Book Synopsis Performative Plautus by : Rodrigo Tadeu Gonçalves
Download or read book Performative Plautus written by Rodrigo Tadeu Gonçalves and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a theoretical and philosophical framework for the analysis of Plautus within a performative and philosophical perspective on language and theatrical performance. The book offers an insightful understanding of Plautus’ texts as more than simple literary remains of “archaic” Latin literature, but as witnesses of a process of using language to perform an entire world through the recognition of the power of language itself as a creative and constitutive agent of theatrical codification and variation of its own rules and conventions. The analyses of several of Plautus’ plays are carried out through the lenses of Cassin’s proposal of an effet monde as a result of a performative sophistic view on language, as well as Florence Dupont’s unique stance on Roman Comedy as an example of non-Aristotelian theater, based on metatheater and convention-variation as special characteristics of a ludic theater which plays around with its own rules after putting them in the foreground. Barbara Cassin and Florence Dupont also contribute with a foreword and a preface.
Book Synopsis The Chemical Muse by : D. C.A. Hillman, Ph.D.
Download or read book The Chemical Muse written by D. C.A. Hillman, Ph.D. and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The last wild frontier of classical studies." ---The Times (UK) The Chemical Muse uncovers decades of misdirection and obfuscation to reveal the history of widespread drug use in Ancient Rome and Greece. In the city-states that gave birth to Western civilization, drugs were an everyday element of a free society. Often they were not just available, but vitally necessary for use in medicine, religious ceremonies, and war campaigns. Their proponents and users existed in all classes, from the common soldier to the emperor himself. Citing examples in myths, medicine, and literature, D. C. A. Hillman shows how drugs have influenced and inspired the artists, philosophers, and even politicians whose ideas have formed the basis for civilization as we know it. Many of these ancient texts may seem well-known, but Hillman shows how timid, prudish translations have left scholars and readers in the dark about the reality of drug use in the Classical world. Hillman's argument is not simply "pro-drug." Instead, he appeals for an intellectual honesty that acknowledges the use of drugs in ancient societies despite today's conflicting social mores. In the modern world, where academia and university life are often politically charged, The Chemical Muse offers a unique and long overdue perspective on the contentious topic of drug use and the freedom of thought.
Book Synopsis Zodiac Calendars in the Dead Sea Scrolls and Their Reception by : Helen R. Jacobus
Download or read book Zodiac Calendars in the Dead Sea Scrolls and Their Reception written by Helen R. Jacobus and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient mathematical basis of the Aramaic calendars in the Dead Sea Scrolls is analysed in this investigation. Helen R. Jacobus re-examines an Aramaic zodiac calendar with a thunder divination text (4Q318) and the calendar from the Aramaic Astronomical Book (4Q208 - 4Q209), all from Qumran. Jacobus demonstrates that 4Q318 is an ancestor of the Jewish calendar today and that it helps us to understand 4Q208 - 4Q209. She argues that these calendars were taught in antiquity as angelic knowledge described in 1 Enoch and the Book of Jubilees. The study also encompasses Babylonian, Hellenistic, Byzantine astronomy and astrology, and classical and Jewish writings. Finally, a medieval Hebrew zodiac calendar related to 4Q318 with an astrological text is published here for the first time.

Book Synopsis Colour in the Ancient Mediterranean World by : Liza Cleland
Download or read book Colour in the Ancient Mediterranean World written by Liza Cleland and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2004 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As historical scholarship increasingly attends not just to text, but to context, the consideration of colour - as an aspect of the material, artistic, literary, linguistic and conceptual cultures of antiquity - provides a valuable path of approach to our evidence. This evidence demands, and responds to, many different methodological approaches. The papers represented in this volume of proceedings, based on an international conference held at Edinburgh University in 2001, thus reveal a multiplicity of different ways of seeing, studying and defining colour in antiquity. They bring together researchers working on different cultures and periods, but also different areas of colour research: the technological and archaeological study of painting and dyeing; the manifestations and meanings of colour in visual art; and the inter-related fields of the semiosis and symbolism of colour in literature, and the colour terms and categorisation of ancient languages.

Book Synopsis Rhetoric and Contingency by : DS Mayfield
Download or read book Rhetoric and Contingency written by DS Mayfield and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 1115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human life is susceptible of changing suddenly, of shifting inadvertently, of appearing differently, of varying unpredictably, of being altered deliberately, of advancing fortuitously, of commencing or ending accidentally, of a certain malleability. In theory, any human being is potentially capacitated to conceive of—and convey—the chance, view, or fact that matters may be otherwise, or not at all; with respect to other lifeforms, this might be said animal’s distinctive characteristic. This state of play is both an everyday phenomenon, and an indispensable prerequisite for exceptional innovations in culture and science: contingency is the condition of possibility for any of the arts—be they dominantly concerned with thinking, crafting, or enacting. While their scope and method may differ, the (f)act of reckoning with—and taking advantage of—contingency renders rhetoricians and philosophers associates after all. In this regard, Aristotle and Blumenberg will be exemplary, hence provide the framework. Between these diachronic bridgeheads, close readings applying the nexus of rhetoric and contingency to a selection of (Early) Modern texts and authors are intercalated—among them La Celestina, Machiavelli, Shakespeare, Wilde, Fontane.

Book Synopsis Studies in Historical Ibero-Romance Morpho-Syntax by : Miriam Bouzouita
Download or read book Studies in Historical Ibero-Romance Morpho-Syntax written by Miriam Bouzouita and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-07-15 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume features fourteen papers by leading specialists on various aspects of historical morpho-syntax in the Ibero-Romance languages. In these papers, fine-grained analyses are developed to capture the richness of undiscussed or —often— previously unknown data. Comparative across the (Ibero-)Romance languages and diverse in terms of the approaches considered, ranging from cognitive-functionalist to generativist to variationist, they combine in this volume to showcase the merits of different, yet complementary, perspectives in understanding linguistic variation and language change. The gamut of phenomena scrutinised varies from morpho-phonological puzzles and word-formation to syntax and interface-related phenomena to, as a coda, methodological suggestions for future research in old Ibero-Romance; thus making it ideal reading for scholars and postgraduate students alike.
