Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fundamental equations for the plastic buckling of a rectangular plate under edge thrust are developed on the basis of a new set of stress-strain relations for the behavior of a metal in the plastic range. These relations are derived for buckling from a state of uniform compression. The fundamental equation for the buckling of a simply compressed plate together with typical boundary conditions is then developed and the results are applied to calculating the buckling loads of a thin strip, a simply supported plate, and a cruciform section. Comparisons with the theories of Timoshenko and Ilyushin are made. Finally, an energy method is given which can be used for finding approximate values of the critical load.

The authors of Handbook of Thin Plate Buckling and Post Buckling have already done the work for you. Detailed and clearly written, the book contains a comprehensive, up-to-date treatment of the buckling and postbuckling behavior of perfect and imperfect thin plates. The authors study, in detail and with specific solved examples, the essential factors that influence critical buckling loads, initial mode shapes, and postbuckling behavior for thin plates. Through their analysis of rectangular, circular, and annular plates, they present valuable information, some of which has never before been published in book form. Such topics include hygrothermal buckling, viscoelastic and plastic buckling, and buckling of various thickness plates. With this important collection, the Handbook of Thin Plate Buckling and Post Buckling provides you with a one-stop source of current research findings.

Book excerpt: From the point of view of mechanics, this monograph systematically demonstrates the theory of plastic bending and its engineering applications; most of the contents of the book are based on the authors' research in the past decade. The monograph not only expounds the contributions of the authors to the fundamental theory of plastic bending, but also presents various applications of the theory in sheet metal forming, particularly in the analysis and prediction of springback and wrinkling of strips and plates subjected to bending or stamping. In addition to theoretical modelling, attention has also been paid to the development of related numerical methods; comparisons with experimental results are also presented.

The proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Plasticity and its Current Applications brings together papers on all current areas of research into the plastic behaviour of solids. The main emphasis is on dynamic plasticity and study of deformation at crystal level but there are also papers on plasticity in particular materials such as superalloys and metal-matrix composites, the mechanics of damage, and the applications of plastic theory in metal-forming processes.

Book excerpt: The wing-body interference theory of NACA TN 2677 applied to symmetrical wings in combination with quasi-cylindrical bodies permits the direct calculation of pressure-distribution changes produced by body shape changes. This theory is used to determine the relative magnitued of the wave-drag reduction produced by changes in cylinder cross-sectional area and that produced changes in cross-sectional shape (without change in area). The body distortion is expressed as a Fourier series, and an integral equation is derived for the body shape for minimum drag for each Fourier component. Thus the wave-drag reductions for the various Fourier harmonics are independent and additive.
