Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this manual is to provide an opportunity for adult learning and contribute to farmer-based dissemination of information. The manual provides technical information that addresses forest tree species selection and propagation in cocoa fields, policy and legislation on timber trees on farm, and determination of compensation due to farmers for felled timber trees on cocoa farms. This information is then followed by guided decision-making exercises designed to reinforce cocoa farmers? observation skills, decision-making capacity and knowledge on timber tree species incorporated in cocoa growing systems in West Africa.
Book Synopsis Economics and Ecology of Diversification by : François Ruf
Download or read book Economics and Ecology of Diversification written by François Ruf and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-23 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monoculture systems that have been encouraged by governments since the 1960s have led to major socio-economic and environmental crises. Now the diversification of tree crop systems is advancing throughout the tropics. Why and when does diversification take place? What categories of farmers diversify? What obstacles do they have to overcome, and how do public and private policies interfere in this process? How do land use systems and landscapes evolve as a result of this diversification? According to the authors of this volume, diversification is certainly a response to market risks, but also to the depletion of environmental resources. Ecological changes such as declining soil fertility and increasing pressure from pests, diseases and weeds intensify at the end of monoculture cycles, driving crop change and diversification of farming systems. Through 15 case studies from Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Pacific, the authors provide us with in-depth insights into the economy and ecology of family agriculture and its recent developments.

Book Synopsis Agroforestry and Biodiversity Conservation in Tropical Landscapes by : Götz Schroth
Download or read book Agroforestry and Biodiversity Conservation in Tropical Landscapes written by Götz Schroth and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-03-22 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agroforestry -- the practice of integrating trees and other large woody perennials on farms and throughout the agricultural landscape -- is increasingly recognized as a useful and promising strategy that diversifies production for greater social, economic, and environmental benefits. Agroforestry and BiodiversityConservation in Tropical Landscapes brings together 46 scientists and practitioners from 13 countries with decades of field experience in tropical regions to explore how agroforestry practices can help promote biodiversity conservation in human-dominated landscapes, to synthesize the current state of knowledge in the field, and to identify areas where further research is needed. Agroforestry and Biodiversity Conservation in Tropical Landscapes is the first comprehensive synthesis of the role of agroforestry systems in conserving biodiversity in tropical landscapes, and contains in-depth review chapters of most agroforestry systems, with examples from many different countries. It is a valuable source of information for scientists, researchers, professors, and students in the fields of conservation biology, resource management, tropical ecology, rural development, agroforestry, and agroecology.
Book Synopsis Agroforestry as Climate Change Adaptation by : Mette Fog Olwig
Download or read book Agroforestry as Climate Change Adaptation written by Mette Fog Olwig and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-02-09 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides multidisciplinary perspectives on the potential of agroforestry to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change on cocoa production. Against the backdrop of increasingly precarious farmer livelihoods, it focuses on cocoa-agroforestry in Ghana – the second largest producer of cocoa in the world. Taking the reader on a journey across experimental plots and on-farm studies, the book delivers a holistic understanding of cocoa-agroforestry. Chapters examine historical yield and climate interactions, the effects of heat and drought on cocoa plants and the role of differing shade trees on soil fertility, yields, pests and diseases. The book discusses the socioeconomics of shade tree management, including cost-benefits, tree rights and competition for natural resources emphasizing policy implications and recommendations. Taking a multidisciplinary approach to climate-agriculture interactions, the book provides an innovative understanding of agroforestry and perennial cropping systems that goes beyond the Ghanaian cocoa belt. It is of relevance to students, researchers, farmers, practitioners and policymakers working with agroforestry and climate change adaptation. This is an open access book.

Book excerpt: In Brazil, two decades of high cocoa prices and low interest rates sparked significant growth in new planting of cocoa trees. Higher prices and low interest rates encouraged new planting; but higher prices discouraged replanting in the short term while encouraging it in the long term.

This book in 27 chapters draws strongly from practices, methods, examples and considerations for applying landscape approaches to achieve multifunctional outcomes and in particular, address the complex challenge of climate change. http://asb.cgiar.org/sites/default/files/count/click.php?id=2
Download or read book Cocoa Production written by R. A. Lass and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cocoa is produced almost exclusively by developing nations in the tropics. Although it is in many ways a suitable crop for small farmers, yields are seriously reduced by several major pests and diseases. This paper identifies the major constraints, summarizes the present state of knowledge, and suggests priorities for research that would be expected to have the greatest impact at the farm level. Financial constraints and thus lack of continuity in research have hindered progress. The botany, historical development, social aspects, and environmental requirements of cocoa are covered. The agronomy section deals with rehabilitating old cocoa, the role of cocoa in farming systems, and the general husbandry of the crop. This is followed by discussion of cocoa physiology, and the relation of shade and nutritional requirements. There are both economic and social constraints to the adoption of more sophisticated farming systems by small farmers. Research is required to improve current chemical and phytosanitary control measures. While breeding for resistance is the ideal long-term solution, there are many difficulties. Pest management in cocoa is generally inadequate.
