Book Synopsis Plate Deformation from Cradle to Grave by : Andy Nowacki
Download or read book Plate Deformation from Cradle to Grave written by Andy Nowacki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-14 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Earth's rocky mantle convects to lose heat, which comes from the liquid iron core below. The mantle's interfaces - the core-mantle boundary, and the lithosphere - may hold the key to understanding mantle motion because of the seismic anisotropy present in these parts of the Earth. In this thesis, Andy Nowacki presents a precise but comprehensive review of the current state of the art in studying flow with anisotropy, mineral physics and geodynamics. New measurements of shear wave anisotropy in the lowermost mantle and at mid-ocean ridges are used to constrain mechanisms of creep and melt extraction in the mantle. A model of global flow is used to predict anisotropy in the deep Earth, and novel methods to forward model shear wave splitting are described. Future studies of mantle flow must incorporate the understanding gained in this thesis. The thesis contains a substantive introduction to the structure of the Earth, seismic anisotropy in general and in the core-mantle boundary region, and mid-ocean ridge processes. It also describes novel methods for forward modelling and interpreting shear wave splitting data. Three chapters present timely research into dynamics at divergent plate boundaries and at the core-mantle boundary.
Book Synopsis Wear Particles: From the Cradle to the Grave by : D. Dowson
Download or read book Wear Particles: From the Cradle to the Grave written by D. Dowson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1992-08-04 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Leeds-Lyon symposia have well established themselves in the tribological calendar. Industrial progress requires a better understanding of interfacial phenomena than now exists and it is exciting to see that the topics addressed in these proceedings volumes are at the forefront of progress in tribological research. These proceedings contain 61 papers written by authors from all over the world, covering the entire spectrum of wear particles. Of particular interest is the detailed consideration of a wide range of particle formations and detachments, as well as a close look at the physics and chemistry of the wear of mechanisms, together with other in-depth state-of-the-art analytical contributions.

The text equips students to interpret the wealth of data they will encounter as citizens, professionals, and consumers.
Book Synopsis New Trends in Eco-efficient and Recycled Concrete by : Jorge de Brito
Download or read book New Trends in Eco-efficient and Recycled Concrete written by Jorge de Brito and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-16 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Trends in Eco-efficient and Recycled Concrete describes different recycled materials that have been used in eco-efficient concrete, reviewing previous publications to identify the most effective recycled materials to be applied in concrete manufacture. New trends on eco-efficient concrete are presented, filling a gap in the market. Sections cover various recycled materials applied in concrete production, present the latest on the lifecycle analysis of recycled aggregate concrete, detail new trends in recycled aggregate concrete research, and finally, present updates on upscaling the use of recycled aggregate concrete and structural reliability. - Focuses on new trends in recycled aggregate concrete and its applications (rather than the more subjective 'sustainability' aspects) - Contains very important contributions from researchers in eco-efficient concrete, including Chi Sun Poon, Jorge de Brito, Valeria Corinaldesi, Francisco Agrela, etc. - Presents a 'one stop' reference for a graduate course on sustainable construction
Book Synopsis Energetic Materials by : Manoj K. Shukla
Download or read book Energetic Materials written by Manoj K. Shukla and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-09 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive account of energetic materials, including their synthesis, computational modeling, applications, associated degradation mechanisms, environmental consequences and fate and transport. This multi-author contributed volume describes how armed forces around the world are moving their attention from legacy explosive compounds, which are heat and shock sensitive (thus posing greater challenges in terms of handling and storage), to the insensitive munitions compounds/formulations such as insensitive munitions explosive (IMX) and the Picatinny Arsenal Explosive (PAX) series of compounds. The description of energetic materials focuses on explosives, pyrotechnic compositions, and propellants. The contributors go on to explain how modern generation energetic compounds must be insensitive to shock and heat but at the same time yield more energy upon explosion. Nanoinspired and/or co-crystallized energetic materials offer another route to generate next-generation energetic materials, and this authoritative book bridges a large gap in the literature by providing a comprehensive analysis of these compounds. Additionally, it includes a valuable overview of energetic materials, a detailed discussion of recent advances on future energetic compounds, nanotechnology in energetic materials, environmental contamination and toxicity, assessment of munitions lethality, the application quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) in design of energetics and the fate and transport of munition compounds in the environment.

Book Synopsis Manual on Experimental Methods for Mechanical Testing of Composites by : C. H. Jenkins
Download or read book Manual on Experimental Methods for Mechanical Testing of Composites written by C. H. Jenkins and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 1998 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few decades, there has been tremendous activity surrounding composite materials--a matrix material in which is embedded a reinforcement material. Modern, high-performance composites have revolutionized recent technology, as new composites are designed along with the structures they will become part of. These "engineered" materials are an ever increasing percentage of materials used in a variety of roles. This book focuses on experimental methods that improve the understanding of the mechanics of composite materials. Experiments are a critical means of material characterization and damage detection, and are always evolving. These papers present a window onto the world of experimental methods for mechanical testing of composites, for individuals who wish to fully encounter that world.
