Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, plantwide control structure design procedure of Wongsri (2012) is presented and applied to the monoisopropylamine process. The plant consists of a tubular reactor and three distillation columns. There are two recycle streams: gas and liquid. The raw materials are isopropyl alcohol and ammonia which are converted to MIPA, DIPA, and water. The by-product DIPA is recycled to react with ammonia to form MIPA. An excess of ammonia in the reactor inhibits the DIPA reaction, so ammonia is also recycled. The plant with control structure designed called the fixture plant. The raw materials entered the process is fixed and the products are regulated according to their accumulation. The recycle flowrate of DIPA is adjusted by its quantifier. The temperature loops are designed to reject the thermal disturbance. The first distillation column is controlled using a single temperature and a reflux-to-feed ratio control structure. The second distillation column is controlled using a single temperature and either a reflux-to-feed ratio or reflux ratio control structure. The third column has three alterative control structures which are the same as the second column and dual control structure ratio (one temperature and one composition).

Two new control structures obtained are evaluated and compared with the control structure of Skogestad (2008).The disturbances used in the evaluation are gas feed flowrate, feed temperature, and methane composition in feed changes. The new control structure, CS2, resulted in good dynamic performance for the feed flowrate and feed temperature changes. For methane composition in feed change, all control structures give comparable good performances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In general, the production process in all plants do not have single process or have only single unit operation separated from other process but they have several operation units. And due to the restriction of the environment, safety and operating condition, it is very necessary to have the control system to control the condition and compensate for any deviation occurred. The methyl amines process is a complex chemical process with reaction and separation sections connected by several recycle streams. There are three consecutive reversible reactions that produce three different chemical components. In this thesis, the plantwide control strategy is considered for the methyl amines process. Fixture point theorem is applied to the plantwide control structures design for selecting appropriated set of controlled variables. A commercial process simulation software achieves the dynamics simulation of this research, both of steady-state and dynamics conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A structure of most industrial processes, including many different unit operations, several recycle streams and energy integration, is a complex flowsheet. Therefore plantwide control structure design is an important way to control processes which become more complex so that processes are designed and operated closer to constraints. This research is design of plantwide control structures for butyl acetate process, which consist of a reactor, three distillation columns and two recycle streams. It can be produced by the reaction of methyl acetate with butanol in a reversible, liquid-phase, mildly exothermic reaction. Methanol is the second product. The objective of this research is selection of controlled variables so that finding which variables that should be controlled system for quickly responding to disturbances and adjusting self to steady state while minimizing the deviation of the product quality. Plantwide control procedure of Wongsri(2012) is chosen for design the new control structures in order to develop control loops to achieve the required objectives. Steady state designs were performed in commercial process simulator and evaluate the performance using integrated absolute error (IAE) of the designed control structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, process design and control system design are performed sequentially. It is only recently displayed that a simultaneous approach to the design and control leads to significant economic benefits and improved dynamic performance during plant operation. Extensive research in issues such as 'interactions of design and control', 'analysis and design of plant wide control systems', 'integrated methods for design and control' has resulted in impressive advances and significant new technologies that have enriched the variety of instruments available for the design engineer in her endeavour to design and operate new processes. The field of integrated process design and control has reached a maturity level that mingles the best from process knowledge and understanding and control theory on one side, with the best from numerical analysis and optimisation on the other. Direct implementation of integrated methods should soon become the mainstream design procedure. Within this context 'The Integration of Process Design and Control', bringing together the developments in a variety of topics related to the integrated design and control, will be a real asset for design engineers, practitioners and researchers. Although the individual chapters reach a depth of analysis close to the frontier of current research status, the structure of the book and the autonomous nature of the chapters make the book suitable for a newcomer in the area. The book comprises four distinct parts: Part A: Process characterization and controllability analysisPart B: Integrated process design and control ⊣ MethodsPart C: Plant wide interactions of design and controlPart D: Integrated process design and control ⊣ Extensions By the end of the book, the reader will have developed a commanding comprehension of the main aspects of integrated design and control, the ability to critically assess the key characteristics and elements related to the interactions between design and control and the capacity to implement the new technology in practice. * This book brings together the latest developments in a variety of topics related to integrated design and control.* It is a valuable asset for design engineers, practitioners and researchers.* The structure of the book and the nature of its chapters also make it suitable for a newcomer to the field.

Book excerpt: This book contains 182 papers presented at the 12th Symposium of Computer Aided Process Engineering (ESCAPE-12), held in The Hague, The Netherlands, May 26-29, 2002. The objective of ESCAPE-12 is to highlight advances made in the development and use of computing methodologies and information technology in the area of Computer Aided Process Engineering and Process Systems Engineering. The Symposium addressed six themes: (1) Integrated Product&Process Design; (2) Process Synthesis & Plant Design; (3) Process Dynamics & Control; (4) Manufacturing & Process Operations; (5) Computational Technologies; (6) Sustainable CAPE Education and Careers for Chemical Engineers. These themes cover the traditional core activities of CAPE, and also some wider conceptual perspectives, such as the increasing interplay between product and process design arising from the often complex internal structures of modern products; the integration of production chains creating the network structure of the process industry and optimization over life span dimensions, taking sustainability as the ultimate driver.
