Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial hygienists and ventilation engineers know the name well: W.C.L. Hemeon. Since 1955, those professionals have frequently looked to Hemeon's Plant & Process Ventilation for essential information on industrial ventilation. Hemeon's longtime influence and inspiration has now prompted D. Jeff Burton-a prolific author on industrial ventilation himself-to produce a Fourth Edition of "the classic industrial ventilation text." While retaining Hemeon's distinctive writing style, conveying practical information in vivid phrasing, Burton has added extensive new information to recognize today's technology and techniques. Essential fundamentals of ventilation covered in the book include an explanation about the dynamic properties of airborne contaminants, and the principles of dispersion mechanism and local exhaust. Advanced applications are also examined in detail, particularly system design, dust control, and troubleshooting. Along with providing essential background on the two primary types of workplace ventilation-general and local exhaust-Hemeon's Plant & Process Ventilation also aims for mutual understanding between the health-oriented priorities of industrial hygienists, and the practical applications for maximum efficiency considered by ventilation engineers. Have a well-thumbed, dog-eared copy of Hemeon's Plant & Process Ventilation? Now is the best time to retire it in favor of this revised-and respectful-edition. Those who are new to Hemeon's approach will discover what other professionals have known more than 40 years: Hemeon offers some of the most effective ways to control environmental contaminates through proper ventilation techniques.

Book excerpt: Workplace is always important for a worker and finding it conducive for performance is considered a motivational factor. Grease plants by its nature of processing chemical work enabling environment could pose hazards to health and safety of workers. Maintaining normal atmospheric temperature in the grease plant is one major factor to consider in sustaining effective, efficient and responsible performance. Hazard-free ventilation management system in a grease plant carries a continuing challenge to workforce, production outputs and financial return impacts. Analysis of the problems of the grease plant ventilation maintenance system is the main purpose of this research. Using a combination of management analysis techniques such as problem tree analysis, solution tree analysis, logical framework analysis and focus group discussions coupled with statistical treatment using correlational tools facilitated the critical exposition of the ventilation maintenance system of the Company X Grease Plant in Manila. The research also aimed to contribute to better performance of the workforce, thus, beneficial to its stakeholders. The need to improve and redesign the ventilation maintenance system is fundamental. The redesign features resulted to: (a) proper handling of technical risks and harmful or toxic fumes or vapors; (b) Contaminants that got stocked within the hood and duct are efficiently captured, contained and removed thus, minimizing inhalation and adverse contact; (c) airflow into the hood and ductwork has been achieved due to the installation of an exhaust blower to the rooftop that disperses at an acceptably low concentration; and (d) the ventilation maintenance process got improved in view of the installation of fume hood for three blending kettles & lithium room. All these key features of the redesign model were found to be compliant to the standards of both the Industrial Hygienist Association of the Philippines, Incorporated (IHAPI) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the fascinating wealth of activities as they occur in the design, construction and commissioning of a chemical plant - a jigsaw puzzle of the work of chemical engineers, chemists, constructors, architects, electrical engineers, process automation engineers, economists and legal staff. The author first takes the reader through the conceptual phase, in which the economic relevance and environmental impact need to be considered and supplemented by accurate estimates of capital requirements and profitability. This phase ends with the choice of an appropriate engineering firm and the conclusion of the contract, after which the reader is guided through all aspects of the implementation phase from the engineering of the chemical plant to commissioning, equipment and material procurement, the erection phase and the successful test run, after which the new facility is handed over to its owner. The book also illustrates many potential sources of errors by means of examples from practice, and how, aside professional skills, teamwork and communication are also absolutely essential to keep such a complex project on track.
