own political attitudes, destabilize any preconceived notions about the political sensitivity of analysis and psychotherapy. This Classic Edition of the book includes a new introduction by Andrew Samuels.
Download or read book Daddy's Virgin written by Claire Adams and published by Ownit Publishing LLC. This book was released on with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I didn’t think the pain would ever stop. A lot of people, when they lose someone in the military, at least get some time to prepare as they see the soldiers walking up to deliver the speech. I didn’t get that. I didn’t get “Major Jake Middleton, we regret to inform you of the passing of your wife in defense of our great nation.” Instead, I had to be there when she died on foreign soil. I’ve put on a brave face for our son. He can’t even remember his mother, and it kills me inside everyday. Now, I’m out of the military and running a company. Pretty damn good at it, really. The only thing bothering me about it is my secretary, Kristen. She’s stubborn and sexy. I thought after my wife passed, I’d never want a woman again. Kristen has me questioning that. I don’t know. Maybe she’s my salvation, or maybe I’m a fool. But I can’t lie and say I don’t want her with every fiber of my being.
Book Synopsis The Spirit of Romance by : Michael W. Elliott
Download or read book The Spirit of Romance written by Michael W. Elliott and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spirit of Romance is a collection of fifteen unrelated short stories. They were written over a number of years and originated from a variety of sources of inspiration. The over riding inspiration for the stories came from my all encompassing belief in the resilience and strength of the human spirit and heart. The fact that I am a hopeless romantic also had a great deal to do with the creation of my characters and their situations. In each story I attempted to take ordinary people and place them in extraordinary situations. I hoped to illustrate the awesome magnificence of the human spirit and the mighty power of true love. How the spirit of love, whether it be the love a father has for his son or the bond between soulmates can survive even death. Within its pages you will find ghosts of both a congenial and malevolent nature. You will discover children being given magical gifts. You will find enchanted potions, magical spells and supernatural intervention. I chose the name of the book, based not only on one of the storys titles, but my strong belief in the spirit of romance.
